Quad Revela 1 Review: Ribbon Tweeter Refinement Below £2,000
A compact two-way speaker with a 60 mm pure ribbon tweeter, a new para-aramid-doped midwoofer cone and an even-handed, highly revealing character.
Introduction
The Quad Revela 1 is a compact two-way loudspeaker priced at £1,799 in the UK. It sits below the floorstanding Revela 2, which sells for £3,499, and it brings an unusual ingredient to this price bracket: a 60 mm pure ribbon tweeter.
Ribbon tweeters are valued for their very low moving mass, which lets them move quickly, extend further up the frequency range and keep distortion low. They are also harder to integrate than dome tweeters, because their dispersion is wide in the horizontal plane but narrower vertically, so the crossover has to hand over from the midwoofer to the tweeter smoothly. When that handover is imperfect, the tweeter becomes audible as a separate layer above the midrange.
Quad is not new to the format. The company’s first speaker, developed in 1949, was a corner ribbon design. The ribbon in the Revela 1 descends from the tweeter used in the Junior Z series, with a reworked magnet structure and waveguide intended to improve linearity and bandwidth while lowering distortion.
The stated aim is a character Quad has pursued for decades: even-handed, well balanced and revealing, in line with the brand’s long-standing description of its goal as the closest approach to the original sound.
Who the Quad Revela 1 Is For
This is a speaker for listeners who want information rather than warmth. It suits systems where the source and the amplification are already decent, and rooms where the speakers can be given some breathing space rather than pushed into corners.
It also performs well at low listening levels, which makes it a sensible choice for apartments, shared homes and late evening sessions, and it will still go as loud as most rooms need.

Buyers who mainly want a forgiving, richly coloured sound, or who play a lot of poorly recorded material, may find the Revela 1 more candid than they would like. Everything upstream is audible, and that cuts both ways.
Design and Driver Technology
The cabinet measures 395 x 246 x 312 mm and weighs approximately 11 kg, a manageable size for most rooms. Build quality is a clear strength, with a solid, well-finished enclosure that gives the speaker a purposeful feel.
The 165 mm (6.5 in) midwoofer cone is made from wood pulp doped with para-aramid materials, the fibre used in bulletproof vests, to add rigidity and damping. It was developed from scratch for the Revela project and carries the proprietary Reveal cone name. The driver also uses a die-cast chassis and a substantial magnet structure.
Above it sits the 60 mm (2.4 in) pure ribbon tweeter, with a revised magnet structure and waveguide. The crossover point is set at 2,900 Hz and follows close to a third-order acoustic Butterworth slope, with a small deliberate deviation in the first octave below the midwoofer to improve off-axis performance.
On the rear panel there is a single set of heavy-duty speaker binding posts, a cleaner arrangement than two pairs of lighter terminals, along with a rigid flared port designed to reduce turbulence in the airflow leaving the cabinet.
Two finishes are offered: pure black, or a version with the side and rear panels in high gloss walnut. The veneer does not wrap around to the front baffle, so the wood is visible mainly in profile.
Quad is owned by IAG, which also owns Wharfedale, Mission, Castle, Audiolab and Leak. Development is split between a team in Huntingdon, England and a team in Shenzhen, China. For the Revela project, the initial design and acoustic work was completed in the UK, with prototyping and production engineering carried out in China.
Main Strengths: Detail, Balance and Driver Integration
The most impressive aspect is how seamlessly the two drivers work together. There is no audible seam where the midwoofer hands over to the ribbon, an achievement that reflects both careful crossover design and the capability of the new cone driver.

Detail retrieval is exceptional across the frequency range. Bass is tight and agile with crisp transients, the midrange carries just enough body to sound natural without becoming coloured, and notes decay realistically rather than being cut short.
The tone is even-handed and the top end is open, so good recordings are handled with refinement rather than glare. Soundstaging and imaging are strong for the class, and the speaker is easy to place in a room with a generous sweet spot, which points to smooth off-axis behaviour.
Things to Consider Before Buying
The Revela 1 is a revealing speaker, and that is the main caveat. Partnering electronics need to be up to the job, and poor recordings will sound poor rather than being smoothed over.
Midrange presence is slightly forward. Vocals and lead instruments sit a little closer to the listener, which can initially read as extra detail. It is a deliberate character rather than a strictly neutral one.
Bass behaviour favours agility and definition over sheer mass. The low end is clean and quick, so listeners who prioritise weight and warmth may prefer a different balance, while those who value timing and texture will find plenty to like.
Positioning also matters. Getting the best from these speakers means having the flexibility to move them away from walls and to adjust the distance between them and the toe angle. A tightly constrained placement will not show them at their best.
Partnering Equipment and Room Setup
Because the speaker resolves so much, the character of the amplifier is clearly audible, so it is worth choosing a partner deliberately. The Revela 1 has been driven successfully by a 45 W per channel KT88 valve amplifier running in ultralinear mode, where bass control remained solid despite the low damping factor typical of valve designs.

A valve integrated amplifier brought fluidity and sweetness to the midrange, while a solid-state integrated delivered tighter detail control and a wider soundstage. A valve preamplifier and monoblock pairing showed that the speakers can scale up well beyond their price point.
The message is not that expensive electronics are required, only that quality is. Good recordings and competent amplification are enough to hear what the speaker can do, and the rewards are immediate. Low volume listening is particularly convincing, and the speaker will go as loud as most listeners will ever need.
Buying Advice
For anyone assembling a system under £2,000, the Revela 1 is a strong candidate and one of the most complete performers available at that level. It is the sort of speaker that can serve as a long-term destination rather than a stepping stone.

If a floorstanding cabinet suits the room better, the Revela 2 is the next step in the range at £3,499. Speakers costing several times as much still offer greater refinement, instrument separation and dynamic impact, which is expected at those prices. The achievement here is how much of that character is retained for far less money.
As always, auditioning with your own amplifier is worthwhile, because the speaker will make the most of whatever it is paired with. Buyers with neutral, well-sorted electronics and a reasonable choice of speaker position will get the most from it.
Conclusion
The Quad Revela 1 delivers a combination that is genuinely difficult to find below £2,000: exceptional detail, a natural and uncoloured midrange, tight and agile bass, and a midrange-to-treble handover that sounds like a single driver rather than two. Add easy placement and a generous sweet spot, and it becomes an unusually easy speaker to live with.
It asks for decent partnering equipment and a little care with positioning, and it will not flatter poor recordings. In return, it offers an even-handed, revealing presentation that stays true to the character Quad has built its reputation on. For listeners who want to hear what their system is really doing, this is one of the most convincing options in its class.
