How We Tested Solar Battery Chargers

Its float charge cut-in at 13.3 volts and cutout at 14.1 volts are better balanced than the Flex Solar’s. It also survived the impact test without damage and its rubberized coating earned a perfect scratch resistance score.

At around $50, the Grestle offers strong performance at a reasonable price. It can charge a battery below 1 volt, which gives it an edge over the Flex Solar for deeply discharged batteries.

The NX produced the highest average solar output in overcast conditions at 10.58 watts, and it finished second in hot sunny conditions at 16.77 watts. The downsides are durability and safety. The NX scratched with the relatively soft number three pick, and it took a significant dent in the impact test, though the panel still worked. The NXQ WLL 20W is the best choice for maximum solar output per dollar, provided you can live with its durability and reverse polarity concerns.
