Saltwater Paludarium One Year Review: Lessons from a Hybrid Aquarium Setup

After 12 months of maintaining a saltwater paludarium, the setup has revealed both unexpected successes and genuine challenges. This hybrid ecosystem, combining marine life with terrestrial plants, operates at the boundaries of conventional aquarium keeping. The lessons learned over this year span everything from structural foundations to the subtle interplay between fish behaviour and coral survival.
Foundation and Structure
The aquarium itself measures 8 feet in length, 22 inches deep, and 12 inches tall, constructed from ultra-clear glass. Rather than commissioning a custom stand, the setup uses reinforced IKEA kitchen cabinets, a cost-effective approach that has proven remarkably durable. The cabinets cost approximately €1,500 and were reinforced with wooden beams placed on the floor to distribute the weight of the filled tank, which exceeds 1,000 pounds. After one year, the cabinets show no signs of water damage or structural compromise, a testament to their kitchen-grade water resistance.
Flow Management and Canister Filter Integration

Initial flow management relied on an internal aircraft-base structure housing three return pumps and a power head, supplemented by small power heads at each end of the aquarium. While functional, this approach proved insufficient as macro algae growth created dead zones where waste accumulated. The surface skimmer required constant maintenance, and the heater placement was inefficient.
The addition of an external canister filter transformed the system. This powerful pump draws water through a lily pipe surface skimmer, eliminating the need for manual skimming and removing the heater from the aquarium entirely. The water passes through the heater within the canister before returning to the tank, creating far more efficient circulation. This upgrade has been one of the most impactful improvements to the setup.

Lighting Performance and Growth Results
The Illum Magic X4 lights by Dua have proven instrumental to the system’s success. The app-based control is intuitive, and the results speak clearly: macro algae, coral, and mangroves all exhibit vigorous growth. The lighting quality directly supports photosynthesis across all plant types in the system, making it a critical component of the ecosystem’s health.
Terrestrial Plants and Saltwater Integration
One of the initial concerns was whether terrestrial plants could survive in a saltwater environment. Early experience showed that plants placed too close to the water surface accumulated salt creep, which proved fatal. Plants positioned approximately 2 inches above the waterline remain unaffected.

Watering presents a unique challenge. Standard tap water would contaminate the marine ecosystem, so all terrestrial plants are watered with RO/DI water, the same purified water used to top off the aquarium during evaporation. This approach maintains ecosystem integrity while providing necessary hydration.
Mangroves initially showed stunted growth and leaf discoloration, indicating nutrient deficiency. Freshwater plant root tabs, small mineral supplements placed near the roots, resolved the issue and triggered robust growth. However, after approximately six months, growth slows again, requiring periodic re-application of root tabs.
Moss has proven the most challenging plant to maintain. The open environment causes rapid evaporation, and the heat from the lights above accelerates water loss further, causing the moss to dry out quickly.
Coral Challenges and Fish Behaviour
Despite stable water parameters, most corals in the system have not thrived. Gopora, Lobophyllia, Duncan coral, and anemones all declined over the year. The cause proved unexpected: the filefish and dwarf angelfish developed a taste for coral, actively consuming pieces from large polyp stony corals and anemones. Once they acquired this behaviour, they moved systematically from one coral species to the next, making it nearly impossible to protect individual specimens.
Rather than remove these visually striking fish, the decision was made to accept reduced coral populations and focus on macro algae instead. The filefish and dwarf angelfish blend beautifully with the macro algae, and future opportunities to keep corals alive will come from other aquariums currently in development.
Managing Plant Growth and Lighting Challenges

The mangroves have grown so vigorously that they now reach the lights above the aquarium. This creates two significant problems: the leaves themselves are beginning to burn from direct heat exposure, and the plants are blocking substantial light from reaching the aquarium below. The macro algae and corals now experience shadowed areas where growth is compromised.
This raises a critical question for the next phase of the project: should the mangroves be trimmed to maintain current lighting distribution, should the lighting setup be modified to buy additional time, or should the entire layout be redesigned to position the mangroves in the centre, allowing for bonsai-style shaping and bushy tree development?
Conclusion
One year into this saltwater paludarium project, the setup has demonstrated that hybrid marine and terrestrial ecosystems are viable, though they require careful attention to detail and willingness to adapt. The most impactful upgrades have been the canister filter for flow management and the Illum Magic X4 lighting for supporting photosynthesis across all plant types. The greatest lesson has been accepting that some goals, like maintaining a diverse coral collection, may need to yield to the realities of the ecosystem and the behaviour of its inhabitants.
