Best Jump Starters 2026: Six Units Tested for Real-World Performance
We tested six jump starters across four, six, and eight cylinder tasks plus a diesel-level load and freezing temperatures. Here is how they compare.
Introduction
Jump starters have become a crowded category, with brands advertising increasingly dramatic amp ratings. Some units in this test claim as much as 8,250 amps from a compact lithium pack. But real-world performance rarely matches those numbers. To find out what actually matters, we ran six units through a series of demanding tests: four-cylinder, six-cylinder, eight-cylinder, and diesel-level cranking loads, followed by an overnight freeze test at 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
The lineup spans a wide price range, from an $80 budget unit to a $175 model that has performed well in previous testing. There is also a first-of-its-kind jump starter using sodium ion battery cells, which promises better cold weather behavior and a longer shelf life. And one unit includes a self-warming function designed to improve performance after being stored in freezing temperatures.
How We Tested
Each jump starter was connected to a custom testing robot that requests specific cranking loads and measures the amps, watts, and voltage each unit can deliver. We recorded peak output, average output, and total energy sent before the unit shut down. This gives a clear picture of both raw power and how long a unit can sustain that power during repeated cranking cycles.
We also tested each unit after an overnight freeze at 0 degrees Fahrenheit, measuring how much performance dropped compared to room temperature results. This simulates the experience of leaving a jump starter in a cold car overnight.

NOCO 1000
The NOCO 1000 is a $100 baseline unit that we have used in previous testing. It is compact and straightforward, with a 1,000 amp advertised rating. In our four-cylinder test, it delivered around 1,200 watts peak, which is respectable for the price. However, it was outperformed by the cheaper 8250 model in both peak power and cranking speed.
In the six-cylinder test, the NOCO 1000 again fell behind the 8250, which hit about 2,700 watts. The NOCO managed around 2,200 watts in the eight-cylinder test before we removed it from the charts. It is a solid, dependable unit, but it does not offer the best value in this group.
Afree 2000
The Afree 2000 is the first sodium ion battery jump starter we have tested. It costs $90 and is advertised at 2,000 amps. Sodium ion cells offer several theoretical advantages over lithium ion: they are less prone to thermal runaway, have a longer shelf life, and perform better in cold temperatures. The trade-off is that they are heavier and larger for the same output.
In our four-cylinder test, the Afree settled in around 1,700 watts, splitting the difference between the 8250 and the NOCO 1000. It delivered 5 watt hours of total energy, more than double the 8250. In the six-cylinder test, it hit about 2,300 watts, but its thin 10 gauge cables got hot to the touch, causing voltage drop and reduced cranking speed.

The Afree really impressed in the cold test. After an overnight freeze, it saw only a 28% reduction in peak watts, a 29% reduction in voltage, and just a 17% drop in total energy sent. That is the best cold weather performance we have seen from a non-capacitor jump box. The main weakness is the undersized cables, which overheat quickly under high demand. Swapping to larger 8 gauge cables would be a cheap and effective upgrade.
Gulu GT4000
The Gulu GT4000 costs $120 and is advertised at 4,000 amps. Its standout feature is a self-warming function: when it senses the temperature is too cold for optimal performance, it can heat itself up before use. It also has heavier clamps with a fair amount of copper, 6 gauge cables, and fast charging at 100 watts. The display even shows the charging wattage, which is not standard.
In our four-cylinder test, the Gulu mirrored the Wolf Box closely, with the Wolf Box edging ahead by a small margin. In the six-cylinder test, both units hit around 1,900 to 2,000 watts with stable voltage. The Gulu delivered 10 watt hours of total energy in the first test and 10.5 in the six-cylinder test, while the Wolf Box managed 13 and 18.5 respectively.

