Sakura Craft Lab 008 Review: A Knock-Style Ballpoint with Real Craft Appeal

Sakura Craypas' Craft Lab 008 is the series' first knock-style ballpoint, combining an anodized aluminum barrel, machined brass grip, and a beautifully balanced writing feel.

Introduction

Sakura Craypas has been releasing a new Craft Lab model every year as the premium line of its stationery range, and this year’s entry marks a first for the series: the Craft Lab 008 is a knock-style ballpoint. The design was teased well before launch, and anticipation was high. After spending real writing time with it, the pen largely lives up to that anticipation, with a couple of trade-offs worth knowing about before you buy.

Design and First Impressions

The 008 arrives in packaging similar in style to previous Craft Lab releases, with the usual manual and warranty documents inside. The color lineup covers four finishes: Triton Gold, Acid Pink, Groove Green, and Bebop Blue. This review covers the Triton Gold variant, which continues the series’ reputation for striking design and clearly carries over some of the atmosphere of the original 001.

The barrel is anodized and dyed aluminum, while the grip section is machined brass. The shaft shape is similar to the 007, essentially a thicker version of that slim design. The result is a barrel that is neither too slim nor too chunky, and in practice the 008 is the more comfortable of the two to hold. The grip is polished brass without knurling, but its natural texture gives a secure, confident hold.

Specifications are as follows: total length 136mm, weight 25g, and shaft diameter 10.2mm.

Balance and Build Quality

The weight balance is one of the most impressive aspects of this pen. Visually, the knock end looks heavy, but pairing an aluminum shaft with a brass grip shifts the center of gravity to near the middle of the pen. That balance adjustment works remarkably well and makes the pen feel nimble in the hand despite its metal construction.

Build quality and the overall sense of luxury are exactly what you would expect from this series. The brass components have a satisfying, substantial feel that immediately separates the 008 from plastic-bodied pens.

Knock Mechanism and Clip

The knock action is quieter than its appearance suggests. Rather than a sharp, clicky switch feel, it is closer to a silent knock in the style of Caran d’Ache, with a faint tick sound layered in. It is a distinct character of its own, and a genuinely pleasant one.

The clip extends from the knock button itself, so pressing the knock makes the whole clip move down. There was concern about the clip scratching the barrel, but a small gap keeps it from making contact, so that worry is unfounded. The trade-off is that the clip, while able to hook over thicker items, cannot grip thin paper; a sheet simply slides out without resistance. The clip’s shape also departs noticeably from the previous glasses-style design, with a simple, refined profile growing out of the knock end.

The knock button carries a machined brass top with a circular ripple pattern, and the Sakura logo sits at its center, designed like ripples spreading across water with a cherry blossom floating on the surface. It is a beautiful detail. One caveat: the logo is printed rather than engraved or laser-etched, which raises concerns about wear over long-term use.

Writing Performance

The included refill is the OHTO R-4C5NE… rather, the RLG B05A 0.5mm black refill, and it delivers a dark, crisp line. The writing feel combines a distinct toothy feedback with a smooth undergliding quality, and tip wiggle is present but adjusted to a very low level.

Hand writing smoothly on white paper with a slim metal pen

This refill character is worth dwelling on, because it defines the whole series. The Craft Lab line’s refills have a scratchy, paper-gripping feel that some writers will not enjoy at first. That said, long-term owners often report growing into it, and it is by no means poor performance, just a distinct personality.

Things to Consider Before Buying

Three points deserve attention before purchasing:

  • The writing feel divides opinion. The series-typical scratchy feedback is a signature of the Craft Lab line, but it is not for everyone.
  • Brass means a metallic smell. With this much brass on the grip, some users will notice a distinct metal odor on the hands. If that bothers you, look elsewhere.
  • The printed logo may wear. The cherry blossom mark on the knock button is printed, and it sits exactly where your fingers rest with every click. Over years of use, fading is a realistic concern. It may have been a deliberate choice for smoother touch feel, but an engraving would have aged better.

Buying Advice

The Craft Lab 008 suits buyers who prioritize design, materials, and build quality over an ultra-smooth refill. If you own previous Craft Lab models, especially the 001 or 007, the 008 is a natural continuation and the series’ first knock mechanism is genuinely convenient. The price in Japan is 7,150 yen including tax, positioning it as a premium everyday pen. If a scratchier refill or metallic scent is a dealbreaker for you, this series will not change your mind, and that is fine. For everyone else, the balance, feel, and looks make a strong case.

Conclusion

The Sakura Craft Lab 008 is a beautiful, well-balanced knock-style ballpoint that extends a strong series in a new direction. The writing feel is divisive but has a habit of growing on owners over time, and the printed logo is the only real design compromise. If the design hooks you the way it hooked so many with the 001, this is an easy recommendation.
