LAMY Accent BR Review: An Elegant Ballpoint With Interchangeable Grips

A discontinued but genuinely premium LAMY ballpoint with a striking ringed grip, quiet click, and a refill surprise that changed how we use it.

Introduction

Some pens earn their keep through looks and feel rather than novelty, and the LAMY Accent BR is a clear example. It is a series design developed with input from Phoenix Design, the studio known for work on home appliances, watches, and medical equipment, and the result is a ballpoint that is simple, elegant, and genuinely striking. The catch: this particular BR variant has been discontinued, so it is much harder to find than the current AL version.

First Impressions and Packaging

Unlike LAMY’s usual blister packaging, the Accent BR arrives in a proper box. A sleeve slides off to reveal a hard cardboard case with a magnetic closure. Inside there is a full instruction manual and warranty card printed entirely in Japanese, plus a small product catalog tucked into the bottom of the box. The presentation immediately signals that this is a higher-end product than the brand’s everyday pens.

Design and the Interchangeable Ring Grip

The defining feature of the Accent series is its interchangeable grip, and this example came fitted with the Ring grip: eight polished silver rings set into the grip section. It looks expensive, and the surface has a slightly adhesive feel against the fingers, so the pen stays put without slipping.

Swapping grips is straightforward. A replacement Brilliant Black lacquer grip is included, and because the mating area on both grips is plastic, the grooves and teeth lock together so the grip will not rotate in use. The grips also fit the discontinued four-color Accent model. One construction detail worth noting: the barrel’s metal is a thin outer layer over a resin core, a double-layer structure. The glossy Brilliant Black lacquer hides fingerprints surprisingly well, the clip is polished stainless steel and sprung, and “Germany” is engraved inside the clip. The knock is stiff but completely silent.

Specs at a Glance

  • Total length: 139 mm
  • Weight: 31 g
  • Maximum barrel diameter: 12 mm
  • Balance point: center
  • Ink refill (included): LAMY M16, medium 1 mm

Writing Performance: M16 Versus Jetstream

Out of the box, the M16 medium refill writes with a firm, hard ink feel. There is a faint rattle while writing, but the character of the line suits the pen, and slight tip wobble noticed when flicking the pen by hand is barely noticeable during actual writing. The ink does skip occasionally.

The surprise came when swapping in a Jetstream 0.7 refill. It is undeniably smooth, gliding across the page with almost no pressure, yet somehow felt underwhelming. For this body, the original M16 simply matched better. It was an unexpected conclusion, and a good reminder that trying things yourself matters.

What We Liked and What to Consider

The strengths are easy to list: the design looks great, the writing feel is satisfying, the centered balance makes the pen feel stable, the glossy finish prevents slipping, the quiet knock is a nice touch, and the interchangeable grip system adds real long-term flexibility. The clip does touch the fingers when writing, but because it is thin, it rarely became distracting. Beyond that, nothing significant bothered us during testing.

The main caveat is availability. The BR is discontinued, and while a few stores still have stock, most retailers carry only the current AL version. If you want the Accent experience without hunting, the AL in silver is a practical alternative that is now widely available for around 7,000 yen, which is excellent value for this design.

Buying Advice

The Accent BR is a premium, elegant ballpoint with high satisfaction to match its high price. If you stumble across remaining BR stock and the ringed grip speaks to you, it is worth picking up precisely because it will not be around much longer. For everyone else, the AL delivers nearly the same experience with none of the supply headache. Whichever you choose, try both the included M16 refill and a smoother alternative like the Jetstream before committing to one. You may be surprised by which one wins.

Conclusion

The LAMY Accent BR turned out to be more than just a pretty pen. Its interchangeable grip, quiet click, and balanced weight make it a pleasure to use, and the unexpected discovery that LAMY’s own M16 refill suits it best only reinforced how well the package holds together. Discontinued or not, it remains a compelling piece of design for anyone who appreciates an elegant, well-balanced everyday pen.
