BestArc BTC500DP Pro Review: A Budget 50-Amp Plasma Cutter That Surprised Us
We tested the BestArc BTC500DP Pro on steel, aluminum, stainless, and expanded metal. Here is our honest take on this compact, app-connected plasma cutter.
Introduction
A plasma cutter that costs less than $300 and can be controlled from your phone sounds almost too good to be true. The BestArc BTC500DP Pro is a budget-friendly 50-amp plasma cutter that is dual voltage, so it can run on 120 or 240 volts. It also comes with an app that lets you adjust settings wirelessly. We put it through a full battery of tests on different thicknesses of steel, plus aluminum, stainless steel, and expanded metal, to see if it can really hold up.
Who This Plasma Cutter Is For
This machine is aimed at hobbyists, fabricators, and DIYers who want a portable, affordable plasma cutter for occasional shop work. Its compact and lightweight design makes it easy to move around, and the included dust cover and accessories add value at this price point. If you mostly work with 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch steel and want the flexibility to cut thicker material occasionally, this cutter is worth a close look.
Cut Performance on Steel
The most important test for any plasma cutter is how well it cuts steel. We started with a quick cut on quarter-inch-thick steel. After a first pass that was interrupted by a clamp and a vice, a second dry run produced a much cleaner result. The cut quality was nice, with very little dross, and the machine was clearly capable.
Next, we moved up to half-inch-thick steel, the thickest material available for testing. Traveling more slowly and watching the sparks to maintain a steady speed, the cutter ate its way through the material without issue. The cut looked pretty clean, with some dross underneath that came off easily with pliers. After removing that, it was definitely a usable cut. For a machine well under $300 that is this compact and portable, that level of performance is genuinely impressive.

We also tested 1/8-inch steel, which is a bread-and-butter thickness for many projects. The cutter moved along at a reasonable clip and produced a nice cut. A 2-foot-long continuous cut confirmed there were no duty cycle issues in a practical setting, and the cut quality remained clean with very little dross.
Design, Build, and Controls
The BestArc BTC500DP Pro arrives plastic-wrapped with all the accessories you need, including a dust cover, work clamp and lead, dual voltage adapter, and extra consumables. The work clamp and lead feel like good quality for the money, and the torch is also well-made for the price. The torch connects with just three connections: the main lead, the pilot arc return, and the trigger, and they only fit in one spot. The work clamp uses a standard DINs connector.
On the back, there is a regulator for easily adjusting air pressure right on the machine, plus a filter and water separator. The power cord is around 5 feet long, which felt short, and the air fitting is a standard industrial style.
The front panel features a large, easy-to-read LCD screen. Adjusting air pressure on the left and amperage on the right is straightforward. There are modes for plate cutting, mesh cutting, and rust removal, plus a 2T and 4T mode so you do not have to hold the trigger down. There are also adjustments for post flow time and pilot arc time, though the default settings worked fine in our testing.

One thing we checked was the actual amperage output. The machine is claimed to have a 50-amp output, but a clamp meter recorded a maximum of just over 40 amps. That falls a little short of the rated amperage, but the real-world cut performance matters more, and it handled half-inch steel cleanly.
Aluminum and Stainless Steel
Beyond mild steel, we tested the cutter on other materials. On 1/4-inch-thick aluminum flat bar, it cut through pretty well, and the cut quality at the end was not bad for an aluminum plasma cut. On 1/8-inch-thick stainless steel, the cut came out really clean. Both tests showed the machine can handle non-ferrous and alloy materials without significant issues.
Expanded Metal and Rust Removal Modes
The mesh cutting mode is a standout feature. Cutting expanded metal with a cutoff wheel is a pain, but this mode keeps the pilot arc lit and lets you slice right through the mesh with a really nice cut. Using the standoff gives a bit more surface area for the torch to drag along, which helps.

The rust removal mode is something we had never seen before. It worked well in a line, and you can move fairly fast while rastering across a surface. It seemed to work effectively without needing to stay over one spot for very long, which is a useful extra capability for cleaning up metal before welding or painting.
Smartphone App Control
The companion app is a new addition, and it lets you control the machine from your phone. When first downloaded, the app was in Chinese, but there is a setting to change it to English. Getting there required creating an account and navigating a few button clicks in Chinese, which we worked through using a translation tool. The manufacturer has indicated this will be fixed soon, with the app defaulting to English for US users.
Once set up, connecting to the machine was very easy. Each setting has a slider that updates immediately on the machine’s panel. The connection is bidirectional, so changing parameters on the machine also updates the app interface. While we are old-school and prefer the knob and buttons on the machine, the app is useful if you want a description of the parameter you are changing or if the machine is tucked away in a corner and hard to reach.

Running on 120 Volts
We also tested the cutter on a standard 120-volt circuit. The machine is rated to need a 40-amp outlet, which is not typical, so we measured the actual amperage draw. On 1/8-inch steel, the cut was not quite as clean with reduced amperage, but still pretty good. On 1/4-inch steel, it cut well, though slower, with a fairly clean cut and minimal dross.
The amperage draw on 120 volts is significant. Even turned down to 20 amps output, the input draw was still high. At 15 amps, it was a little better but still on the high end. Running it for a short period, we were able to make a few cuts on a 20-amp circuit, but it is a heavy load on the electrical system. This is something to be aware of if you plan to run it on 120-volt power.
Buying Advice
The BestArc BTC500DP Pro passed all of its cut tests with flying colors, and for a machine coming in well under $300, that is honestly impressive. The built-in regulator, easy-to-read LCD panel, and simple menu navigation are all positives. The accessories are well-made for the price point, and consumables are easy to order.
There are a few trade-offs to consider. The amperage output measured a bit low, though it did not matter in practice since it cut cleanly through half-inch steel. The power cord is short, but that is a reasonable trade-off for the price. The amperage draw on 120 volts is high, which could be a concern depending on your electrical setup. The app was cumbersome to get started due to the language issue, but that is being addressed.
