Nitecore HA23 Review: A Featherweight Head Torch Built for Adventure
A 56g headlamp with MCT colour-temperature lighting, 600 lumens, and an IP68 rating at a very competitive price.
Introduction
The Nitecore HA23 is a head torch designed with outdoor adventuring in mind. It packs clever MCT technology that delivers multi-colour-temperature lighting, a dual power solution, a max output of 600 lumens with a 132-metre beam length, and all of it in a super-light unit weighing just 56 grams. At around $36, it is also incredibly good value. After well over a month of testing across training runs and trail sessions, here is how it has held up.
First Impressions and Design
Despite the small, compact packaging, the box is packed full of goodies. Alongside the unit itself you get three AAA batteries, so the HA23 can run off standard batteries or one of Nitecore’s HLB 1500mAh rechargeable batteries, which can be purchased separately. There is also a handy multi-purpose clip that attaches to the back of the head unit and a small diffusing sack that turns the head torch into a little lantern, perfect for camping trips. A leaflet explaining the MCT technology and a user manual round it out.

The head torch comes with a lightweight elastic, fully adjustable head strap with small perforations worked in all the way around for extra breathability. Lots of high-visibility detailing makes it safer for nighttime running, silicon grippers sit up front to stop movement, and the strap removes easily from the light unit for washing. The body is constructed from durable PC material to keep weight to a bare minimum, and a dual-switch interface sits on top of the lamp: a textured power button for on/off and brightness levels, plus a mode button to switch between neutral white, warm white, and cool white light. The mode button also activates the built-in auxiliary red light, useful for preserving night vision or in emergencies.

Light Output, Modes, and Battery Life
One thing worth highlighting: the three colour temperatures all come with the same performance figures, which keeps everything simple. Ultra-low mode gives you 6 lumens, handy around the campsite or in a tricky situation. Low mode jumps to 100 lumens, bright enough for hiking, walking, or road running on well-lit streets. Mid setting delivers 280 lumens, comfortably bright for most running situations, from well-trodden training trails to technical descents. High mode reaches 600 lumens for moving fast or lighting up a very dark section of trail.
The red light feature is a great addition for close-proximity lighting when you are around other people, whether camping, hiking, or running. Beyond that, the HA23 also offers a blue LED battery indicator on the front, an emergency SOS mode that flashes Morse code, a 600-lumen beacon mode, and a slow-flashing red light. All of this is wrapped in an IP68 waterproof rating, meaning the unit can withstand up to two metres of water immersion, so it should hold up to tough UK winter conditions. Three colour options are available: rock black, misty blue, and forest green.
Burn time differs depending on whether you use the supplied AAA batteries or Nitecore’s HLB 1500mAh rechargeable battery, with the rechargeable cell almost doubling burn time in all four modes. Using a rechargeable battery, roughly four and a half hours on the 280-lumen mid setting is realistic given the size and weight of the unit.
How It Performs on the Run
At 56 grams, this is an incredibly light unit, so much so that it is easy to forget you are wearing it on training runs. Paired with the comfy elasticated, fully adjustable strap, it makes for a very comfortable head torch to run with, and there has been zero movement even when running at speed.
The warm white light option is a genuine highlight. In foggy or sea-misty conditions, that warmer, more penetrating light is invaluable, and it also helps with eye fatigue. On a tough winter race with a long nighttime section where the torch may be on your head for 12, 13, or even 14 hours, having three colour options to flick between gives the eyes a rest. Cool white is bright and refreshing over longer distances, neutral white mimics early morning light, and the warm yellow light offers exceptional penetration, reduces glare and reflections, and makes it easier to pick out undulations in the terrain.

Simplicity is another strength. Two easy-to-reach top buttons make changing settings on the move straightforward, the unit tilts to the angle you need, and there is a lockout feature: hold both top buttons simultaneously for a couple of seconds, the light flashes three times, and the torch is locked off so it cannot be accidentally activated in transport or in a race vest. It is a brilliant feature that gets used all the time.
Value and Buying Advice
It is hard to find a better entry-level head torch that can handle camping, dog walks, and hiking, then perform really well in a running environment, all at this price point. Paired with Nitecore’s rechargeable battery, it becomes a great running option at any ability level, whether as a training light, a backup lamp, or even a primary light source.

One trade-off: it would have been nice to see the rechargeable battery included instead of the three standard AAA batteries. The AAA route keeps the entry-level price low, but some buyers would happily pay a little more for the rechargeable cell out of the box. The brand has indicated it may offer bundle deals in the future where you can choose between the unit with AAA batteries or the unit with a rechargeable battery, which would be a welcome flexibility for the consumer.
Conclusion
The Nitecore HA23 balances light weight, thoughtful features, and a very competitive price. The MCT colour-temperature options, a well-judged mid output of 280 lumens, a genuine 600-lumen max, IP68 waterproofing, and a simple two-button interface make it easy to recommend. If you want one head torch that handles campsite evenings, dog walks, hikes, and serious trail running without breaking the bank, this is an easy pick.
