Fosi has built a reputation for packing serious performance into small aluminum boxes at accessible prices. The C3 and K7 are two of their most talked-about desktop DAC amps, and while they share a similar footprint and build philosophy, they target different kinds of users. The C3 puts gaming front and center with features like simulated surround and an in-house footstep enhancement mode. The K7 leans audiophile-first, with more power, balanced output, and Bluetooth. Both punch well above their price points, but choosing between them comes down to what you prioritize.

Fosi C3: Gaming First

The C3 is a remarkably compact device. It measures roughly 3.7 by 3.7 inches and sits only 1.7 inches off the desk at its highest point. The chassis is full aluminum, which gives it a premium feel that belies its $129.99 price. It is completely driverless and bus powered over USB-C, so there is no separate power brick to manage. Front-facing 3.5mm inputs handle your headset and mic, while the rear offers optical and coaxial inputs plus RCA outputs for powered desktop speakers.

The top surface has a 5-degree angle for ergonomics, and control is handled by two sliders, one for volume and one for mic. These feel solid, with no noise in the headphones when adjusting, and they operate independently of the Windows system volume. The button layout is simple enough that you can reach over and make adjustments without looking. There is no software to install, but a web-based config handles the EQ. It is an 8-band EQ rather than a true parametric EQ, since you do not get access to specific frequencies or Q values. Traditional gaming EQ presets are included, along with two custom slots.

Three audio modes shape the sound: PEQ, simulated 7.1 surround, and Step Sense. You can have one active at a time, or turn them all off for bypass mode. Simulated 7.1 operates at the hardware level and can help with directional positioning in FPS games, though it can make some sounds come in hotter than others. Step Sense is an in-house algorithm trained on games like CS:GO, PUBG, Delta Force, and Valorant. Fosi claims it enhances footsteps by 3 to 9 dB without increasing overall loudness. Testing in a PUBG lobby confirmed the effect: footsteps were noticeably louder in Step Sense mode compared to the PUBG EQ preset, and the audio did not sound weird or off. It does add 10ms of processing latency, and it only works on games that are currently optimized for it. For everything else, the preset EQ modes are the better choice.

The C3 also includes a UAC toggle. UAC 1.0 is the full-featured mode, with mic input, simulated surround, and Step Sense, limited to 24-bit, 48kHz output. UAC 2.0 is the high-quality output mode, with no mic functions or surround, but support for 24 and 32-bit output options and DSD files with a separate Windows driver. The DAC is a Cirrus Logic CS43131, with dual TPA6120s for clock management and an XMOS 16-core chip for processing. In real-world listening, it sounds much better than expected from a combined DAC amp at this price. Power tops out at 320mW at 32 ohms per channel, which is enough for basically all IEMs, any gaming headset, and a fair amount of audiophile headphones. Sensitive IEMs run clean with no background hiss, and moderately difficult headphones like the DT 1990 Pro are handled well at around 75% volume. The sound is clean, clear, and fairly neutral, which is exactly what you want for gaming.

The mic input is also clean, with no background noise or hiss. The mic slider operates independently of Windows volume, and the mic button mutes on tap and activates side tone on long press. Side tone volume is tied to the slider value, and it sounds good with zero latency. A switch on the back enables AI voice noise cancellation. It is low latency but not zero latency, and it does an impressive job of filtering out background noise like a loud mechanical keyboard. It also helps prevent game audio from bleeding into the mic when using open-back headphones. The trade-off is that your voice sounds more processed with it on, and the added latency can make side tone distracting. You will be choosing between zero-latency side tone or background noise rejection.

Console support is solid. The C3 works with the Switch and PS5, with the mic functioning as expected. Just avoid the 7.1 mode on PS5. There is no support on Xbox, since Xbox does not support generic USB devices, though an HDMI audio extractor over optical would work. The only build complaint is that the buttons feel a little rattly. The sliders feel great, but the buttons could be tighter. Missing features include hardware game chat mix, Bluetooth, balanced output, and enough power for the most demanding headphones. Three of those are unrealistic at this price, and the web app is a better trade-off than full-time software for game chat mix.

Fosi K7: Audiophile First

The K7 shares the same physical inputs as the C3 but adds a 4.4mm balanced output and is a fully balanced design. It also adds Bluetooth with a long list of codec support and latency under 40ms. The DAC moves to an AKM chip, and a separate chip handles power output. Unlike the C3, the K7 requires an AC adapter because it outputs significantly more power: 1,000mW at 32 ohms over single-ended and 2,300mW over balanced. That means it can handle almost any headphone you throw at it.

The K7 has the same UAC 1.0 and 2.0 functionality as the C3, the same console support, and also lacks game chat mix. The build is impressive, with a small footprint and buttons that feel better than the C3’s. A small LCD screen on the front face handles settings navigation. However, the newer C3 has some features the K7 does not: no simulated 7.1 surround, no mic side tone, no AI mic noise cancellation, no Step Sense mode, and no software or web drivers. Instead, the K7 uses knobs to adjust bass and treble levels, which becomes a single EQ mode you can toggle on or bypass. It is a quick and easy EQ, and you can still use third-party PC-based EQ software.

In terms of sound quality, the difference between the two is not as large as you might expect unless you are running demanding headphones. The AKM DAC sounds a little warmer and smoother than the Cirrus Logic chip in the C3. The extra power from the balanced output unlocks the ability to drive higher-end headphones better. The K7 is best thought of as audiophile-first with a minor in gaming, while the C3 puts gaming front and center and backs off on audiophile support. If you are running IEMs, a gaming headset, or easy-to-drive headphones, the two sound very similar. Unless you specifically need balanced output or Bluetooth, the C3 is the better option for gaming-focused use. The sliders on the C3 are also faster to adjust than the K7’s knobs. The RCA outputs on both units let you route features to a more powerful standalone headphone amp if needed.

Overall Buying Advice

Both units are easy recommendations for different types of gaming audio consumers. The C3 at $129.99 is extremely impressive for what it packs into a tiny aluminum chassis: clean sound, a functional footstep enhancement mode, a solid mic input with AI noise cancellation, and console support. It is the better choice for gamers who want a feature-rich, driverless device that just works. The K7 is the better choice for those who need more power, balanced output, or Bluetooth, and who are willing to give up the gaming-specific features for a warmer, smoother sound. If you are running easy-to-drive headphones, the C3 makes more sense. If you have demanding headphones or want the flexibility of balanced and wireless, the K7 is worth the step up.

Fosi has delivered two genuinely impressive desktop DAC amps that each serve a clear purpose. The C3 is a gaming-first device with surprising performance and a very accessible price. The K7 is an audiophile-first alternative with more power and connectivity.
