Ortur R2 Review: Powerful Laser Modules Held Back by Software and Homing Issues
The Ortur R2 pairs excellent laser modules with a solid frame, but software frustrations and rehoming inaccuracy make it hard to recommend.
Introduction
The Ortur R2 is an uncommon machine in that its half-baked existence and lack of polish interferes with its ability to be as useful or innovative as its creators intended. While it is capable in its own right, there is nothing about it that feels easy to use. The companion app leaves much to be desired, and while LightBurn compatibility is technically there, it clearly plays second fiddle to an insufficient app experience.
There is a lot to love about this laser: the size, the overall design, and Ortur’s first-class laser modules. Still, it is hard to say those things make up for a downright bad software experience, broken homing technology, and other issues that simply should not exist in 2025 on a machine at this price.
Who This Machine Is For
The Ortur R2 is available in multiple configurations. The kit reviewed here included the 20 W 455 nanometer diode module with an air pump and the 1.3 W IR module, running just over $1,100. That puts high expectations on the machine from the start.
The R2 is best suited for users who already appreciate Ortur’s laser module quality and want a large-format desktop machine. It offers a 300 x 190 mm workspace, or 300 x 210 mm when using one of the smaller modules. The gantry moves at 20,000 mm per minute, making it one of the faster hobby-grade diode machines in its class.

That said, the machine is not ideal for users who need precise multi-pass work or who expect a polished software experience out of the box. The rehoming inaccuracy and unfinished app make it a frustrating choice for beginners and professionals alike.
Hardware and Build Quality
The Ortur R2 arrives in secure packaging with plenty of cardboard and foam, and there is really no assembly required. The entire unit is essentially ready to go out of the box. Included pack-ins include large physical posters with a wide selection of presets for dozens of materials across Ortur’s various diode modules, a thoughtful addition that many users will appreciate.
The frame feels sturdy and confidence-inspiring. The protective cover is genuinely well thought out, not just an afterthought. It was one of the most difficult interlock switches to defeat, which is great news for the safety conscious. An emergency stop button sits right on the chassis, something many machines in this class still lack.
A built-in camera in the lid is a nice touch for workflow and positioning, usually only seen on more expensive machines. The articulating display has vibrant colors and great viewing angles, making the machine feel more premium. Unfortunately, the screen does pretty much nothing, which we will get to later.
The workbed is removable, giving bottom panel pass-through. The included cut blades are a disappointment: there are only four of them, they are not enough, and they loosely sit in the workspace with no way to lock them into place. They are literally designed to just be thrown in however you feel like it.
Laser Modules: The Best Part of the R2
The laser modules are where the Ortur R2 really shines. Ortur has always masterfully crafted their laser modules, and they remain some of the best on the market. The bundle reviewed here includes two excellent options: the LU3-20A, a 20 W 455 nanometer blue diode laser, and the LR41A, a 1.3 W 1064 nanometer infrared module. Both deliver outstanding performance.

The 20 W blue module has excellent spot accuracy, impressive cutting power for its size, and produces surprisingly beautiful photo engravings. Ortur suggests a spot size of around 0.08 mm for this module. A spot size test on plywood measured about 0.14 mm, which is a less than ideal testing scenario, so the estimates are probably accurate on better substrates. A built-in focal gauge on the head makes setup fast and consistent every time, ensuring the smallest dot possible for detail-oriented tasks.
The result is gorgeous photo work. Near-perfect photo engraving is achievable right out of the box with LightBurn and a little dot width adjustment. The 20 W module is also more than enough for most cutting tasks you would tackle with a machine in this class, though there are serious issues with cutting related to the machine itself.

