A Kyushu-limited DelGuard anniversary model with a gold sparkle finish, solid grip, and a lead-protection system that only kicks in when you really press hard.

Introduction

The Zebra DelGuard Type LX Gold is a limited-edition mechanical pencil released on November 29, 2024, to mark the 10th anniversary of the DelGuard line, which first launched in 2014. It is a Kyushu-limited model, sold at only three stores nationwide in a fixed quantity, which makes it one of the harder DelGuard variants to track down.

The regular DelGuard is priced at 1,100 yen, while this Type LX Gold version comes in at 2,200 yen, double the standard price. Whether the paint and packaging justify that gap is a fair question, and this review looks at what you actually get for it.

First Impressions and Design

Out of the box, the Type LX Gold is unapologetically flashy. The barrel is resin, coated in a large-particle gold paint that glitters noticeably when light hits it, with a glossy finish over the top. The gold section stays the same across all three colorways (Black Gold, Blue Gold, and Red Gold); the black parts change to match each color. This review covers the Black Gold variant.

The upper barrel carries printed branding, and the word DelGuard appears in black near the center ring. From the center down, the barrel turns metallic, widens slightly, and gains a very distinctive grip area with recessed texture and two raised lines running around it. That shaping gives real grip security and a solid hold while writing.

Other physical details: the clip is metal and fairly short, with a DelGuard emblem engraved on the top and a mark on its side, and it sits high enough that it does not dig into your hand while writing. The knock button is resin, split into two color zones, with a few small holes near the top that appear to be a safety vent. Cleverly, they are styled as part of the design and do not hurt the click feel. The pencil measures 146mm in length, weighs 20.9g, and has a 10.5mm barrel diameter, with a low center of gravity.

The DelGuard System

The DelGuard system is the headline feature and the source of the name. Pressing vertically on the lead makes an internal spring absorb the pressure, so the lead sinks inward like a soft cushion. Press hard at an angle, and a second mechanism extends the tip forward to shield the lead from snapping. Two safeguards working from two directions.

The tip pipe measures 3.2mm, and the mouth of the tip is resin and semi-translucent, so you can actually see the internal spring and rubber parts doing their job. It is a genuinely interesting mechanism to own and use, not just read about on the box.

One important practical note: the DelGuard system does not activate unless you press with fairly strong force. It is not a constantly cushioned mechanism in the way some competing systems are. That turned out to be a good thing in use, because the tip does not feel loose or floaty during normal, lighter writing.

Writing Performance

In actual use, the Type LX Gold writes better than expected. Because the protection system needs a strong press to engage, there is no odd wobble or unwanted tip movement during regular writing, and the lead behaves normally on the page.

The grip deserves real credit. The textured, flared lower barrel locks the pencil into your hand, and combined with the low balance point, writing feels stable and controlled. For a general-writing pencil (rather than a drafting model), the comfort level is genuinely high.

The knock feel is also a strong point: crisp and tactile with minimal play before each click, making it very satisfying to advance the lead. A small eraser is included under the cap, though there is no cleaning pin for clearing lead jams.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The price is the main sticking point. At 2,200 yen, this costs exactly double the standard 1,100 yen DelGuard, and it is hard not to wonder where the extra cost actually goes beyond the special coating.

The second issue is the knock cap. Several user reviews mention it coming loose easily, and the shallow fit of the cap does make that plausible. A deeper socket would have solved it, and it is worth being gentle when removing the cap to use the eraser.

Buying Advice

If you already like the look of the DelGuard line and want the standard model first, the regular version costs half as much and shares the core mechanism. But if the anniversary styling appeals to you, this is a limited run that is genuinely scarce: three stores nationwide, fixed quantity, Kyushu-limited. Anyone curious should not wait long.

For those who have never tried a DelGuard at all, the protection system is fun to experience in person, and this model turned out to be a pleasant surprise rather than the awkward writer it was feared to be before testing.

Conclusion

The Zebra DelGuard Type LX Gold pairs a genuinely clever dual lead-protection system with an anniversary finish that will not be for everyone, but the solid grip, good balance, and excellent click feel make it easy to enjoy daily. The loose knock cap and doubled price are the only real reservations. As a limited edition, it is worth acting quickly if it catches your eye.
