TYR Valkyrie Elite V2 First Run: A Lightweight Race Shoe That Feels Different

The TYR Valkyrie Elite V2 is a major overhaul of the brand's carbon race shoe, with supercritical foam, a carbon power plate, and a remarkably light ride over 5K.

Introduction

The TYR Valkyrie Elite V2 arrives as a complete rethink of the brand’s previous carbon race shoe. TYR, a brand better known in functional fitness circles, has produced a shoe that feels genuinely modern: very light, springy in a subtle way, and surprisingly comfortable for something aimed squarely at race day.

The headline numbers back that up. It costs $280 (no UK price confirmed yet), weighs 152g (5.4 oz) for men in size 7.5, and has a 6mm drop. Those are numbers that put it in the conversation with some of the lightest race shoes available.

What Makes the Valkyrie Elite V2 Tick

This is a lightweight race shoe built around a carbon power plate positioned between two layers of Hyper Launch foam. That foam is made from 100% supercritical ATPE and is aimed at delivering a high level of energy return with every stride. The plate is designed to add stability through the gait cycle while contributing to a propulsive toe off.

TYR has also paired the foam-and-plate stack with an extended forefoot geometry and a late-stage rocker, a combination intended to create a mechanical advantage and support running economy over race distances. The Speed Wave upper uses a breathable ETPE mesh with reinforcement paneling for a structured, race-ready fit, and serrated laces help keep everything locked in. There’s also a TYR track outsole built for traction and durability across different course surfaces.

First Run: Fast at 5K

The first outing was a parkrun: a 5K at comfortable pace plus one all-out effort. The result was 18:31, the fastest time in about a year, and the shoe played its part well. It feels very light on the feet with a nice bit of energy return, and it reads as a genuinely top-tier carbon plate race shoe.

What stands out is how natural it feels. Unlike some carbon shoes that aggressively push your foot into a specific position, this one stays comfortable even on easy running. The focus is lightness with a touch of springiness rather than bounce, and the ride felt close to the floor and stable through several tight turns on the course. It isn’t wobbly, and it isn’t aggressive in any way.

For sizing, the fit ran a little small. A UK size 8 tester took a size 7.5 (US 8.5) and would go up half a size if possible. It is also a restrictive, lean race shoe: the laces had to be loosened along the whole forefoot just to get in. If you have wider feet, you will notice it.

Durability and Grip

The outsole deserves a mention. The rocker shape may look aggressive, but the ride is anything but, and the rubber holds up impressively for a shoe this light. There’s a fairly thick layer of rubber on the forefoot, and while the heel has very little coverage, the rubber stayed intact on both shoes with no sign of peeling. Most very light carbon race shoes lose their outsole rubber early, so this was a pleasant surprise. Grip was solid too.

Early Verdict

The Valkyrie Elite V2 is a shoe to watch. It’s light, it feels fast, and it was genuinely enjoyable over 5K. The tester’s instinct is that it may be a little lean for a full marathon, but 10K and half marathon attempts are next on the list, and given how comfortable it is, that could still change.

Compared with the previous Valkyrie Elite Carbon, this is a different shoe altogether. That version felt unevolved against the foams of modern rivals, whereas this one has the lightness and natural ride of something like the Mizuno Wave Pure, minus any aggressive plate feel. If you skipped TYR’s earlier race shoes, this is a different thing altogether, and the brand is clearly serious about developing it into a competitive model.

Buying Advice

If you want a light, fast shoe that feels natural rather than aggressive, the Valkyrie Elite V2 is a strong option. Just size up half a size and expect a lean, restrictive fit if your feet are on the wider side.

Conclusion

The TYR Valkyrie Elite V2 is one of the more interesting recent arrivals in the carbon race shoe space. It combines a supercritical foam stack and carbon power plate with a genuinely light, natural ride, and it impressed immediately over 5K. At $280 it is positioned as a serious race-day option, and it looks like a shoe that will turn heads this season.
