Introduction

Wood Pen Craft is a wooden pen brand launched by Wood Road, a company with a broad focus on wood-based products. The brand runs a dedicated wooden pen store where you can even book a hands-on wooden pen crafting experience. The Craft P01 is the brand’s ballpoint pen, and this time it comes in Someiyoshino, the iconic Japanese cherry tree.

At a tax-included price of 15,950 yen, this is a considered purchase. After spending time with it, here is what stood out, what did not, and who this pen is really for.

First Impressions: A Whiter Someiyoshino Than Ever

Someiyoshino wood has been offered several times before, but this is the first release with such a strikingly white tone. The grain is beautiful and the pale finish makes the pen feel genuinely special. When buying, you can choose the clip and ring color from eight options, and the pink-gold pairing is the natural match for a cherry blossom pen. The combination looks excellent.

The packaging deserves a note too: the standard box is elegant, and an optional wooden box (880 yen) has a lid that doubles as a pen tray, which is a nice touch if you plan to keep this pen on display. Included accessories are a manual, a warranty card, and even a small business card made from Kochi Prefecture cedar, plus a cute acorn charm.

Build, Click Mechanism, and Refills

The Craft P01 measures 138mm in length, weighs 30g, and has a maximum barrel diameter of 12mm. The balance point sits near the center with a slightly high-weight feel, and the wood itself is pleasant to hold.

The click mechanism uses a German click system. It is nearly silent and the push feel is light, an addictive sensation that makes you want to keep clicking. The knock button is flat and generously sized, so it is easy to press. The nose cone is machined in-house with 1/100mm precision, and the maker continues refining it daily, recently completing a new nose cone and internal mechanism that will appear in future ballpoint releases. This Someiyoshino unit still uses the previous version.

It ships with a G2-format Jetstream refill. A separately sold dedicated refill adapter lets you use D1-format refills instead, a good option if you prefer Acro ink. When swapping refills, the clip comes off with the barrel, so be careful not to lose it, and tighten the barrel correctly, avoiding the threads, or the click may stop working and a gap can spoil the writing feel. On the plus side, the clip can be repositioned anywhere you like.

Writing Feel and Balance

On paper, the pen writes smoothly and comfortably, exactly as expected from this brand. The center-weighted balance makes it easy to control, and the hand feel of the wood is a genuine part of the appeal. Over time, the wood ages and changes character, which adds a layer of enjoyment you do not get with metal or resin pens.

The clip does press against your hand while writing. If that bothers you, it can simply be removed. One more detail worth knowing: earlier models used brass for the nose cone, while current production has switched to stainless steel, so this pen’s nose cone is stainless rather than the brass used in older Wood Pen Craft ballpoints.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The obvious hurdle is price. At 15,950 yen tax included, this is not something most people, students especially, can buy casually. Even working adults will think twice before adding it to the cart.

That said, once you understand the machining precision, the original in-house mechanisms, and the brand’s constant drive to improve its pens even after release, the pricing starts to make sense. There is also a slight wobble at the tip on this unit, an area the updated nose cone addresses in newer models.

Buying Advice

This pen suits readers who value materials and craftsmanship over raw value-for-money. If you appreciate wood grain, enjoy pens that age gracefully, and want a click feel that is quiet and light, the Craft P01 Someiyoshino is a rewarding choice. If you are on a tight budget or prefer a workhorse pen you can replace without a second thought, look elsewhere.

Conclusion

Wood Pen Craft continues to pursue and refine its pens in ways few other wooden pen brands do, and the Craft P01 Someiyoshino captures that spirit in a pale, gorgeous body with pink-gold accents. The high price is the main barrier, but the beautiful wood, excellent writing feel, quiet click, and versatile G2 refill format make it a pen worth saving for if wooden pens are your thing.
