Adidas Adizero Ambition Review: A Middle Distance Spike That Gets the Job Done

A high school middle distance runner puts the Adidas Adizero Ambition through a full track season in the 800m and mile. Here is how it scored.

Introduction

Middle distance racing demands a spike that is light, responsive, and comfortable enough to hold form through a full 800m or mile. The Adidas Adizero Ambition brings Adidas racing foam into a track spike aimed squarely at that range, and our testing comes from a first-year high school varsity runner who used it across a full spring season in the 800m and mile.

The big takeaway up front: it scored 11 out of 15, comfortably in the green, and the runner said he would happily buy it again for next season.

Fit and Upper

The upper is a breathable mesh with conventional laces. The toe box fits nicely, with enough room for slightly wider feet and no hard contact with the front of the shoe when running hard. Sizing is true to size in US men’s 12.5, with no sense that it ran small or large.

The one fit complaint was a small amount of heel lift, more than there should be in a spike at this level. A touch more padding or lockdown around the heel is the clearest improvement to ask for in a next version.

Cushioning and Plate

Underfoot is Lightstrike Pro, the same foam family Adidas uses in its road racing shoes, now applied to a track spike. It is reasonably cushioned for the category, though not perfectly: the metal spikes are still noticeable through the forefoot on harder efforts.

That said, the context matters. Compared with typical cross country spikes, which usually offer far less cushioning, the Ambition feels generous. The plate itself is stiff, which is expected at this level and arguably what you want from a middle distance spike.

Weight

At 6.24 ounces (177g) in a US men’s 12.5, the weight is genuinely impressive for a shoe of that size. Slipping it on after a warm-up in a light daily trainer produced an immediate feeling of being ready to race.

On-Track Performance

This is a middle distance spike, best suited to the 800m through the mile (1600m). It could stretch a little beyond that, but the cushioning is really tuned for the shorter end of that range. Our tester raced mostly the 800m, with a handful of miles, and found the shoe gave him a noticeable pop off the track. The mile in particular exposed that forefoot spike feel a bit more, so the 800m is where this shoe shines.

The results back it up: a 4:57 mile and a 2:11 800m, both personal bests, in the shoe.

Durability Compared

Durability was a clear win against a New Balance spike our tester also used that season. After being stepped on once, the New Balance upper tore up badly around the toe area. The Adizero Ambition took the same kind of contact once and did not budge. The mesh held up where the competitor did not.

Scores and Verdict

  • Form (design, weight, geometry, looks): 4 out of 5. The gray with neon green colorway did not land, but the overall look and weight impressed.
  • Fit (upper, heel, laces, hot spots): 3 out of 5. Solid toe box and sizing, but the heel lift holds it back.
  • Function (performance for its purpose): 4 out of 5. It did the job and delivered personal bests.

That is 11 out of 15 overall, a green-tier score. For a first-year track athlete racing 800m to mile, this is an easy recommendation, and our tester says he would buy it again or try the next version for spring track.

Conclusion

The Adidas Adizero Ambition is a well-rounded middle distance spike: Lightstrike Pro cushioning, a very competitive weight, and durability that shrugs off mid-race contact. The heel lockdown could use refinement, and the colorways are a matter of taste, but on the track it delivered exactly what a developing middle distance runner needs.
