Introduction

Refugium lighting is often overlooked, but it plays a critical role in the health of your chaeto and the overall nutrient export of your system. The right light can mean the difference between a thriving refugium and one that just limps along. We tested 11 different refugium lighting options to find out which ones deliver the best PAR, spread, and value.

Our goal was simple: give you real data to make an informed decision. We measured mounting height, PAR output, spread across a two-foot by two-foot area, and cost per PAR. Whether you have a tiny sump or a massive trough, there is a light here that fits.

How We Tested

We used a standard 36-point testing grid covering roughly a 2-foot by 2-foot area. Each light was mounted six inches above the PAR meter initially, then raised until we reached a 15% loss in PAR due to spillage outside the target area. This established an optimal mounting height for each fixture.

Because chaeto typically floats near the water surface where PAR is highest, we tested in air to simulate the most demanding scenario. This method lets us compare how evenly each light distributes its output and how much usable light reaches the edges of the refugium.

Innovative Marine ChaetoMax

The ChaetoMax is a low-wattage option that produced one of the softest hotspots in our center measurements at just 61 PAR. It is best suited for very small refugium areas, roughly eight to ten inches across. If you have a nano sump or a compact refugium, this light can get the job done without overkill.

Neptune GRO

The Neptune GRO also falls into the low-wattage group, with a center hotspot of 113 PAR. Like the ChaetoMax, it works well for small refugium spaces where a gentle, even light is sufficient. It is a budget-friendly choice for keeping chaeto healthy in a modest setup.

Kessil H80

The Kessil H80 delivered a center hotspot of 117 PAR, placing it in the same low-wattage category as the ChaetoMax and Neptune GRO. It is a compact fixture that suits small refugiums and offers a simple mounting solution. For growers with limited space, it provides a reliable baseline.

Tunze 10K LED

The Tunze 10K LED was one of the most economical options in our cost-per-PAR analysis. It is recommended for small refugiums of eight to ten inches or less, where its modest output is more than adequate. If you are budget-conscious and have a small area to light, this is a strong contender.

Kessil H160

The Kessil H160 sits in the middle of the lineup, offering more output than the H80 without the extreme size of the H1200. While it did not produce standout hotspot numbers in our testing, it remains a solid choice for medium-sized refugiums that need a balance of power and footprint.

AI Prime Freshwater

The AI Prime Freshwater is a compact LED fixture that shares the familiar AI Prime form factor. It is a versatile option for refugiums where you want a clean, low-profile light. It performed within the expected range for its class and is worth considering for smaller to medium setups.

AI Prime Fuge

The AI Prime Fuge, rated at 46 watts, surprised us by landing in the top five for highest PAR output, behind only the H1200 and XR30 Freshwater. It also ranked among the five lowest cost-per-PAR options, making it an excellent value. For medium refugiums, this light punches well above its weight.

Compact LED refugium light mounted over sump

With its compact size and strong output, the AI Prime Fuge is a great fit for aquarists who want effective chaeto growth without overspending. It delivers reliable performance in a package that is easy to mount and adjust.

A360 Fuge Light

The A360 Fuge Light is a modular fixture that can be used individually or as part of a larger array. In our testing, it provided a solid middle-ground performance. It is a good fit for medium refugiums where you want flexibility and reliable output without going to a massive fixture.

XR15 Freshwater

The XR15 Freshwater is a compact, premium LED that brings strong build quality and consistent performance. It is well-suited for medium refugiums and offers the kind of spread and intensity that keep chaeto growing steadily. For those who want a high-quality light in a smaller package, this is a top pick.

XR30 Freshwater

The XR30 Freshwater was one of the top performers in our hotspot tests, second only to the H1200. It also ranked among the five lowest cost-per-PAR options despite a higher upfront price. If you have a larger refugium and want excellent output with good long-term value, the XR30 is a compelling choice.

Kessil H1200

The Kessil H1200 is the undisputed powerhouse of this group. It produced the highest hotspot at 1465 PAR and had the most even spread, from 1465 in the center to 500 at the outer ring. It requires a mounting height of 25 inches, which is significantly higher than any other light here. This light is best reserved for very large troughs or extremely large refugiums where its massive output can be fully utilized. Despite the high upfront cost, it offers one of the lowest costs per PAR.

Overall Buying Advice

Choosing the right refugium light comes down to matching the fixture to your refugium size and goals. If you have a small refugium (8 to 10 inches), the lower-wattage options like the ChaetoMax, Neptune GRO, H80, or Tunze 10K are more than sufficient. For medium refugiums, the AI Prime Fuge, Kessil H160, or A360 Fuge Light offer a good balance of performance and price. If you have a large trough or want maximum growth, the H1200, XR30, or XR15 Freshwater are your best bets.

Large refugium trough with multiple LED fixtures

Keep in mind that cost per PAR is only one metric. Spread and mounting height also matter, especially if your refugium has a unique shape. Consider your available space above the sump and how evenly you need light distributed. Our data shows that even some budget-friendly lights can deliver excellent value when matched to the right application.

Conclusion

There is no single best refugium light for everyone. The right choice depends on your refugium dimensions, your budget, and how much PAR you actually need. We hope this data helps you make a more confident decision. Stay tuned for more testing on spectrum and chaeto growth, but for now, these 11 options cover a wide range of needs and price points.
