Milwaukee HEXON Toughshell Heated Jacket Review: Longer Run Time, Smarter Heat

Milwaukee's HEXON heated gear brings longer run time, more consistent warmth, USB-C charging, and Bluetooth battery notifications to the Toughshell work jacket.

Introduction

Milwaukee’s HEXON heated gear is a meaningful step forward in heated workwear, and the Toughshell jacket is the clearest example of what has changed. It heats up fast, holds warmth more consistently as the battery drains, and runs noticeably longer than earlier generations. The included battery can also charge your phone over USB-C, and with the optional compact battery pack you get Bluetooth notifications when the charge runs low.

This review covers how the jacket performs in real cold-weather use, what the HEXON technology actually changes, and a few fit and design trade-offs to know about before buying.

Who This Product Is For

This is a work jacket first and foremost. The outer shell is tough and it is designed for working in cold conditions, not for quiet activities. Anyone who spends cold mornings outdoors, in a truck, or on a job site will get the most out of it. It is not ideal for hunting, where fabric noise matters, but for general outdoor work it is built for exactly that role.

Heat Performance and Run Time

The headline change is sustained warmth. HEXON gear is designed to keep you warmer in cooler weather and to stay warm even as battery voltage drops toward the point where the battery shuts itself off. In practice, the jacket heats fully within about two minutes and can keep you comfortable in 30-degree weather, holding that warmth rather than fading gradually.

Run time has improved dramatically. With the included 3.0Ah battery, the jacket stays warm for roughly three hours on high, where previous versions managed closer to an hour. There is also smart temperature regulation at work: if your body is already warm, the jacket senses it and does not need to work as hard, which stretches the charge further. The heated zones themselves consist of two panels across the back and additional zones at the sides, and they have not increased in size compared to prior generations. The jacket remains washable, which matters for something you will wear daily.

Build Quality and Materials

The Toughshell exterior is 90% polyester and 10% spandex, with a 100% polyester interior and no cotton anywhere. The HEXON heating technology is identifiable by the small hexagonal pattern in the fabric, so you can tell at a glance you are looking at HEXON gear. Hardware choices feel deliberate too: the zippers are YKK, and the front chest pockets have a raised power button. Push and hold to turn the heat on, then tap to cycle through the heat levels.

The jacket has been used in conditions that swing between 30-degree mornings and 60-degree afternoons, and it layers well. A little heat gets you going early in the day, and by afternoon you are down to a t-shirt. At times in 30-degree weather the heat can actually feel like a bit much on high.

The M12 TOUFF Battery

Every Toughshell and other HEXON jacket includes the new M12 TOUFF battery. It connects with a two-prong system that enables more communication between the jacket and the battery, and it fits snugly so it will not fall out during work.

The USB-C capability is the standout. You can charge the battery via USB-C, or use the battery to charge your phone, which makes it easy to top up in the truck before a cold morning. There is a fuel gauge on the battery so you can check charge at a glance.

One design change to note: the battery no longer sits in the front pocket where you could move it forward. It is back in the rear position. Milwaukee does offer an accessory that improves on this, and the smaller Bluetooth-enabled battery pack is worth a look if you want phone notifications about low battery and the flexibility of a lighter pack.

Things to Consider Before Buying

Fit is the biggest thing to check. In the past, many buyers sized up because of arm length; that is no longer necessary since the sleeves are now long across Milwaukee’s heated jackets. However, the sizing in general feels slightly roomier than before. Since heated gear is meant to be worn close to the body, ideally over a t-shirt rather than a sweatshirt, some wearers may find themselves floating in their usual size. It still works well, but try your normal size carefully.

Also consider whether you will miss front battery placement, and whether the optional compact Bluetooth battery pack fits how you work. The jacket itself is not quiet when moving around, which rules out some uses but is simply the nature of a tough outer-shell work jacket.

Buying Advice

If you work in cold conditions and want heat that comes on fast, stays consistent until the battery dies, and lasts about three hours on high, this generation of HEXON gear is a clear upgrade over what came before. Add the compact Bluetooth battery pack if phone notifications and flexible charging appeal to you. Size carefully, expect a work-tough rather than quiet shell, and you should be well served.

Conclusion

Milwaukee’s HEXON Toughshell jacket delivers longer run time, more consistent heat, USB-C charging in both directions, and thoughtful details like YKK zippers and a proper fuel gauge. The roomier fit and rear battery placement are worth checking before ordering, but as an overall technology upgrade for cold-weather work, it is a strong one.
