Under Armour Velocity Distance: First Run Review of a Big, Plush Cruiser
A high-cushion daily trainer with a new HOVR Plus midsole, a wide stable platform, and a clear focus on easy, long-paced running.
Introduction
The Under Armour Velocity Distance is a big, high-cushion daily trainer built for easy-paced running. On a first 10K around West London on a hot day, it came across as a plush, stable cruiser with a clear identity: comfortable miles over quick ones. This is a first-run look, with more testing to follow for a full verdict.
Specs and Price
The Velocity Distance packs 38 mm of cushioning in the heel and 32 mm in the forefoot for a 6 mm drop. It weighs 10.8 oz (306 g) in a UK 8.5 / US 9.5, which is fairly weighty but roughly in the ballpark for an easy-day cruiser of this size. Pricing is £145 in the UK and $160 in the US.
The HOVR Plus Midsole
The headline feature is a new HOVR Plus midsole, a beaded HTPE foam that Under Armour says is lighter and more responsive than the older HOVR material. In practice it is still fairly dense, with limited compression on a squeeze test compared with the softest daily trainers on the market.

A translucent midsole frame acts as a sturdier carrier around the softer cushioning foam, adding guidance and support. On the run, the wide platform and higher sidewalls make the shoe feel remarkably reliable underfoot, almost stability-shoe-like in its guidance, without feeling unnatural.
Upper and Outsole
The upper is a thick but highly perforated mono mesh with a coating for strength, and it breathes well even on a genuinely hot day. The heel collar is medium padded and quite high, sitting above a structured heel counter. There is a thin gusseted tongue, a reinforced lace carriage, and a pretty standard lacing setup.
Underneath, a generous covering of thick rubber covers all the impact zones and extends across the forefoot, which bodes well for durability.

Fit and Sizing
The run was done in a UK 8.5 / US 9.5, a regular size in Under Armour shoes. Toe-box length is good, with a full thumb’s width of room, and the forefoot is wide and spacious with decent wiggle room to splay the toes. The feel is roomy rather than sloppy, reminiscent of a wide-forefoot daily trainer. Runners with narrower feet may find the volume a bit much.

Lockdown across the midfoot is good thanks to a lace carriage that pulls in tight, and the gusseted tongue prevents lace pinch. The main fit complaint is at the heel: there was a little slipping into the back of the shoe, and a tighter, more secure feel there would be welcome. The high heel collar and medium padding caused no irritation despite the initial concern. Overall, going true to size is a safe recommendation unless you have narrow feet or want a snugger fit.
First Run: What the Shoe Feels Like
After roughly 10K at a steady cruising pace, the Velocity Distance shows its character. The HOVR Plus foam is the softest, most accommodating cushioning in an Under Armour shoe in a long time, a clear step on from the firm, blocky feel of older models. It is not the softest shoe available, and it still returns quite quickly with plenty of ground feel and connection.
The trade-offs show up at pace. The rocker point sits quite far forward, so the roll-through feels flat rather than sprightly, and the wide platform reinforces that. This is not a shoe with much when you try to get out of first gear. Even for very long runs of 90 minutes to two hours, runners who prefer something lighter and more energetic on the feet may want less cushion in exchange for more snap. The character sits somewhere alongside the ASICS GEL-Nimbus line or the Brooks Ghost Max: a big shoe best used for lower, slower running.
Who Should Buy It
The Velocity Distance suits runners who want a big, highly cushioned, wide-platformed shoe for easy, recovery, and long slow runs. If you have found Under Armour shoes too firm in the past, this softer platform is exactly what it is trying to fix, and it is arguably one of the better recent Under Armour releases in terms of delivering on its intent.

If your priority is a nimble, energetic ride for faster sessions or even very long time on feet, there are lighter options worth considering. But as a comfortable, reliable cruiser, it makes a strong first impression.
Conclusion
The Under Armour Velocity Distance is a big, super-comfortable high-cushion trainer with moderate softness, mild liveliness, and excellent stability from its wide platform and guided midsole. The HOVR Plus foam is a genuine step forward, the upper breathes well in heat, and durability looks promising. Heel lock-down could be tighter and the shoe is heavy, but for easy-paced miles it is a likeable, well-executed package. Further miles will tell how it holds up beyond an hour at a time.
