Introduction

Platinum’s Double Action Sterling Silver Red is a multi-pen that leans on material rather than gimmicks. The full barrel is made from sterling silver, and this Red variant carries a vertical groove engraving along the body. Inside, you get a 0.7mm ballpoint that can write in black or red, plus a 0.5mm pencil. It arrived in a fairly large, solidly built presentation box, which signals where Platinum positions this model.

The list price is 11,000 yen including tax, though prices on Amazon fluctuate and it has been available in the 7,000 yen range, which makes it genuinely good value for the material.

What Is Sterling Silver, and Why It Matters Here

The body is sterling silver, meaning Silver 925: 92.5 percent of the metal is actual silver. That distinction matters more than it sounds. A product can legally be labelled silver with only 1 percent silver content, but the Silver 925 mark is a certification that only applies at 92.5 percent. If a pen claims to be silver without this kind of marking, it may contain very little silver, so it is worth checking.

There is also a practical caveat. Sterling silver tarnishes black when it contacts sulfur, and that sulfur is present in everyday things like hot springs (a pen in a chest pocket at a hot spring town will blacken quickly) and rubber. Don’t wrap rubber bands around it or store it near rubber. If you stop using the pen for a while, it will start to darken, so wiping the surface before storage helps. If tarnish does appear, silver polish or a non-gritty toothpaste will restore the shine, though expect minor scratches. Baking soda is also said to work.

Design and Specifications

Platinum offers this Double Action Sterling Silver line in three patterns: a woven-texture engraving (ami-goshi), a lozenge-pattern engraving (hishi-ko), and this Red variant with vertical grooves. The vertical grooves are cut fairly deep, which means the grip is effective and the pen sits securely in the hand.

The model originally launched in 2006 as a 30th anniversary edition for Platinum before becoming a regular model. Anniversary editions can be identified by having a single ring instead of the three rings on the current version. The center ring carries engraving reading Double Action, Platinum, Japan, 0.5, and the back of the barrel has a nameplate space.

The clip is thin, rounded, and reasonably flexible, making it easy to use. Mechanically, the pen uses a rotational selector: twist left for black, right for red, and further right for the pencil. It is not an endlessly spinning mechanism, and there is no eraser under the cap; the top unscrews but only the clip comes off, so it is best left alone. The included refill is a 0.7mm BSP-100S metal ballpoint refill.

Key measurements: total length 143mm, weight 32.7g, maximum barrel diameter 12mm. The balance point sits toward the top of the pen.

How It Writes

The black 0.7mm ballpoint writes smoothly, with occasional light skipping but an overall easy, fluid feel. The red refill performs the same way, and both feel closer to a 0.5mm line than the 0.7mm rating suggests.

The 0.5mm pencil shows a little lead wobble, which is almost unavoidable in a multi-pen, but it stays within acceptable limits. For a three-function pen, this level of control is more than sufficient.

Everyday Practicality

The high balance is worth understanding before buying. Held at a comfortably high position, the pen does not feel like it is pulling backward, so the weight distribution works in practice.

After about a week of use, it also clips smoothly into the chest pocket of a suit jacket, which is a small but genuinely appreciated quality for a pen like this.

Things to Consider Before Buying

Two points are worth weighing up. First, the nameplate space on the back of the barrel. It is standard across Platinum’s sterling silver series and invisible during use, but without it the beautiful vertical groove engraving would run across the full barrel, so it is a shame from a design standpoint, even if useful for anyone who wants to engrave a name.

Second, the smell. The pen has a distinct metallic odor, and fingers pick it up after use. If that bothers you, this is probably not your pen.

Buying Advice

The strengths are clear: the look is genuinely striking, the deep vertical grooves provide a secure grip and stable writing, it clips neatly into formal wear, and the balance works well when held correctly. Above all, a sterling silver multi-pen for around 10,000 yen (and less when discounted) is unusually affordable; comparable pens often cost twice as much.

On the other hand, this pen asks for some attention. It can be used without thinking about it, but keeping the shine requires regular wiping and proper storage. That said, tarnish and patina can become part of the charm. Whether you maintain the polish, embrace the darkened character, or simply keep it on display to admire, there is more than one way to enjoy it.

Conclusion

The Platinum Double Action Sterling Silver Red is a distinctive multi-pen with real silver construction, a usable three-function layout, and a price that undercuts most metal rivals. It demands a little care in exchange for its beauty, but if that trade-off appeals to you, it is easy to recommend for both personal use and as a gift.
