Under Armour Velocity Elite Review: A Soft, Mid-Tier Super Shoe

Under Armour's first true super shoe brings a very soft ride and a low-volume upper, but it struggles to snap back at race pace.

Introduction

Under Armour’s Velocity Elite is the brand’s first true entry into the super shoe category, and it arrives with a distinct character: extremely soft underfoot rather than aggressively bouncy. After roughly 30 miles of testing, our take is that it sits in the mid tier of the super shoe market rather than at the very top. That distinction matters, and it shapes who should actually buy this shoe.

The shoe uses half PEBAX in the upper and a supercritical foam underneath, with a unisex sizing scheme where a men’s 9 / women’s 10.5 weighs 7.7 ounces. Stack height is 36mm in the heel and 28mm in the forefoot for an 8mm drop, although it feels lower than that on the run.

Who This Shoe Is For

The Velocity Elite is built for runners who want a very comfortable, well-cushioned ride for up-tempo and tempo efforts. Where it shines is when you settle into a controlled rhythm. Where it falls short is at genuinely fast race pace, so it is best understood as a comfortable trainer with super shoe DNA rather than a pure 5K and 10K racing weapon.

Main Strengths

The standout quality of this shoe is softness. Because there is no outsole, the sole ends up being incredibly soft and cushioned underfoot, which makes it genuinely pleasant for up-tempo and tempo efforts where you are not demanding maximum snap.

The upper is fairly light and reasonably good overall. It features a flexible, see-through design with a solid rearfoot build, and the low-volume fit works well for many foot shapes. The foam construction, combining PEBAX in the upper with supercritical foam below, gives the shoe a premium feel in hand.

Fit and Feel

The Velocity Elite uses unisex sizing, with a men’s 9 / women’s 10.5 coming in at 7.7 ounces. The fit is low-volume and leans a little wide and a little long. That combination proved fine on one foot and slightly odd on the other, so the extra length is worth noting if your sizing sits between options.

One fit detail to watch: the laces sit a little low, which caused some pinching across the front of the foot. The 8mm drop feels lower than its number on the run, giving the shoe a flatter, closer-to-the-ground sensation than the stack suggests.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The most important limitation is speed. At 5K and near-10K efforts, the shoe simply cannot push. It is not snappy or fast, and it should not be chosen as a race-day weapon for short distances. If you want super softness and comfort, it can work. If you want something super snappy and fast, this is not it.

Durability is a second concern. The lack of an outsole means the foam is exposed, and the soft material wears down noticeably with hard use.

Stability is the third. The forefoot is maybe acceptable, but the midfoot and heel are super narrow, and the shoe is not stable overall. Runners who need stability support should look elsewhere.

Buying Advice

If your priorities are comfort, softness, and a premium-feeling upper for tempo-style running, the Velocity Elite is a reasonable pick within its price class, and it can sometimes be found on resale platforms for around a hundred dollars. If you need a shoe that can race fast, stay stable, or hold up to heavy mileage, a firmer and more durable option will serve you better.

Conclusion

Under Armour’s first true super shoe gets a lot right: a very soft supercritical foam ride, a light and flexible upper, and a comfortable character for tempo running. It misses at the very top of the category because it lacks snap at fast paces, wears quickly without an outsole, and offers little stability through the midfoot and heel. Treat it as a mid-tier soft super shoe, and it delivers what it promises.