The 1064 nanometer infrared module is a monster in its own category. It features a red dot targeting laser for easy alignment, and the power density it delivers is exceptional. The module may only be 1.3 W, but since it is focused so closely to the material and the spot size is so compact, its abilities are seriously impressive. It is strong enough to mark brass cleanly, something almost unheard of at this price point.
In one real-world test, a 12-inch brass plate that a customer ordered had gone through three failed attempts on an 80 W fiber laser with a 300 mm lens. The energy density simply was not enough to mark the plate consistently. A fresh plate in the Ortur R2 produced a perfect customer-ready plate on the first try. Together, these two laser modules make the R2 incredibly versatile, letting you move seamlessly between organic materials and metals with professional-level results.
Performance and the Rehoming Problem
On paper, the Ortur R2 has the specs to deliver strong performance, and in many ways it does. It is capable of tackling a wide range of engraving and cutting jobs at genuinely high speeds, and the higher power laser modules make it possible to take on pro-level projects that a lot of diode machines cannot touch. The large bed size gives plenty of room for bigger pieces, which is great for batch work or larger engravings.
But all of that potential is overshadowed by one massive issue: rehoming accuracy. Every time the R2 returns home, it loses its exact position, particularly along the Y-axis. That means if you try to rerun a job or even perform a second pass after the fact, it will not line up correctly. For a precision tool like this, that is completely unacceptable at any price point.
As a result, if you need multiple passes for a project, they all have to be cued and run back to back without letting the machine return home. Otherwise, your alignment will be off. This single flaw severely impacts what could have been excellent performance.
When the manufacturer was contacted about the problem, the representative said that after checking, the main line of the first batch of goods was a little shorter, which may cause some machines to rebound after zeroing. The only suggested fix was to decrease the area of the work area artificially to reduce the bounceback effect caused by the cable. After reducing the work area with stoppers up to an additional 50 mm, there was still no noticeable change.
Software Experience: Where the R2 Stumbles
The software experience is frankly a mess. The Inspirth app, supposed to be the main companion for the machine, is not even available through normal channels. You have to sideload it, and worse, it comes with an APKX file, which means you cannot install it directly. You actually need to download another app just to install this one. That is a frustrating and unnecessary extra step that most users simply will not want to deal with.
Even after you get it installed, the experience does not improve much. The app feels unfinished, with limited functionality, confusing menus, and output quality that cannot compare to what you get in LightBurn. There is no vector-based editing at all. Everything is rasterized, which makes it feel clunky and restrictive, especially when trying to do something precise and having to deal with the arbitrary margins of the raster previews when trying to size things correctly.

The good news is that the R2 is compatible with LightBurn, and it performs well there. That is where it earns a few points back, but even LightBurn has its headaches with this machine. For example, the IR module constantly triggers flame detection, and there is no way to disable that setting from within LightBurn. The only solution is to physically unplug the sensors. It is a giant hassle and there is no documentation or warning about it anywhere.
Then there is the onboard screen, which while bright and beautiful, does not actually do much. You cannot control the laser manually unless you are running a preloaded job. There is no jog control during setup, no real-time adjustments, and no way to update the firmware directly through its interface. Despite the machine’s Wi-Fi connection, jobs sent from LightBurn are not saved in the job history. Stored jobs do not show previews, and overall it just feels like a huge missed opportunity.
For comparison, even much cheaper machines ship with a fully functional touchscreen OS that lets you control motion, settings, firmware updates, and even basic design creation right on the device. The R2’s screen, by contrast, looks premium but behaves like a glorified status display. Massive software updates are needed here to make the user experience live up to how impressive the hardware looks.
Pricing and Value
Based on listing numbers, the base machine without any modules would cost around $530. You are paying sticker price of $319 for the 1.3 W 1064 module in any configuration. That is expected and fine. They are expensive to produce, and this particular IR module performs, so it is worth the price.
You are also saving quite a bit off the sticker price of the 20 W module. Whether you get the IR module or not, either configuration costs $269 for the 20 W module, whereas if you bought it separately you would be paying $549. That is a solid deal.
Unfortunately, that savings ends up subsidizing the cost of the R2 itself. While $269 is a screaming deal for this excellent diode module, the $530 you are spending on the R2 itself is most definitely not. The consistency issues with homing leave a lot to be desired, and much less expensive machines ship with complete touchscreen controllers that offer vastly more enjoyable user experiences.
Buying Advice
The Ortur R2 has some genuinely impressive hardware. The chassis feels solid, the cover is well designed, and the laser modules themselves are outstanding. In fact, the modules are the best part of this entire package.
If you already own an Ortur Laser Master 3, you are getting nearly the same cutting and engraving performance for far less money with far fewer headaches. In that case, it makes more sense to consider simply purchasing the modules as an upgrade rather than buying the R2.
The R2’s software usability and reliability drag it down hard. The broken homing system alone is a dealbreaker for anyone doing precise work, and the current app situation is flat-out unacceptable for a machine in this price bracket. Until Ortur commits to major firmware and software updates and proves they have fixed the rehoming issue, this is not a machine that can be recommended.
Conclusion
At the end of the day, the R2 feels like a promising prototype that escaped into production. The foundation is solid, but the execution needs work, and a lot of it. If Ortur can polish the software, fix the alignment issues, and give users proper control through LightBurn, this could be a truly great machine. But as it stands right now, you are better off sticking with the Laser Master 3 and pairing it with one of these excellent new modules instead.
