Sailor Regno Double Review: A Wood-Body Multi-Pen That Rewards Patience
A discontinued maple-barrel multi-pen with two ballpoints and a pencil. Great feel and smooth writing, with a high center of balance worth knowing about first.
Introduction
Multi-pens are usually made of plastic or metal, so a wood-barrel model from a major manufacturer is genuinely rare. The Sailor Regno Double is exactly that: a wooden multi-function pen carrying a 0.7mm black ballpoint, a 0.7mm red ballpoint, and a 0.5mm mechanical pencil in one body. It launched at a tax-included price of 3,850 yen in Japan, and it has since been discontinued, which makes it harder to track down but also more interesting for stationery fans who want something with character.
After spending real writing time with it, it turned out better than expected and earned a place in daily rotation. There are compromises, though, and one of them matters a lot depending on how you hold a pen.
First Impressions and Design
The packaging looks dated for a current-era product, and that is because this model has been around for a while rather than being a new release. Inside the box you get the pen plus an instruction leaflet and warranty documentation, nothing more elaborate.
The barrel is maple wood, produced with material and technical cooperation from a major Japanese sports equipment manufacturer, using surplus wood that was not suitable for baseball bat production. It is offered in four finishes: Natural, Brown, Pink, and Black. The Pink and Black versions are colored, most likely painted, but the natural version shows the wood grain directly. Colored wooden multi-pens from major manufacturers are unusual, which makes this line notable even if availability is now a real problem.

The wood feels warm in the hand in a way plastic never does, and the pen is fairly heavy for its size. Hardware is brass with a glossy finish that gives the pen a more premium presence than the price suggests. A center engraving shows the refill color and Sailor Japan branding, though it is cut quite shallow; deeper engraving would have given it more dimension. The clip is a straight design with a soft, flexible spring, and the rounded metal ferrule does not detach from the body.

Specifications at a Glance
- Full length: 140mm
- Weight: 31.2g
- Barrel diameter: 11mm
- Mechanism: twist action for both ballpoints, knock action for the pencil
- Colors: Natural, Brown, Pink, Black
The twist mechanism works in both directions and rotates continuously, with a light click as the refill locks into place. Movement feels reasonably smooth in daily use. The pencil uses a knock action, and the knock itself feels firm and relatively shallow.
Refills are simple to swap: pull the barrel apart and replace the refill. The included refills are Sailor’s standard type, which means you can also fit common alternatives such as Uni Jetstream or Acro Ink refills of the same standard, a nice flexibility for a wooden multi-pen. One practical note: the pencil section contains a small eraser under the cap.
Writing Performance
The black ballpoint is the standout. It writes smoothly with a pleasant, soft feel, and the slightly cushioned tip gives a comfortable glide across the page. The red refill is also smooth, though the ink color reads a little light compared with stronger red inks.

The pencil has a soft, gentle touch that writes comfortably without being scratchy. As with most multi-pens, wiggling the tip with a finger reveals some play, but during actual writing this was not distracting or bothersome.
The one ergonomic issue is balance. At 31.2g with weight concentrated toward the top of the barrel, the pen has a noticeably high center of gravity. Writers who grip near the tip may feel the pen swinging or pulling as they write, and fatigue can set in sooner than expected. If you hold a pen further back, this will matter less.
Things to Consider Before Buying
This is a pen with clear trade-offs:
- Excellent writing feel on the ballpoints, with smooth, soft delivery
- Warm, natural wood touch that develops more luster with use
- Simple, understated design that fits any setting, from office to journal
- With the Natural finish, the aging of the wood becomes part of the appeal
Against that:
- The high center of balance makes it tiring for writers who grip close to the tip
- The pencil knock is difficult to use. Supporting the barrel with your ring and little fingers is awkward because the smooth wooden shaft slips, and the long distance from grip to knock section requires a firm squeeze
- It is discontinued, so stock is limited and prices may rise
Buying Advice
If you value writing feel and material character over perfect balance, this is an easy recommendation. The wood barrel is genuinely pleasant, the brass details elevate the look, and the option to run Jetstream or Acro Ink refills makes the ballpoint side easy to live with long term. The pen grows more attractive as the wood develops sheen with use, which is a slow reward most modern pens simply do not offer.

If you grip pens close to the tip and are sensitive to balance, think twice before committing, since the top-heavy feel is the most repeated complaint. For everyone else, especially anyone drawn to the scarcity of wood-body multi-pens from a major brand, buying one soon is wise. Remaining stock is already limited, and the leather-wrapped variant of the same series is still available if the plain wood is sold out where you shop.
Conclusion
The Sailor Regno Double turned out to be better than expected and is easy to like: smooth ballpoints, a soft pencil, warm maple construction, and brass hardware that looks more expensive than it is. The high center of balance and the awkward pencil knock are real flaws, but neither ruins the experience for writers with a middle-grip or further-back hold. As a discontinued piece of practical Japanese stationery with a genuinely unusual material story, it is worth seeking out while it can still be found.
