GORDIX CNC Review: A Portable, Hands-Free CNC for Non-CNC People

The GORDIX CNC is a portable, rail-free CNC that can cut a full sheet of plywood. We tested routing, laser engraving, and pen plotting to see if it lives up to the hype.

CNC machines have traditionally meant big, heavy, and expensive equipment bolted to a workshop floor. The GORDIX CNC takes a completely different approach. It is portable, fits in a box the size of a small suitcase, and uses no rails at all. Instead, it anchors itself to your workpiece with four retractable belts and cuts using a standard router.

This machine was sent as a pre-production model ahead of a Kickstarter launch. The production version may differ slightly, and final pricing was not confirmed at the time of testing. What is clear from hands-on use is that this is a genuinely different kind of CNC, one that seems designed for people who have never owned one before.

What Is the GORDIX CNC?

The GORDIX CNC is a compact, self-contained CNC machine that can cut workpieces up to four feet by eight feet, the size of a full sheet of plywood. For testing, the work area was cut down to 30 inches by 48 inches to make the demonstration more manageable.

The machine operates by attaching four corner brackets to your workpiece. Each corner has a post, and the machine shoots out four belts that connect to those posts. The belts self-tighten, and the machine uses the tension to hold itself steady while it cuts.

Setup starts with measuring your table. The kit includes small plastic pieces that fit over each corner post. You measure the distance between corners on all four sides, plus one diagonal. These measurements go into a table configurator in the machine’s software. The software corrects for any imperfections in your board, so you do not need perfectly square corners. Even if you enter a deliberately wrong measurement, the software adjusts and shows a parallelogram, proving it compensates for table errors.

You can save multiple table configurations, so the machine remembers different setups. A micro SD card holds the config file and the cutting files. Once the machine is attached and the router is installed, you set the depth, turn on the router, and press play.

Routing Performance

The first test was cutting a wine rack from plywood. The workpiece was taped and screwed down, with screws driven below the surface. Nylon spacers were added to the corner posts to bring the machine to the correct height above the workpiece.

The cutting process took multiple passes, four in total, to reach full depth. What impressed most was the accuracy of the belt system. The layer lines between passes were invisible to the naked eye, which is remarkable for a machine with no rigid rails.

After cutting, the diameter of a circle in the piece measured 31.7 millimeters against a target of 31.75 millimeters. That level of accuracy, within a fraction of a millimeter, is genuinely impressive for a portable system.

The main trade-off is speed. A traditional CNC with rigid rails can cut faster and handle repeatable jig setups. The GORDIX trades that speed and rigidity for portability and convenience. For smaller pieces, you need to build up the sides with scrap plywood so the workpiece does not fall off the edge. The recommended trick is to mill solid hardwood down to the same thickness as your plywood, then surround it with scrap pieces for an even base.

Laser Engraving

The router module can be swapped for a laser module. The laser includes a small air assist hose that blows air on the engraving point to prevent flaming and ensure a clean cut.

The software lets you set movement speed, laser power, and the number of passes. More passes produce deeper and darker engraving. For the test, a single pass at 80 percent power engraved a logo onto a piece of cherry wood.

This is not an enclosed laser, so proper ventilation is required. One clever use case is creating stencils: laser-cut shapes into masking tape applied to a surface, peel away the inner pieces, and spray paint through the mask. The laser produces a high-quality mask with minimal effort.

Pen Plotting

The third major feature is pen plotting. The router is removed, and a pen module is installed. The pen has a spring mechanism to control pressure against the surface. A file is loaded, and the machine draws the design automatically.

The pen plotting output was clean and accurate, producing detailed line art without any smudging or skipped sections. This feature makes the machine useful for drawing, calligraphy, and design work, not just cutting and engraving.

Combined Project: Pushing the Limits

To test all capabilities together, a single art piece was created on bamboo plywood. The project combined four operations: 3D carving with a V-bit, laser engraving, pen plotting, and a 2D profile cut.

The 3D carving worked as expected. As the bit goes deeper into the material, it cuts deeper lines, and as it rises to the surface, it produces thin lines. This opens up a wide range of design possibilities.

The laser engraved a long, continuous jagged line across the bamboo. Then a pen tool traced over the laser engraving in a different color, creating a two-tone effect. Finally, a 2D profile path cut out the jagged shape. Each pass landed exactly where it should, with no visible drift between passes.

Software Flexibility

One of the strongest points of the GORDIX CNC is that it is not locked into proprietary software. It accepts standard g-code, so you can generate tool paths in any software that outputs g-code. Fusion 360’s free version works, as do various web-based tools.

For non-software people, there is an even simpler path. An SVG image can be uploaded to an AI assistant along with an example g-code file, and the assistant can generate the tool paths automatically. This worked flawlessly in testing, with no custom software or 3D modeling required.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The GORDIX CNC is not a replacement for a traditional CNC. It trades speed and rigidity for portability. If you need to cut large quantities of identical parts with repeatable jigs, a traditional machine is still the better choice.

Smaller workpieces require extra setup. You need to build up the sides so the piece does not fall off the edge. This adds a few minutes to each job but is not difficult once you understand the technique.

The laser module requires proper ventilation since it is not enclosed. This is a safety consideration, not a dealbreaker, but it is worth planning for.

Pricing was not confirmed at the time of testing, but the machine is expected to cost significantly less than a traditional CNC of comparable capability.

Buying Advice

The GORDIX CNC is best suited for hobbyists, makers, and small workshop owners who want CNC capability without dedicating permanent floor space to a machine. It is also ideal for anyone who wants to try CNC work for the first time without a large investment.

If you already own a traditional CNC and need high-speed production, this is not the machine for you. But if you value portability, ease of use, and the ability to put your CNC on a shelf when you are done, the GORDIX CNC is a compelling option.

The Kickstarter campaign was scheduled to launch in May, with a super early bird list available for those who want the best price. Given the accuracy demonstrated in testing, this is a machine worth watching.
