Nike Vaporfly 3 vs Saucony Endorphin Pro 3: which racing shoe suits your running?
Comparison of two of the best super shoes for half marathon and marathon racing — in terms of ride feel, stability, fit and durability — so you can choose the right model for your next race.
Introduction
Few matchups in the super shoe world are as interesting as the Nike Vaporfly 3 vs the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3. Both sit at the top of their brands’ marathon racing lineups, both use premium PEBA-based foams with a carbon plate, and both are widely considered among the best racing shoes available — regardless of distance or skill level. The ride character is roughly 85% the same, but it is the remaining 15% that should decide which one you buy.
This comparison draws on longer-term use: about a month with the Vaporfly 3 covering 15–20 miles (about 24–32 km), and about a year with the Endorphin Pro 3, covering roughly 200 miles (about 320 km). Here’s how they differ in terms of ride, fit, stability, and durability, and who each model suits.
Overview: Nike Vaporfly 3
The Vaporfly 3 is the top marathon racing shoe from Nike, positioned in the lineup just below the Alphafly. It uses a full-length ZoomX foam bed with a carbon plate, and the stack is 40 mm at the heel and 32 mm at the forefoot with an 8 mm drop. At 6.5 oz (about 184 g) in men’s US 9, it is one of the lightest marathon racing shoes on the market. It still retails at a lower price than several direct competitors, making it a strong value proposition in this category.

Overview: Saucony Endorphin Pro 3
The Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 is the brand’s top marathon racing model, positioned just below the Endorphin Elite. Its stack is nearly identical to the Vaporfly — 39.5 mm at the heel and 31.5 mm at the forefoot, again with an 8 mm drop — and it also uses a full-length PEBA foam bed. It is slightly heavier: 7.2 oz (about 204 g) in men’s US 9, and the price has recently risen from $250 toward the $265 range. That puts it noticeably higher than the Vaporfly in terms of price.
Midsole and foam comparison
Both shoes use PEBA-based compounds — the foam family pioneered by Nike with the original Vaporfly and still considered the benchmark for marathon racing. The key difference is formulation. Saucony uses a pelletized PEBA version in its PWRRUN PB midsole, with visible expanded pellets reminiscent of old-school Adidas Boost. Nike’s ZoomX, on the other hand, is one solid foam bed that over time begins to slightly crinkle and compress.

In practice, ZoomX feels softer, while PWRRUN PB feels firmer. Both offer excellent energy return, but ZoomX provides more of a floating, marshmallow-like ride, where you feel the ground and the plate less and simply spin your legs in cushioned comfort. The Pro 3 feels a bit firmer, and its rocker shape gives the illusion of greater forefoot control at toe-off. If you prefer a plush, maximally cushioned feel, the Vaporfly wins; if you like a firmer, more controlled ride, the Pro 3 is the better match.
Stability and platform shape
Stability is where platform geometry matters most. The Vaporfly 3 has one of the narrowest heels among racing shoes, with the widest part of the platform at the forefoot–midfoot junction, then narrowing toward the midfoot and rear. This shape favors forefoot strikers who land and load the front of the platform.

The Endorphin Pro 3 takes a wider, more forgiving approach. Its widest point is still in the mid-forefoot, but the heel is considerably wider than the Vaporfly’s, making it more suitable for heel strikers and runners with mild stability needs. The Pro 3 also has a more aggressive rear rocker with a distinct heel bevel, while the Vaporfly remains flatter at the back. This geometry, combined with a wider base, makes the Pro 3 friendlier for long runs and beginner runners among super shoes.
Fit and upper
The fit differences are real but modest. The Vaporfly 3 offers slightly more room in the toe box than you’d expect, even though Nike is often criticized for narrow racing fits, and its textured laces hold a solid, snug fit when tied tight. Saucony still uses a more traditional lacing system with a rocket-like racing fit in the forefoot.
The Pro 3 has better heel lockdown. The Vaporfly historically had a loose lockdown around the ankle, and although the Vaporfly 3 improves in this regard, the Saucony simply fits better in the back. Both uppers are breathable, with the Nike feeling slightly airier and lighter on foot; the half-ounce weight difference (about 14 g) is mostly felt underfoot, not in the upper. Neither shoe is difficult to put on, and both have held up without any fit or lockdown issues.

Durability
Durability separates these two models more than anything else. With only 15 miles (about 24 km) on the Vaporfly 3, the rear of the ZoomX midsole has already started to fray where the exposed foam contacts the ground. This is intentional: these are shoes built for a maximum of one or two marathons, and foam fraying does not degrade performance. Heel strikers, however, will grind down that exposed foam at the back faster.
The Endorphin Pro 3 is the clear winner in terms of durability. At around 200 miles (about 320 km), the heel is fully protected by rubber, and the outsole is in good condition, with only minor foam abrasion on the lateral edge. It’s easy to imagine another 100 miles (about 160 km) on the same pair. That’s why the Pro 3 is the better choice if you want to use a super shoe during training or on long runs, while the Vaporfly is best saved purely for target races.
Buying advice: which one is for you?
Choose the Nike Vaporfly 3 if you are an intermediate or advanced runner chasing a fast half marathon or marathon, run with a forefoot strike, and don’t overpronate. It remains the default choice at the front of races, and few runners regret lacing it up on race day. Just treat it as race day gear, not a high-mileage trainer, and keep in mind the narrow heel if you run with a heel strike.
Choose the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 if you want a firmer, more controlled ride, a wider and more stable platform, better heel lockdown, and far better durability. It’s also the stronger option for beginner runners and anyone who wants a super shoe that feels a bit more like a regular shoe — whether for a target race or an occasional long run.
Conclusion
The Vaporfly 3 represents pure race day performance in the lightest package, while the Endorphin Pro 3 counters with a firmer ride, a more forgiving platform, and significantly better durability. Choose the Nike for speed and racing pedigree, and the Saucony for durability, stability, and a friendlier overall experience.