The Gulu’s boost mode allows it to jump start a completely dead battery showing no voltage. However, in our diesel-level test, the relay inside the unit failed after about a quarter of a second, peaking at 592 watts and 602 amps before dying completely. The unit could still be charged, but it would no longer function as a jump starter. We purchased a second unit to test the warming function, which worked, though it required multiple presses to activate. After warming, the Gulu performed better than any other lithium ion unit out of the freezer, with 0% reduction in peak watts and just 6% down in voltage.
Loki Thor 3000
The Loki Thor 3000 costs $170 and is advertised at 3,000 amps. It has the nicest cables of any unit in this test, with all-copper clamps and 6 gauge wires. It charges at 100 watts and includes multiple charging cables. The connector is the largest we have seen, and the unit feels substantial.
The Loki Thor wants to see some voltage from the battery to work its best, and it clicks on and off during cranking to check for that. In our six-cylinder test, it peaked at 3,290 watts, the most of any unit to date, and delivered 32 watt hours of total energy, the most we have ever recorded from a jump starter in a single test. In the eight-cylinder test, it peaked at 4,900 watts, again the most to date.
In the diesel-level test, the Loki Thor peaked at just over 7,000 watts and a clean 700 amps. That is about four times the power available from a standard 120 volt outlet. Its low voltage protection stepped in after a short burst, but it is likely enough to get large engines moving. In the cold test, it saw a 43% reduction in peak watts and a 98% drop in total energy, which is on par for a lithium ion unit without special cold weather features.
NOCO 1750
The NOCO 1750 costs $175 and has been our top-ranked unit in previous testing. It is similar in price to the Loki Thor, and both are rated at 4,000 amps. In our six-cylinder test, the NOCO 1750 was solid but did not dominate, with the Loki Thor pulling ahead. In the eight-cylinder test, the NOCO 1750 again performed well but was not the standout.
The NOCO 1750 remains a dependable choice, and its cold weather performance is comparable to the Loki Thor. It is a well-built unit with a strong reputation, but in this group, the Loki Thor offers more raw performance for a similar price.
Wolf Box
The Wolf Box costs around $115 and is advertised at 4,000 amps. It performed very similarly to the Gulu GT4000 throughout our testing, with the Wolf Box consistently edging ahead by a small margin. In the four-cylinder test, it delivered 13 watt hours of total energy versus the Gulu’s 10. In the six-cylinder test, it managed 18.5 watt hours versus 10.5.
The Wolf Box also handled the boost mode well, jump starting a completely dead battery without issue. In the diesel-level test, it had no problem, unlike the Gulu. The Wolf Box earned points for its overall insensitivity to how it is used, making it a reliable choice for a wide range of situations.
Cold Weather Performance
Cold weather is one of the biggest challenges for jump starters. Lithium ion cells lose significant performance when frozen, which is why we test each unit after an overnight freeze at 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
The 8250 model performed poorly in the cold, with an 87% reduction in peak watts, a 22% drop in voltage, and a 98% reduction in total energy sent. The sodium ion Afree 2000 was the opposite, with just a 28% reduction in peak watts and a 17% drop in total energy. The Gulu GT4000, with its self-warming function, saw 0% reduction in peak watts and just 6% down in voltage after warming. The Loki Thor saw a 43% reduction in peak watts and a 98% drop in total energy, which is typical for a lithium ion unit.

Overall Buying Advice
If you want the best raw performance, the Loki Thor 3000 is the clear winner. It finished first or near first in every category until the freeze test, and even then it performed about as well as the NOCO 1750. At $170, it offers exceptional value for the power it delivers.
If you prioritize cold weather performance, the Afree 2000 is worth a close look. Its sodium ion cells handle freezing temperatures far better than any lithium ion unit we have tested, and at $90 it is a reasonable entry price. The main weakness is the thin cables, which could be upgraded cheaply.
The Wolf Box is a solid all-rounder at around $115, with performance very close to the more expensive Gulu GT4000. The Gulu’s self-warming function is a useful feature, but its relay failure under high demand is a concern.
The NOCO 1000 and NOCO 1750 remain dependable choices, but in this group they are outperformed by cheaper or similarly priced alternatives.
Conclusion
The jump starter market is full of inflated amp claims, but real-world testing reveals which units actually deliver. The Loki Thor 3000 is the standout performer, while the Afree 2000 shows the promise of sodium ion technology, especially in cold weather. For most buyers, the Wolf Box offers the best balance of price and reliability. Whichever you choose, pay attention to the quality of the cables and clamps, as those are often a better indicator of real performance than the advertised amp rating.
