Introduction

If you spend any real time working under a hood, a good hood light changes the whole experience. The DeWalt DCL045B is a cordless LED hood light built for DeWalt battery users, and it packs a lot of practical thinking into a simple idea: hang a bright, wide light over the engine bay and get on with the job.

What the DeWalt DCL045B Does

The DCL045B runs on DeWalt’s 12V or 20V battery platform, which means you can use any battery from a 2.5Ah pack up to the larger batteries, including FlexVolt packs. That flexibility is a big deal if you are already invested in either lineup. On the light side, you get 1,700 lumens on high and 800 lumens on low.

The whole unit weighs 6.75 pounds, and with a big battery installed you can realistically expect all-day runtime. You can go to lunch, leave it running, and come back to find it still lighting the way.

Pivoting Hooks and Fit

The light uses rubber pivoting hooks so it does not damage the work surface when you put it on or take it off a hood. In its non-extended state it measures roughly 51 inches, and it extends up to 74 inches.

One caveat worth knowing before you buy: hood lights with this kind of clamping system can grab the hood and, on some cars, leave a small mark. If you work on higher-end or particularly cherished vehicles, putting a towel over the contact area is a sensible precaution. For older cars, trucks, and general shop work, this is not something most people will ever think about.

Foldable Design and Stand Use

The single arm is foldable, so you can reposition the light or fold it down for storage. That makes it genuinely compact for mobile mechanics who toss everything in a van.

Beyond storage, the foldable hinge opens up another trick: you can snap it together and run just one side, which turns it into a much smaller light you can set on the floor or aim at a wheel you are working on. The individual lights can be switched on and off separately, so you only light the area you actually need. The arms also rotate, so you can angle the light upward or downward depending on the job.

The foldable hinge does have a trade-off. Some users find the middle flexes a bit when the light is fully extended on a hood, making it hang slightly less sturdy than a one-piece design would. The base can also feel a little wobbly when the light is used as a floor stand, though it still stands up fine. A rigid, full-length LED bar might have been nicer for stability, but the flexibility earns its place by enabling the compact, one-sided use case.

Who Should Buy It

Compared with a headlamp, the main advantage is that you are not blinding everyone every time you look at them, and the light illuminates the entire engine bay at once rather than just wherever you happen to be looking.

The DCL045B sells as a bare tool for about $179, which is a reasonable price given the runtime and the flexibility of running it off 12V, 20V, or FlexVolt batteries. DeWalt has a reputation for releasing tools that work rather than tools that break and get replaced by the next generation, and this light fits that reputation. If you are already using DeWalt cordless tools, it makes perfect sense to add this light to the kit.

Conclusion

The DeWalt DCL045B is a strong hood light for anyone on the DeWalt battery platform. Bright output, long runtime, individual light control, and a foldable design make it a no-brainer for shop and truck work, with the only real caveat being the clamping-style hooks on delicate paint. For most users, that is a small price for a lot of light.
