Sakura Craft Lab 006 Review: A Build-Your-Own Premium Ballpoint Pen
Sakura Craft Lab 006 lets you pick the body, grip, clip, and refill to build one of 288 possible combinations. Here is what a week of daily use revealed.
Introduction
Sakura Craypas released the Craft Lab 006 in November 2021 as the sixth entry in its Craft Lab series, and it is one of the more unusual premium pens on the market. Instead of buying a finished pen, you choose a body, a grip section, a clip, and a refill, then assemble them yourself. The concept is simple: design the pen you want to make. In practice that means 288 possible combinations.
Before going further, one honest note: this is an expensive product. If you are considering it, take your time with the decision rather than buying on impulse.
What Is Sakura Craft Lab 006?
The 006 is the first Craft Lab product built around a ballpoint format, and the packaging reflects the modular concept. The box is notably large because each part type ships in its own compartment: the barrel body, the core, the clip, and the refills. Even the individual components carry prices that reflect serious material costs, which becomes clear the moment you lift them out of the box.

Choosing Your Parts
Four body options are available: Royal Navy, Classic Black, Atomic Silver, and Agate Green. Royal Navy and Agate Green have a matte aluminum texture, while Classic Black and Atomic Silver carry a glossy chrome finish. Colors look noticeably deeper in person than online photos suggest, which is worth knowing before ordering sight unseen.
The grip section, called the Fore, comes in four varieties: Pipe Wood, Nickel Silver, Gold, and Timeless Black. Gold and Silver are glossy, Black is matte. Pipe Wood is natural wood, so no two grips are identical. If you can visit a physical store, it may be possible to see stock in person and pick the specific wood grain you prefer.

Clips come in Gold, Silver, and Black. Unlike the 001 in the series, the 006’s gold clip has a glossy finish. Refills are offered in six colors: Jet Black, Blue Black, Brown Black, Bordeaux Black, and Green Black, among others. Each part set bundles related pieces: the body includes the barrel, cap, and core; the Fore includes the grip, nose cone, and a logo plate with the sakura cherry blossom logo engraved in relief. The logo plate uses the same material as the barrel, and swapping it alone noticeably changes the pen’s impression.
Assembly and Refill Swapping
Assembly is genuinely simple. Slide the grip into the barrel, aligning the cut in the grip with the cut in the barrel. Attach the feather-like fitting to the tip of the refill and cap it with the body, then tighten the nose cone, which locks the grip and barrel together. The clip mounts to the cap: seat it in the notches and secure it with the logo plate as you close the cap. Take care not to let the small feather fitting spring away during the process.

Swapping refills follows the same path in reverse: open the cap, remove the nose cone, and pull out the refill. Keep the pen tip pointed upward while doing this so the grip and barrel do not separate unexpectedly.
For reference, the finished pen measures 144mm in length, weighs 12.6g, and has a 10mm grip diameter.
Writing Feel and Daily Use
The grip has a noticeable step where it meets the barrel, but in hand it feels easier to hold than expected, and the balance sits lower than anticipated; this is a low-centered pen, not a top-heavy one. Writing itself is unremarkable in a neutral way: nothing snags, ink flows smoothly, but there is no strongly distinctive feel to the grip or the stroke either.
After more than a week of daily work use, the strongest impression is the quality of the materials. The finish photographs beautifully, the barrel slit that lets the core show through is a subtle touch, and the sakura logo plate is a genuine highlight. The refills themselves are stylishly colored, with the main ink reading as black with a slight tint, so the pen presents no problem in an office setting.

Things to Consider Before Buying
The price is the biggest hurdle. The body alone costs as much as a solid premium pen, and the core is priced in the same territory again. The 006 uses a generous amount of original developed parts, so the cost is understandable, but it is still a purchase that makes even stationery lovers hesitate.
There is also a frustrating limitation in the part system. For example, if you want to change only the logo plate to match a gold clip, you currently need to buy an entire Brass Gold core plus the clip separately. A clip-and-logo-plate bundle would make customizing far friendlier.
The cap is another point: it is very stiff, stiff enough that opening it one-handed is a struggle. It may soften with use, but it feels like an area with room for improvement. The removed cap can be posted on the back of the pen, though it does not seat fully, so resting it on a desk is the better option. If you want to stand the pen upright, only the cap end will support it.
Buying Advice
Availability is limited. At the time of writing, online sales are scarce and the pen is sold only through designated retailers. Check the Craft Lab website for its list of handling stores, and if possible visit in person to feel the finishes before committing. Seeing the actual colors matters here: the deep Royal Navy and the darker-than-expected Agate Green both look very different in hand than in product photos.
This pen suits someone who values the experience of building and maintaining their own writing tool. Disassembling and cleaning it as it picks up wear is part of the appeal, and handling every part yourself builds real attachment.
Conclusion
The Sakura Craft Lab 006 is a beautifully made modular pen with a few clear compromises: a high price, a stiff cap, and an ordinary writing feel given the cost. What you pay for is the materials, the design freedom, and the quiet pleasure of assembling something you chose piece by piece. If that appeals to you, it delivers. If you simply want a great writing pen at the same budget, look elsewhere first.
