Kaweco Liliput Ballpoint Pen Review: Tiny, Solid, and Surprisingly Pleasant to Write With
A compact aluminum ballpoint from a historic German pen maker, with a rock-steady D1 refill, a quiet knock mechanism, and a size that will either charm you or catch you off guard.
Introduction
The Kaweco Liliput Ballpoint Pen is one of those products where the first thing you learn about it is the last thing you expect. At just 98mm long, it is dramatically smaller than a standard pen, and the surprise is part of the experience. But small does not mean cheap here. Kaweco, a German pen maker founded in 1883, has built the Liliput from aluminum with the kind of finish you would normally expect from a much larger, much more expensive pen. After using it, the verdict is simple: the quality and the writing feel are excellent, but the format genuinely will not suit everyone.
What Kaweco Is Known For
Kaweco was founded in 1883, was briefly dissolved, and was revived in 1994. The company has released many writing instruments that combine high quality with retro, distinctive design. Kaweco’s best-known current product is arguably the Kaweco Special, a mechanical pencil often simply called “the Special,” but the brand’s fountain pen heritage remains a core part of its identity.
The Liliput arrives in packaging that mirrors the Kaweco Special’s design language, only scaled down: a slim outer sleeve and the familiar gold metal pen case inside. Interestingly, the inner tray has die-cut slots sized for the manual, warranty card, and even the included sticker, a small packaging touch the Special’s case does not have. It is a minor detail, but it signals real care.

At around 700 yen in Japan, and with prices that vary on Amazon, it is also one of the more accessible ways to try Kaweco’s design approach.
Size, Build, and Design
The Liliput’s origin story is part of its appeal. The original design dates back to 1910, and today’s version is built on that era’s styling. The aluminum barrel is split at the body’s center and integrates seamlessly into the metal nose cone, giving the pen a continuous, machined feel from tip to top.
The dimensions tell the story: 98mm long, 9.4g in weight, and 8.5mm in diameter. Compared side by side with a full-size pen like the Kaweco Special, the difference is striking. The Liliput is available in black and silver; our unit is black. Other finishes, such as brass and brass wave versions, sit in a completely different price bracket, so the aluminum models are the entry point into the lineup.

The grip section has no special texture or machining, but the pen is so light that slippage is not a real issue in use. There is no clip fitted by default, more on that below. The knock button carries the printed Kaweco logo on its top, and the mechanism inside is a quiet, soft-action design: there is very little switch-like feel and almost no sound. It is a subtle, almost addictive knock action once you get used to it.
Writing Experience
The included refill is Kaweco’s Solo black ink in 1mm, and it is genuinely good. The 1mm width produces a very smooth, effortless line, and the writing experience feels notably refined for a pen of this size. The standout detail: there is essentially no nib wobble at all. Many ballpoint pens, including expensive ones, show some play at the tip, but the Liliput’s refill sits rock solid. That stability, combined with the smooth 1mm refill, makes it a pleasure to actually use rather than just admire.

Because it uses the standard D1 refill format, you are not locked into Kaweco ink. Swapping in any D1-compatible refill from another brand you prefer is straightforward, which adds real long-term value.
The balance is slightly top-weighted, which suits the short barrel well: your fingers naturally sit close to the nose cone, and the rearward weight keeps the tip planted on the page.
Things to Consider Before Buying
A few practical points are worth knowing before you order. First, the Kaweco logo on the knock button is printed rather than engraved. With long-term use, it will almost certainly wear off. Aged pens can develop character, but a disappearing logo is less appealing, and engraved or stamped branding would have been the better choice.
Second, the clip situation. The Liliput ships without a clip, and one is sold separately. Here is the trap: the Liliput lineup includes both ballpoint and fountain pen variants, and the clip part numbers differ. For the knock-type models like this ballpoint, the correct clip part number is CLPLB. The CLIPlcf is for cap-type models only. Many buyers accidentally order the wrong one even when the listing says it is for the Liliput, so check the part number carefully.
Third, the separately sold clip for the ballpoint is available in a single bronze finish only. Gold or silver options would have been welcome, and it is a shame the choice is limited there.
On the plus side, the compact 98mm length means the Liliput fits neatly into an M5-size planner, making it a strong candidate for anyone hunting for a pen that travels inside their notebook.

Buying Advice
The Liliput is honest about what it is: a very short, very light pocket pen. If you buy it expecting a full-size writing instrument, the size will surprise you, and if you are accustomed to thick, long pens, the transition may take some adjustment. For that reason, it is not a pen we would universally recommend. It suits people who either deliberately want a compact carry pen or are open to adapting to the format.
What is beyond debate is the build quality and the writing feel. The aluminum construction, the wobble-free refill, the smooth 1mm ink, and the quiet knock mechanism all punch well above the price point. Paired with the separately purchased clip, it makes an excellent planner companion, and that is exactly the direction we plan to take it.
Conclusion
The Kaweco Liliput Ballpoint Pen rewards buyers who understand what they are getting: a remarkably compact pen with premium feel, a quiet soft knock, and an impressively stable, smooth writing experience built on a 1910 design. Watch the clip part number, accept that the printed logo may age, and if a pen this small fits your style of use, it is a genuinely satisfying purchase.
