Introduction

Insulated jackets are one of those pieces of kit where the price range seems almost absurd. Some cost the best part of £300, others a fraction of that, and it is not always obvious what you are actually paying for. The new Lman Insulated Jacket from Harrier sits firmly at the affordable end of that spectrum at £78 in the UK, and after a couple of weeks of testing in cold and windy conditions, it has made a genuinely strong case for itself.

About the Harrier Brand

Harrier was founded in the UK back in 2020 by Kate Parker, a passionate trail runner who wanted to offer fellow runners a different option: great value for money, thoughtful design, and solid build quality and customer service. The brand started out with soft flasks and first aid kits and has since grown an extensive range of affordable trail running essentials, including hydration vests, running poles and waterproof trousers. The Lman jacket is the latest addition to that lineup, and the brand has recently been recognised too, winning Retailer of the Year at the National Running Show.

Key Features

The Lman is designed as a lightweight insulating layer for colder days. The outer is a polyester shell treated with a water repellent finish, so light showers will bead off the surface. It is not waterproof, though, with no taped seams, so it will not hold up to heavy or prolonged rain.

Inside, the insulation is 3M Flowable Featherless Thinsulate. It is designed to be a kinder, animal-friendly alternative to feathers, mimicking the warmth of natural down in the dry while offering more warmth than down if the jacket gets wet. It is also made from 80% recycled material, giving it a smaller carbon footprint than many other insulations, and it is bluesign approved.

Other practical touches include two good-sized zipped hand warmer pockets, a double toggle adjustment system on the hem for added protection, and a cosy hood with a sturdy built-in peak to keep rain out of your eyes. The hood also uses a double toggle system, so you can cinch it in tight around your face so it moves with you when you turn your head. A favourite detail: tucked inside the left pocket is a small stuff sack, so you can compress the jacket into its own bag for travel or packing into a rucksack.

Fit and Sizing

At 6’1” and around 77 to 80 kilos, a men’s medium fit really nicely. It feels tapered at the body with an athletic cut, and the sleeve length is spot on. The internal elasticated cuffs seal off the sleeves well and help block out the elements.

How It Performed

The 3M Flowable insulation delivers a genuinely good level of warmth. Worn out walking on a couple of very windy, cold days, it kept things toasty throughout. As a walking or hiking layer, the system works really well.

For running, it is a different story. It would have to be very cold indeed to run in this jacket, and running in it would likely mean overheating quickly. As a walking, hiking, dog-walking or everyday cold-weather layer, though, it performs very well.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The standout strengths, especially at this price, are the quality zips on the two front pockets, the functional hood with its peak and adjustment, and the built-in stuff sack. Set against a much more expensive insulated down jacket that retails for around £300 but lacks any hood at all, the value comparison is hard to ignore.

Be aware of the limits: this is not a waterproof jacket, and it is warmer than most runners will need unless conditions are genuinely bitter.

Buying Advice

If you are after a cold-weather jacket for hiking, walking the dog, or simply as a practical daily layer, this is an easy recommendation at £78. For anyone comparing insulated jackets at very different price points, it is worth asking whether the extra features of a premium jacket justify the premium, and in this case the gap looks hard to defend on pure performance.

Conclusion

Great build quality, thoughtful materials, nice attention to detail and reliable warmth make the Lman Insulated Jacket an impressive package for the money. It is a well-priced, well-made addition to Harrier’s growing range, and it would be difficult to find a better jacket at this price point.
