Life L Writing Paper Pad Review: A Lesser-Known Gem for Fountain Pen Letter Writing
A glue-bound B5 writing pad from Japan's Life stationery brand that handles sheen, shading, and even notorious inks with almost no bleed-through.
Introduction
Fountain pen users tend to gravitate toward the familiar names: Tomoe River, Rhodia, Cosmo Air Light. But there is a whole world of lesser-known papers that deserve attention, and the Life brand L writing paper pad is one of the most pleasant surprises among them. This Japanese pad is built primarily for letter writing, and after extensive testing with sheening inks, shading inks, and even an ink notorious for destroying paper, it held up remarkably well. Here is what you need to know before picking up a pad.
What the Life L Writing Pad Is
Life is a Japanese stationery brand, and the L writing paper is their dedicated letter-writing stock, sold as a glue-bound pad. The format will feel familiar to anyone who has used a Rhodia pad: a cardboard backing and a simple cardstock cover that tells you what is inside. The label lists the color as white, but set it next to a Rhodia pad and the comparison is clear: this is more of a cream-colored paper.

The pad in question is a B5 tab pad, slightly larger than an A5 notebook, which gives you generous space for letters. It contains 70 sheets with horizontal ruling, and the lines appear on one side of the sheet only. Interestingly, the paper carries a watermark of mainly vertical lines with a couple of horizontal ones, which you can spot by holding the sheet up to the light. The glue binding performs exactly as you would hope: pages come off easily and cleanly, with no tearing or ripping at the edge.
Ink Testing: Swabs and Writing Samples
To put the paper through its paces, the testing covered four very different ink styles: a sheening ink (California Teal), a shading ink (Tobacco Sunburst), a basic everyday ink (Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black), and a notoriously paper-unfriendly ink (Noodler’s Bay State Blue). Writing samples were done with a Platinum ultra extra fine nib and a Pilot Custom 74 with a medium nib carrying a brown ink.

The writing experience is the standout quality. This is a very smooth paper; despite the watermark, you cannot feel it at all under the nib. It is not thick or draggy the way Cosmo Air Light can sometimes be, just an easy, pleasant surface. The pen does not catch on anything, there is not much feedback, and it handled both the ultra extra fine and the medium nib well. Lines came out slightly compact rather than spread, suggesting the paper is a little thirsty and soaks up ink, and edges were slightly fuzzy rather than razor sharp, but it never crossed into actual feathering.
The reverse side is where the paper genuinely impresses. Even heavily swabbed Bay State Blue did not come through at all. There is no bleed-through in the writing samples either, and show-through is minimal: you mostly just see the imprint of the strokes and the watermark lines. For a pad at this level, that kind of ink resistance is a real achievement.

Ink behavior on the surface is equally rewarding. The sheening ink showed sheen clearly around the edges of the swab, the shading ink displayed a beautiful tonal range from yellowy brown to darker, murkier shades where the ink pooled, and even the Brilliant Black picked up a subtle black sheen when laid down heavily. The paper flatters whatever quality your ink has, which makes it a great canvas for experimenting with your collection.
Things to Consider Before Buying
This is first and foremost letter-writing paper. If you want something more permanent for journaling, Life’s Noble Note notebook series uses similar good paper in notebook format and may suit you better. Line-lovers should note the ruling is on one side only, though the back remains usable. And if you demand razor-sharp line definition like Tomoe River delivers, the slightly fuzzy edges here may not satisfy you. Drying times were solid, with no smearing issues during normal writing.
Value and Where to Buy
The 70-sheet pad goes for around 14, though it can often be found for less. It is widely available through major online retailers, and smaller 30-sheet versions exist if you want to try it cheaply or in a different size. For a paper with this level of ink performance, the price makes it a genuinely compelling alternative to more expensive staples.

Conclusion
The Life L writing paper pad is a smooth, forgiving, and affordable sheet that shows off sheen and shading beautifully while resisting bleed-through even from the most aggressive inks. If you have been cycling through the usual Tomoe River and Cosmo Air Light rotation and want something different, or you are simply hunting for a cheaper alternative that does not compromise on performance, this pad deserves a spot on your desk. It comes highly recommended for anyone who enjoys putting pen to paper.
