EcoTech Radion G6 vs G5: Which Reef Light Is Right for Your Tank?
A practical look at the Radion G6 Pro, G6 Blue, G5 Pro, and G5 Blue, covering the spectrum changes, HEI2 optics, mounting height, and the upgrade path between generations.
Introduction
Reef keepers weighing up the Radion Gen 6 line tend to arrive with the same handful of questions: how much is genuinely new compared with the Gen 5, whether existing mounts still fit, and whether the Pro or the Blue spectrum suits the tank in front of them. This guide works through the four fixtures that matter most in that decision, the EcoTech Radion G6 Pro and G6 Blue, and the previous-generation G5 Pro and G5 Blue.
The short answer is that the Gen 6 generation brings two meaningful changes, HEI2 optics and a revised spectrum. Everything else, including the housing, the active cooling, and app-based control, carries over from the generation before it.
What Changed From G5 to G6
The spectrum changes apply to both the Pro and the Blue. Both now offer more blues and broader coverage in the violet range, and both use a new 395 nanometer near-UV diode that adds fluorescence in fish and corals.
On the Pro fixtures, the balance shifts toward more warm white diodes, with a reduced number of cool white diodes in favor of extra blues. On the Blue fixtures, some of the teal and green output has been removed so the emphasis sits more squarely on blue and violet for a true actinic look.
Optics are the second upgrade. HEI2 combines new primary optics on the LEDs themselves with newer HEI secondary lenses, and the result is a noticeably more even spread of PAR. The Gen 6 beam angle measures 126 degrees, up from 110 degrees on the Gen 5, so coverage widens from the same pendant position. The spread is close to what a T5 setup delivers, which is unusual for a pendant-style fixture.

Beyond the diodes and the optics, the two generations are virtually the same light. Active cooling is unchanged, and wireless control still runs through the Mobius app.
EcoTech Radion G6 Pro
The G6 Pro is the fixture for a whiter, full-spectrum presentation. It keeps the new 395 nanometer diodes and the same count of violet and UV diodes as the Blue, so choosing the Pro does not mean giving up the violet end of the spectrum.
Its appeal is balance. It is intended to support coral fluorescence while still bringing out the natural, non-fluorescent pigments in corals, fish, and invertebrates.
EcoTech Radion G6 Blue
The G6 Blue is built around a bluer look. It suits reef keepers who like the AB+ profile, want to emphasize coral coloration and fluorescence, and plan to run the channels close to 100 percent intensity.

Because the Pro and the Blue share the same 395 nanometer diodes and the same violet and UV diode count, the decision is really about how the tank looks at full output rather than about losing part of the spectrum. It is also entirely possible to run an AB+ style spectrum on the Pro, or to turn the blues down on a Blue fixture, if you want to nudge the appearance the other way.
EcoTech Radion G5 Pro
The G5 Pro remains a capable fixture. It has grown, and continues to grow, healthy and good-looking corals in aquaculture settings and home aquariums alike, and it shares its body, active cooling, and Mobius control with the newer generation. What it does not include relative to the Gen 6 is the HEI2 optics, the revised diode mix, and the wider 126 degree beam angle.
EcoTech Radion G5 Blue
The G5 Blue follows the same logic with a blue-forward spectrum and the 110 degree beam angle of the previous generation. If a G5 Blue is already running over your reef, that light is still doing its job well.

The more interesting angle for existing owners is the upgrade kit. Because the kits are cross-compatible, a G5 Pro owner who wishes they had chosen the Blue can switch the LED board during the upgrade, and the same applies in reverse for a Blue owner who wants the Pro.
Mounting, Fit, and the Upgrade Path
Mounting is one of the simplest parts of this decision. The Gen 6 fixtures share the same body as the Gen 5, so every existing RMS mounting option, hanging kit, and rail system fits the new lights without modification. Whether you already own mounts or are buying one alongside a new fixture, the current RMS hardware is compatible.
The recommended mounting height sits right around 9 inches above the water surface, the same target as the Gen 5. RMS mounts are designed to land at that height, which takes most of the guesswork out of installation.
For owners of an existing Radion G5, upgrade kits are available with the components needed to transform a G5 into a G6. That is a practical route for anyone who wants the newer optics and spectrum without replacing whole fixtures.
Which Fixture Is Right for Your Tank
Start with the look you want at full intensity. If you prefer a bluer reef tank, enjoy the AB+ profile, and intend to run your lights close to 100 percent, the Blue fixtures are the straightforward pick. If you prefer a whiter, full-spectrum appearance and want a balance between coral fluorescence and the natural pigmentation of corals, fish, and invertebrates, the Pro fixtures are the better match.

Then consider whether a change is needed at all. A Gen 5 over a healthy reef is still a strong light. Moving to a Gen 6 makes the most sense if you want the latest optics, an even smoother spread of PAR, and as much fluorescence and color pop as the fixture can deliver. Because the upgrade kits are cross-compatible, the change is also a good opportunity to move from a Pro to a Blue, or the other way around.
Conclusion
Four fixtures, two clear decisions. Choose Pro or Blue based on the appearance you want when the channels are running at full output, since both Gen 6 options carry the same violet and UV diode complement. Then decide whether the HEI2 optics, the wider beam angle, and the revised spectrum justify a move from a Gen 5 that is already performing well, or whether an upgrade kit is the more sensible route.
