TYR Maverick V1 Review: A Surprisingly Strong Daily Trainer From a Gym Brand

The TYR Maverick V1 is a lightweight, versatile daily running shoe with a dense supercritical midsole that rewards faster paces. Here's how it performed across 60km of testing.

Introduction

TYR is best known in triathlon, CrossFit and functional fitness circles, and running shoes are not what the brand built its reputation on. That is exactly why the Maverick V1 is such an interesting release. Having covered roughly 60km in it across easy runs and interval sessions, this is a daily trainer that genuinely delivers, rather than a brand simply trying to enter a new market.

Who This Shoe Is For

The Maverick V1 is a versatile daily trainer designed for ticking off the miles, with enough pace to handle tempo work and speed sessions. At 212g (7.5 oz) for men in a size 8, with an 8mm drop and a stack height that is surprising for the weight, it feels light on the foot without being a stripped-down race shoe.

If your weekly mix leans toward faster sessions, tempo efforts and interval work, this shoe fits that brief particularly well. It is not a complex race shoe, but it comfortably handles a wide range of training runs.

How It Fits and Feels

The fit has one notable quirk: the forefoot is not very roomy, with limited space between the big toe and the end of the shoe. Going up half a size is the sensible move for a comfortable fit. Behind that, the shoe is comfortable, with an expansive forefoot section, a comfortable midfoot, and a breathable mesh upper built to stay ventilated on long efforts.

The midsole uses TYR’s Flight Time foam, a supercritical compound lab tested to produce an 8% increase in air time, improved running economy, better energy return and a longer stride length. On the foot, it is a relatively dense, soft-but-not-squishy foam that compresses nicely and gives a satisfying amount of energy back.

Performance at Different Paces

This shoe wants to go faster. On easy runs it is perfectly fine and comfortable, but it never feels like its natural habitat. Pick up the pace, though, and the Maverick V1 really comes into its own: the midsole compresses and rebounds with a lively, bouncy feel, and the transition is smooth and efficient at consistent tempo efforts and faster reps alike. Around 4:20/km pace, it felt genuinely excellent.

The density of the midsole also gives it a touch of stability, since it does not squish and wobble underfoot. That said, it is a fairly tall shoe and the way it rolls means ground contact feels a little less planted than a dedicated stability shoe, so runners with real stability needs should take note.

Outsole and Grip

The outsole carries a thick layer of TYR Track rubber that protects the midsole foam and offers confident grip. Testing included plenty of wet roads and dirt footpaths, with no issues on either surface. It is one of the more impressive outsoles on a daily trainer at this level.

How It Compares

Against the adidas Evo SL, the Maverick V1 is slightly firmer and more dense in the midsole, with the Evo SL offering a bit more softness, energy return and a touch of wobble. Runners who dislike overly soft shoes may actually prefer this firmer feel. The New Balance Rebel V5 has similar midsole softness but compresses more, so if you want to avoid a squishy ride, this is a good alternative around the same price point.

Things to Consider Before Buying

  • The forefoot runs short, so plan on going up half a size.
  • It skews toward faster efforts; easy-run specialists may prefer a softer ride.
  • It is a fairly tall shoe with less ground contact than a true stability shoe.
  • Availability can be limited depending on your region.

Conclusion

The TYR Maverick V1 is a solid, versatile daily trainer that punches well above expectations for a brand new to serious running shoes. It is good value, delivers on its energy return claims, and is genuinely enjoyable at tempo and faster paces. If you want a firmer-feeling trainer in the same bracket as the Evo SL and Rebel V5, this is a shoe worth serious consideration.
