Five daily trainers that stood out over a full year of testing, plus the popular models that just missed the cut.

Introduction

Daily trainers are the unsung heroes of any running rotation. They are the shoes you reach for on ordinary days, the ones that absorb the bulk of your mileage, and the ones that quietly decide how much you enjoy the sport. After a full year of testing a wide range of models, a clear top five emerged, along with a few popular shoes that, for various reasons, did not make the cut.

The theme of 2025 was clear: superfoams that once lived only in race day shoes are now appearing in affordable daily models, and that shift has genuinely raised the bar. Here is how the year shook out.

Shoes That Just Missed the Cut

Before the top five, a few notable names fell short. The Brooks Ghost Max 3 offers a pleasant 40 mm cushioned ride, but at nearly 350 g in a UK 11 it simply feels too hefty for a daily shoe, and other models in the Brooks line end up getting more wear. The Saucony Triumph 23, despite a lighter build than last year’s version and Power PB foam in the midsole, carries a 10 mm drop that feels overly aggressive for everyday use.

The Adidas Evo SL 80R looks similar to the standard Evo SL on paper, but the lugs on its outsole compress into the foam and create an unstable ride that caused genuine knee discomfort. It is best reserved for casual wear or muddy winter days when a bit of extra grip is welcome. Finally, the Brooks Ghost 17 is a decent and noticeably lighter option, but its DNA LOFT foam, while durable, does not match the softer feel of newer compounds like Lightstrike Pro or Puma’s Nitro foam.

5. Saucony Huracane 25

The Saucony Huracane 25 takes fifth place, and it is a shoe that clearly outperforms its more expensive sibling, the Triumph 23. It shares the Power PB foam, but a surrounding carrier foam gives it a noticeably softer and more forgiving ride. Landing on the midfoot and forefoot feels easier, and the shoe never dictates your stride the way firmer daily trainers can.

With a comfortable fit, generous cushioning, and impressive durability across daily miles, the Huracane 25 is a genuinely usable daily shoe that rewards runners who want softness without an aggressive rocker feeling.

4. ASICS GT-2000 14

The ASICS GT-2000 14 is one of the most underrated daily shoes of the year. At around 314 g in a UK 11, the weight hits a sweet spot for a daily trainer, avoiding the clunky feel of heavier 340 to 350 g alternatives. The subtle stability elements along the medial side support the foot without interfering with a natural gait.

Standout qualities include top-tier outsole grip and the interesting use of FF Blast Max foam, the same compound found in the Novablast 5, but tuned into a slightly softer and more grounded ride. Runners who found the Novablast 5 too soft will feel right at home here. It narrowly beat out the Cumulus 27, which could not match this shoe’s traction and outsole durability.

3. Adidas Adios 9

The Adidas Adios 9 is the low-stack outlier of this list, and it deserves far more attention than it gets. In a market obsessed with 40 mm max-cushion platforms, this lightweight trainer offers more than enough stack for lighter-built runners who want to feel the road while still benefiting from the propulsion of Lightstrike Pro foam.

It is also remarkably durable, with a Lightstrike traction outsole that never falters, and the simple, breathable upper keeps the whole package honest. Better still, it comes at a notably accessible price for what you get. If you want something nimble and engaging that works your feet and legs rather than pampering them, this is the shoe.

2. Puma Velocity Nitro 4

The Puma Velocity Nitro 4 might be the best value-for-money running shoe of 2025. The Nitro midsole foam, reportedly similar to what Puma uses in its Fast-R Nitro Elite 3 race shoe, delivers a ride well above what the price tag suggests. Oddly, Puma barely mentions this in its marketing, which remains a genuine puzzle.

It works comfortably across a wide range of paces, the weight is sensible, and the outsole grip is excellent. The only occasional wish is for a slightly taller stack, which is what the Magnify Nitro 3 covers in Puma’s own lineup. As an all-round package, it is one of the best shoes of the year, not just one of the best daily trainers.

1. Adidas Evo SL

The top daily shoe of 2025 is the Adidas Evo SL. Its extra stack makes it slightly more versatile than the Velocity Nitro 4, at the cost of a small price bump. What Adidas has done here is place its top-level foam into a more affordable package, and the result is a shoe that dominates daily use: a durable and versatile outsole, a simple yet effective upper, and a ride that stays composed at almost any pace.

The woven version has just been released, and the standard white and black colorway was among the most-worn shoes of the entire year. In a rotation where Nike’s Pegasus 41 does not quite fit and the Vomero 18 has drifted into high-stack territory, the Evo SL stands almost unopposed. Adidas has flooded the market with it, and for good reason.

Buying Advice

If you want maximum value, the Velocity Nitro 4 is almost impossible to argue against. If you prefer to feel the road and run lighter, the Adios 9 is a brilliant and affordable choice that more runners should try. Runners needing gentle support with excellent grip should look straight at the GT-2000 14, while fans of plush cushioning will get on well with the Huracane 25.

For most runners seeking one shoe to do nearly everything, the Evo SL remains the safest and most versatile pick of the year, provided the slightly higher price fits the budget.

Conclusion

Daily trainers in 2025 benefited enormously from race-day foam trickling down into affordable packages. The Adidas Evo SL and Puma Velocity Nitro 4 define that trend, while the Adios 9 proves there is still a place for a nimble low-stack shoe. Whichever direction you lean, there has rarely been a better time to upgrade your everyday rotation.
