Hydor E-SK DC Protein Skimmers: E-SK 600, 1000, and 1600 Compared

A closer look at Hydor's compact E-SK DC protein skimmer line, including the 600, 1000, and 1600, and which model suits which reef system.

Introduction

Protein skimming has been a staple of saltwater filtration for decades, and reef keepers still rely on foam fractionation to remove waste that mechanical media such as filter floss, sponges, and filter socks simply cannot capture. The category is crowded, and most skimmers within a given price band look and behave much the same.

Hydor’s E-SK line is one of the more interesting recent exceptions. It is a DC-controllable skimmer family with an unusually small footprint and a narrow exterior profile, built around a handful of design decisions that are uncommon at this end of the market. The range covers three models: the E-SK 600, E-SK 1000, and E-SK 1600, rated for roughly 50, 150, and 250 gallons respectively for the way most reefers will run them.

All three arrive fully assembled with a controller and power supply included, and all three share the same maintenance-focused design language.

What Makes the E-SK Line Different

The pump sits inside a wine-bottle-shaped body, a space-saving approach shared by several compact skimmer designs. What sets the E-SK apart is the collar at the top of the body. Both the air silencer and the water-level gate adjustment live inside that collar rather than hanging off the outside, which keeps the profile slim all the way up. In a tight sump compartment, an external riser tube or gate is often the single detail that decides whether a skimmer fits at all, so eliminating it is a meaningful change.

Setup is correspondingly simple. The skimmer arrives assembled, and the only work required is fitting the silicone feet to the base, plugging the pump into the controller, and plugging the controller into the wall.

Control is split across two points, as you would expect from a DC skimmer. The gate raises and lowers the water level inside the body, while the DC pump lets you adjust pump speed and the air-to-water ratio to dial in foam production.

Hydor E-SK 600

The E-SK 600 is the smallest model in the line, rated for roughly 50 gallons for most reefers. It uses the same compact body, hidden air silencer, internal gate, and collection cup as the larger models, so it does not feel like a stripped-down version of its siblings.

One difference is worth noting. The stacked double diffuser plate design that helps limit micro bubbles appears on the two larger models, so the E-SK 600 relies on the standard single diffuser arrangement.

For a smaller system where sump space is genuinely tight, the 600 keeps the same external profile advantages as the rest of the range while matching a lower water volume.

Hydor E-SK 1000

The E-SK 1000 sits in the middle of the range, rated for roughly 150 gallons for the way most reefers will use it. Like the E-SK 1600, it adds stacked double diffuser plates above the pump.

That stacked design is aimed at reducing the chance of micro bubbles escaping the skimmer. The practical benefit runs two ways: more useful bubbles stay inside the body producing foam, and fewer stray bubbles reach the sump, where they can collect on equipment, get drawn into pumps, or interfere with probes.

With a rating of roughly 150 gallons, the E-SK 1000 covers the broadest band of mid-sized reef systems in this lineup. If your tank sits somewhere between the smaller and larger models, this is the natural starting point.

Hydor E-SK 1600

The E-SK 1600 is the largest model, rated for approximately 250 gallons. It carries over the same compact body and hidden-collar layout as the rest of the line, along with the stacked double diffuser plate design.

That combination matters most on larger systems, where water volume and flow make it harder to keep foam stable and where micro bubbles in the sump are more likely to find their way into pumps and probes.

For high-volume reef tanks that still have to work within a confined equipment compartment, the 1600 keeps the same space-saving exterior profile as its smaller siblings while matching a much larger system.

Maintenance and Everyday Ownership

Hydor has put clear effort into making these skimmers easier to live with. The collection cup includes a drain line fitted with a valve at the end. If you prefer to skim on the wetter side, you can drop the line into a bucket and open the valve to empty the cup without lifting it off at all.

When the cup does need a proper clean, a small handle makes it comfortable to lift and carry to the sink. The internal neck of the cup is removable as well, a feature usually reserved for higher-end skimmers, and it makes getting a sponge into what is normally a tight space far easier.

The body attaches to the base with four large thumb screws and separates for cleaning. The DC pump adds a five-minute feed timer and six levels of pump speed adjustment, along with an automatic 80-second startup delay. That delay prevents the skimmer from overflowing after a power outage or maintenance by letting the sump water level settle before the pump restarts. The controller also stores its settings and returns to the last one once power is restored, so you can plug everything back in after a water change and let the skimmer come on when it is safe to do so.

Buying Advice: Which E-SK Model Fits Your Tank

The three models are separated mainly by rated water volume. The E-SK 600 is rated for roughly 50 gallons, the E-SK 1000 for roughly 150 gallons, and the E-SK 1600 for approximately 250 gallons, based on how most reefers will run them. Matching the model to your system size is the first decision, and the second is confirming that the compact footprint suits your sump layout, which is where the hidden air silencer and internal gate do most of their work.

Beyond size, the differences are small. All three ship fully assembled with a controller and power supply, all three use the same two-point control scheme, and all three share the drain-line valve, removable cup neck, thumb-screw body, feed timer, and startup delay. The stacked double diffuser plates are the one feature limited to the two larger models, which makes them the better fit for larger systems where micro bubbles are harder to manage.

If you are upgrading from a bulky skimmer that barely fits your compartment, the narrow exterior profile is likely to be the most noticeable change. If you are simply replacing a skimmer of similar rating, the maintenance touches, particularly the drain line and the removable cup neck, are the ones you will appreciate week after week.

Conclusion

The Hydor E-SK line is a well-considered take on the DC protein skimmer. The compact footprint, hidden air silencer, internal gate, and fully assembled delivery address the practical annoyances that come with fitting and dialing in a skimmer, while the cup drain valve, removable neck, and startup delay make routine ownership noticeably easier. Match the model to your water volume, confirm it fits your sump, and the rest of the setup is about as straightforward as skimming gets.
