However, when soldering thicker wires or surfaces with large conductive pads, the wire acts like a heat sink and absorbs heat quickly. The temperature on the display drops during these tasks, and the tool takes a moment to recover once the tip is lifted.

Real-World Soldering Performance

In practical testing, the HS-03 handled a variety of tasks. Soldering two 20-gauge wires together was straightforward, and the joint came out clean. A ring terminal with a 16-gauge wire also soldered well.

When soldering two 14-gauge wires together at the maximum temperature of 450 degrees Celsius, the temperature drop was noticeable. The larger conductor absorbed heat faster than the 10 W iron could replenish. Once the tip was removed from the wire, the temperature climbed back to the target value.

This behavior is not a flaw in the tool itself, but it is a limitation to understand. For larger conductors, a higher-wattage soldering station will hold temperature more consistently. The HS-03 is best suited for smaller gauge wires and component-level work.

Component-Level Work

The HS-03 performs well on circuit boards. In testing, it successfully desoldered an LED from a simple circuit board at 370 degrees Celsius and soldered it back on without issue. The fine pointed tips make it easy to work on small components like surface-mount devices.

The included three tips cover different needs. One tip has a very sharp point for small components. Another has an angled sharp point, also suited for small parts. The third tip has a larger surface area, which is useful for soldering wires during vehicle installs.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The HS-03 has a few design points to keep in mind. The cylindrical body has no flat spot at the bottom, so it can roll around when placed on a surface. You will need to set it down carefully or use the cap to keep it stable.

The tip gets very hot, so you need to be mindful of where it is placed, especially when working inside a vehicle. Accidental contact with wires or panels could cause melting damage.
