Haven Ridge Light Review: A 3.3-Ounce USB String Light for Camp and Van Life

A packable USB string light that doubles as a lantern, with touch dimming, sliding carabiners, and a very low weight.

Introduction

Some camp lights are built around a battery, a hook, and a fixed beam. The Haven Ridge Light takes a different route. It is a 78-inch strip of LEDs wrapped in a silicone sleeve, powered over USB, and designed to be strung almost anywhere. It weighs around 3.3 ounces, draws up to 6 watts on its highest setting, and sells for roughly $24.

The switch is a capacitive touch button, so it responds to a light touch rather than a physical press. Push and hold and the light dims. Push and hold again and it brightens. There is no remote and no app, just a strip that goes where you need it.

That mix of length, low weight, and simple controls is what makes the Ridge Light interesting. It comes from the same company behind the Haven hammock, and across roughly six months of use it has been strung inside tents and hammocks, mounted in a van, and carried across the country.

Who the Haven Ridge Light Is For

The Ridge Light suits anyone who already carries a USB power bank and wants light without adding yet another dedicated battery to the bag. Hammock campers can run it along the ridgeline. Tent campers can drape it overhead for an even glow instead of a single hotspot. Van and overland travelers can use it as a low-draw cabin light, and off-grid cabin owners can leave it strung up as everyday lighting.

Backpackers who count grams are a particularly good match. The light itself is around 3.3 ounces, and the storage bag adds only about 8 grams.

Main Strengths: Durability and Weather Realities

The LED strip sits inside a silicone protective sleeve. That sleeve does two jobs at once. It protects the strip from knocks and abrasion, and it wipes clean easily once the light picks up dirt.

Durability has held up under genuinely rough treatment, including rain, fog, dirt, and mud. The silicone cover has not torn, the strip has not failed, and the light has kept working through repeated exposure to wet conditions. It has not been handled gently, and it has not complained.

One point deserves care here. The company does not publish a water-resistance rating for the Ridge Light and would likely advise keeping it away from water. Field experience has been better than that guidance suggests, but the sensible approach is to treat the light as tolerant of splashes and rain rather than safe to submerge.

Light Output, Dimming, and Heat

No lumen figure is published, and the number of LEDs is not stated either, though the individual emitters sit roughly an inch apart along the full 78 inches. What matters in practice is that the output is generous for its size. It is plenty to light a camp, a tent interior, or a vehicle cabin on the highest setting.

Dimming is handled entirely through the touch button. Holding it steps brightness down, and holding it again brings brightness back up, so you can drop the output to a faint glow for reading or conversation without fumbling for a dial.

Heat is minimal even at full brightness. The strip does not noticeably warm a tent or a vehicle cabin, which matters if you leave it running for hours at a time.

Setup, Mounting, and Lantern Mode

Deployment takes seconds. A carabiner sits at each end of the strip along with a loop, and both carabiners slide freely so you can reposition them anywhere along the length. That makes it easy to clip the light to a hammock, a tent loop, a tarp edge, or a vehicle grab handle. Silicone zip-tie style fasteners are included for tying the strip to trees or fabric where a carabiner will not work.

The storage bag is more than packaging. Slide the strip inside, leave the switch and the USB plug outside, cinch the bag closed, and the whole thing becomes a soft lantern. It still dims and brightens from the same touch button, so the light works as a hangable area light or, in a pinch, as something you can carry while moving around camp.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The Ridge Light does not include a power source. It runs from any USB power bank, which is part of why it stays so light, but it does mean you need to bring one. A compact 10,000 mAh pack weighs only a few ounces, and the two together still make a very light lighting kit.

Because no lumen rating and no water-resistance rating are published, buyers who need certified numbers for extreme conditions will not find them here. The light is also not designed to be submerged, so it is not a replacement for a sealed, submersible camp lantern.

Beyond those practical notes, extended use has not turned up real drawbacks. The strip has held up through wet and muddy conditions, the controls stay responsive, and nothing about the design becomes irritating over time.

Buying Advice

At around $24, the Ridge Light is priced well below what its versatility suggests. It makes sense if you want a light that adapts to a hammock, a tent, a van, or a cabin without carrying a bulky lantern, and it makes sense to buy a second one if you split time between two setups, such as backpacking and vehicle travel.

Pair it with a small USB power bank and you have a complete lighting setup that weighs very little and covers far more situations than a single fixed lantern. Keep it out of standing water, let the silicone sleeve do its job, and the light should keep earning its place in the kit for a long time.

Conclusion

The Haven Ridge Light does one simple thing well. It puts a long, dimmable, lightweight strip of light wherever you need it. It is durable, quick to deploy, cool running, and inexpensive, and after months of use across tents, hammocks, and vehicles it has earned a permanent spot in the bag.
