Introduction

OHTO has been pushing out new products with real intent lately. After the camouflage-patterned CR01 and the mechanically styled MS01, the brand’s numbered series continues with the GS02, a full-metal ballpoint pen priced at 1,500 yen tax included. It also arrives with something rare: a newly developed ceramic roller refill of its own. After spending real writing time with it, here is how the GS02 holds up.

First Impressions and Design

The GS02 ships in a cardboard-style package that continues across the new numbering series, and it has a warmth to it that is easy to like. Out of the box, the first things you notice are the weight and the cool touch of the metal barrel, followed quickly by how genuinely stylish it looks.

The GS02 is a full-metal body: aluminum for the shaft with brass components. The color range covers Pearl White, Mint, Khaki, and Black, and while the other three colors get a matte finish, the Pearl White uses a pearl coating that shifts in tone depending on the viewing angle. Colors like this are often treated as limited editions by other manufacturers, but OHTO offers it as a standard color, which is a nice touch.

Body, Build and Balance

The standout design feature is the form of the barrel. The grip section is hexagonal, which makes it easy to hold, and it gradually transitions into a round shaft toward the top. Other pens have played with similar geometry by combining separate metal parts, but OHTO has long described this form as one of a kind because the GS02 shifts from hexagonal to round in a single piece of metal.

Details are well considered. The brass tip ferrule is black with a tapered, waisted shape. The clip uses OHTO’s signature SK special steel, and it sits on the softer side in terms of stiffness. The knock button is long with a strong, clearly defined switch feel, finished in chrome plating that adds a nice accent.

In hand, the balance sits near the center. Specifications: total length 138mm, weight 22.5g, barrel diameter 10.2mm.

Writing Performance and the New Refill

The GS02 comes with a newly developed ceramic roller refill running on water-based gel ink. It uses a metal G2-standard needle-type tip, which is genuinely uncommon in this form, and the tip ball is a silicon carbide ceramic ball. OHTO describes the refill as quick-drying, with improved water resistance and friction resistance, and compatible with polymer film surfaces.

In actual use, the refill is excellent. The writing feel is very smooth, the ink lays down dark and rich, and the tip shows almost no wobble. There is a very slight sensation of the needle-tip ball sinking into the page as you write, which some writers will find divisive, but it reads as a light, settled contact rather than a flaw. Given how good it is, this refill seems like it could sell well as a standalone item.

Things to Consider Before Buying

A few practical points came up during use. The clip sits where your hand contacts the barrel while writing, so it can press into your fingers. The knock feel is also a matter of taste: it is firm, with a slightly gritty, friction-like sensation rather than a crisp clean click, and because the knock section is slim on top of being firm, fingers can feel a little sore after repeated clicking. None of these are dealbreakers, but they are worth knowing about beforehand.

Buying Advice

The GS02’s strengths add up nicely: an appealing, adventurous color lineup, a comfortable grip, good balance, an outstanding new refill, and strong value for the price. For anyone after a full-metal everyday pen with genuine character at a reasonable cost, this is an easy one to recommend. If you are sensitive about clip placement or very particular about knock feel, try to handle one first if you can.

Conclusion

OHTO’s GS02 turned out better than expected. While the previous MS01 did not feel especially fresh, the GS02 is easy to like and looks well suited to daily use. It may even reinforce the impression that OHTO makes its best ballpoint pens rather than its mechanical pencils. If the design and that ceramic refill sound appealing, the GS02 is worth a closer look.
