uni Jetstream Pure Malt Inside Single Review: A Wood Barrel Pen With Suprisingly High Polish

uni's new Pure Malt Inside Single pairs a whisky-barrel wood barrel with a Jetstream refill, and the build quality genuinely impressed us. Here is what holds up and what to check before buying.

Introduction

When the new Pure Malt Inside Single arrived, expectations were modest. The reveal turned out to be genuinely surprising: this is one of the most carefully finished mass-produced pens we have handled recently, and it sits comfortably at the level of uni’s premium Prime series. Released on December 16, 2025, the uni Jetstream Pure Malt Inside Single is priced at 4,180 yen including tax, and unlike the previous Pure Malt Single, it is an entirely new design built from the ground up.

First Impressions and Packaging

The package itself deserves a mention. It carries the casual-but-premium feel of recent uni Prime series products, and the paper has a wood-grain texture reproduced in three dimensions: the pen area is die-cut so you can actually touch the surface. The color and tactile finish show real attention to detail before you even open the box.

Inside, alongside the instruction sheet, sits the pen itself. The most notable change from the previous model is the refill: the old Pure Malt Single shipped with a standard oil-based refill, while this version comes loaded with a Jetstream from the start. We had expected a Jetstream Lite Touch to appear in this body, so the standard Jetstream choice was a surprise, and honestly a welcome one.

Design and Build Quality

The Pure Malt barrel reuses oak that has been used to age whisky for decades, which is the whole point of the Pure Malt concept. There is no noticeable aroma, but the warmth of the wood in the hand is excellent, especially compared with metal barrels that feel cold on first contact. Our unit is the Natural color, chosen because the grain and character are more visible and the pen should age beautifully. A Dark Brown version is also available with a nearly all-black look that is handsome in its own right.

Fingers pressing the pen's knock mechanism during writing at a desk

The silver-toned hardware has a subtle yellow tint closer to champagne gold than pure silver, and it pairs beautifully with the wood. The clip changes from the previous oval style to a thin plate clip with an upturned tip, the same design uni has been using on recent products. It looks like it might dig into the hand, but in practice it never became a distraction, and the sides are smoothly finished. The uni Pure Malt logo is engraved on the barrel, and the clip stiffness feels average.

The central ring is the biggest design change: it is now much slimmer than the wide, logo-bearing ring on the old model, which gives more room to the wood section. The trade-off is that the ring protrudes slightly beyond the barrel surface, which becomes relevant while writing. The grip fitting keeps the rounded shape of the Pure Malt series, and the knock is slimmer and simpler than the pointed knock of the older pencil-style predecessors, which could press uncomfortably into the finger.

The Knock and Mechanism

The knock has a clearly defined switch feel with a satisfyingly deep action and a pleasantly quiet click. It is an addictive feel that makes you want to keep clicking it. There is a slight wobble in the knock section itself, which raised concerns about writing stability, but once the tip is extended, the wobble disappears completely.

Refill changes are done by unscrewing the grip fitting, and the spring stays attached to it. An O-ring is used on the threads to keep everything from loosening, another sign of careful construction.

Refills and Compatibility

The initial refill is the Jetstream SXR-5 in 0.5mm. There is no 0.7mm option in this launch lineup, but you can swap in a 0.7mm refill if you prefer. Because the SXR-5 platform is shared, some C300-family refills also fit.

We tested a Pentel EnerGel refill out of curiosity, and it went in without issue. That compatibility opens up a wide range of ink colors, which greatly expands what this pen can be used for. We will keep running the Jetstream ourselves, but it is useful flexibility to have.

Specs and Balance

The pen measures 145mm in length, weighs 21.8g, and has a maximum barrel diameter of 12mm. The balance point sits near the center: neither too bottom-heavy nor too top-heavy, and neither too heavy nor too light. It is essentially the best balance we have tested in this class. The 12mm barrel gives a generous, stable grip.

Writing Performance

The actual writing experience is where this pen earns its price. It glides beautifully across the page, and tip wobble is kept to the bare minimum. Honestly, it is close to nonexistent, and it is impressive how well uni has tuned this mechanism in a mass-produced pen.

Combined with the warm wood barrel, the centered balance, and the comfortable wide grip, long writing sessions stay pleasant. The one recurring irritation is the central ring: it protrudes slightly above the barrel and the step touches the hand during writing, which is the main thing holding this pen back from perfection.

Buying Advice

The strengths are easy to summarize: a great-looking barrel with visible wood character, champagne-gold-toned hardware that suits it well, an exceptional lack of tip wobble, ideal balance, wood-only warmth and aging potential, a comfortable thick grip, and a knock that feels genuinely addictive. The package quality is also superb.

The price of 4,180 yen feels slightly high at first glance, but given the finish, it is a price we can accept. The protruding central ring is the only real drawback worth weighing. If you want a wooden barrel pen with a modern low-viscosity ink and do not mind that small step, this is an easy recommendation, and it has already become one of our favorite everyday pens.

Conclusion

The uni Jetstream Pure Malt Inside Single is one of the most polished recent releases from uni, with premium-series-level quality, careful details like the O-ring thread and refined knock, and the unique appeal of whisky-barrel oak. If the look appeals to you, it is well worth a closer look.
