TwinStar A-Series II and B-Series II: Budget Aquarium Lights Compared
Two new budget-friendly aquarium lights from TwinStar with expanded size options and included controllers. A practical comparison for planted and fish tanks.
Introduction
TwinStar has released upgraded versions of two budget aquarium lights: the A-Series II and B-Series II. Both models now include controllers and expanded size options, making them accessible for a wider range of tank setups. These lights are designed primarily for fish tanks but perform well with planted aquariums, whether low-tech or high-tech with CO2 injection.
What’s New in Version 2
The upgraded models introduce several meaningful improvements over the original versions. The most significant addition is the included controller, which features three buttons for power, dimming, and timer functions. The dimmer offers seven intensity steps, and the timer allows selection from three preset photoperiods: six, eight, or ten hours, with automatic ten-minute ramp-up and ramp-down cycles.

Size availability has also expanded. The original lineup offered 30cm, 45cm, 60cm, 90cm, and 120cm options. Version 2 adds a 20cm model for very small tanks and an 80cm option to fill the gap between 60cm and 90cm. This broader range means nearly any aquarium size can find a suitable light.
A-Series II: Compact Budget Option
The A-Series II 30cm model is rated for tanks up to 45cm and delivers 770 lumens at 11 watts power consumption. It uses WRGB LEDs at 6500 Kelvin color temperature. The housing is straightforward: a compact black unit with mounting legs that slide into the sides and click into feet. Assembly is simple and requires no tools.

At 35 Euros for the 30cm version, the A-Series II offers strong value. The largest 120cm model costs only 90 Euros. In testing on a 30cm cube with high-tech setup (CO2 injection), the light appeared darker than higher-end models but still provided usable illumination. On a low-tech vase setup without CO2 or filtration, the A-Series II proved well-suited, showing natural color definition between bright greens and pink-toned plants like Ludwigia. The light is best matched to low-tech planted tanks or standard fish-keeping setups where maximum brightness is not required.
B-Series II: Higher Output Alternative
The B-Series II 45cm model is rated for tanks up to 60cm and delivers 1300 lumens at 20 watts. It uses the same WRGB 6500K LEDs but with more red, green, and blue LEDs relative to white compared to the A-Series II. The 30cm B-Series II contains 32 LEDs versus 28 in the A-Series II, and the B-Series II is noticeably brighter overall.

In testing, the B-Series II showed significantly more output than the A-Series II. On a 40cm tank with mixed green plants, colors appeared natural without looking washed out or oversaturated. The brightness was sufficient that on the highest setting, it could risk algae issues in a low-tech setup without CO2. For high-tech planted tanks with CO2 injection, the B-Series II is a strong fit, providing adequate light for demanding plant growth without the cost of premium models.
New Features and Controller Design
Both models ship with an identical controller featuring three buttons: power on/off, a seven-step dimmer, and a timer with three preset photoperiods (6, 8, or 10 hours). The dimmer allows fine control over light intensity, and the timer includes automatic ramp-up and ramp-down to simulate natural sunrise and sunset. This is a meaningful upgrade from the original versions, which did not include controllers.

The controller is straightforward to use and adds flexibility without requiring app connectivity or complex setup. For users seeking app control or more advanced scheduling, these lights do not offer that feature.
Brightness and Color Performance
Both lights render colors naturally without excessive saturation. The A-Series II suits low-tech setups where lower light levels prevent algae issues. The B-Series II delivers enough output for high-tech planted tanks with CO2 injection, though it may be overkill for simple fish-only tanks. Neither light wins design awards, but both are functional and compact. The included controller is a practical addition that justifies the upgrade from Version 1.
Conclusion
The TwinStar A-Series II and B-Series II are solid budget options for aquarium lighting. The A-Series II is best for low-tech planted tanks or fish-only setups, while the B-Series II suits high-tech planted tanks with CO2. Expanded size options and included controllers make both models more versatile than their predecessors. If choosing between them, the B-Series II offers more brightness and flexibility, though the A-Series II provides better value for simpler setups.
