Typhur Dome 2 Review: A Lighter Air Fryer with 360-Degree Heating

The Typhur Dome 2 adds a bottom burner for even cooking and weighs 2.5 pounds less than the original. We tested pizza, wings, fries, and more to see if it lives up to the hype.

Introduction

The Typhur Dome 1 earned a reputation as one of the best air fryers available, with daily use and reliable performance. The Typhur Dome 2 builds on that foundation with meaningful hardware changes and new software features. The most significant upgrade is the addition of a bottom burner, enabling 360-degree heating alongside the existing top element. We tested the Dome 2 across pizza, fries, wings, baked goods, and temperature-controlled cooking to see whether these changes justify an upgrade.

Design and Key Upgrades

The most obvious difference between the Dome 2 and its predecessor is the bottom burner. This addition creates true 360-degree heating coverage, which has immediate implications for cooking evenness and speed. To accommodate the bottom element, the Dome 2 sits slightly higher than the original, with a noticeably larger air gap underneath and an enlarged rear vent.

Despite being larger, the Dome 2 is actually lighter than the Dome 1 by 2.5 pounds, a surprising engineering achievement. The trays are largely similar, though the Dome 2 removes some structural elements from the original design. Both crisper trays and standard trays weigh the same across generations.

The Dome 2 offers eight physical presets compared to ten on the Dome 1, but the app unlocks all 15 presets and allows full customization. The temperature range spans 105°F to 450°F, and the unit operates at roughly 55 decibels on the air fry setting, making it relatively quiet for an air fryer. A preheat function is now available, which the original lacked.

App Connectivity and Controls

Connecting the Dome 2 to the Typhur app requires simultaneously pressing the up and down time arrows until a Wi-Fi symbol flashes. From there, open the app, select the add symbol, navigate to Typhur Dome 2, choose your 2.4 GHz network, and enter your password. The unit only connects via 2.4 GHz, so if you encounter connection issues, check your Wi-Fi settings first.

Temperature units can be switched between Fahrenheit and Celsius by simultaneously pressing the up and down temperature arrows. The app allows customization of all presets, and changes made in the app automatically update the physical buttons on the unit, which is a thoughtful design choice.

Pizza Performance

Pizza cooking is where the bottom burner truly shines. The Dome 2 includes a dedicated pizza preset and preheat function. For frozen pizza, Typhur recommends skipping the crisper tray and using the standard tray with the default preset, which reduces both time and temperature compared to box directions. Testing confirmed that frozen pizza cooks evenly, with a perfectly crispy bottom and well-browned top.

Homemade pizza also performs exceptionally well. Using the manual’s recommended 390°F setting, homemade dough produced a pizza with an excellent crust texture and perfect bottom browning. The bottom burner’s contribution to even heat distribution is most apparent in pizza cooking, where consistent bottom-to-top cooking is critical.

Fries and Vegetable Cooking

Thin-cut French fries cooked in the Dome 2 emerge crispy and uniform. While various techniques exist for extra-crispy fries (soaking, blanching, baking powder dusting), simply coating fries with olive oil and cooking longer than the default setting produces excellent results. Tossing halfway through ensures even crisping. Coarse sea salt finishes the fries perfectly.

The app includes a fry setting, though personal preference often dictates cooking longer than the default recommendation for maximum crispness. Crispy chickpeas, seasoned with olive oil and spices, also cook exceptionally well and make for a healthy, crunchy snack with minimal effort.

Chicken Wings and Protein Cooking

Wings benefit significantly from the Dome 2’s heating capabilities. The default wing setting is 395°F for 14 minutes, but achieving crispy wings typically requires 45 to 50 minutes total, especially if wings are slightly frozen at the start. Dividing wings into drums and flats before cooking ensures even browning.

Pre-drying wings in the refrigerator on an uncovered wire rack the day before cooking improves crispness by removing surface moisture. Tossing with olive oil and seasoning (such as Blazin Bird or custom spice blends) before cooking adds flavor. The Dome 2 can accommodate a large batch of wings, and the results rival deep-fried or grilled wings in quality.

Temperature-Controlled Cooking with Typhur Sync Gold

The Typhur Sync Gold wireless thermometer transforms steak cooking in the Dome 2. The thermometer’s six sensors per probe provide accurate temperature readings throughout the meat. A recent app update allows the Sync Gold to control the Dome 2’s cook cycle, automatically adjusting heat based on internal temperature.

When using the thermometer-guided cook feature, set your target temperature (for example, 130°F for medium-rare steak) and the app alerts you when the steak reaches the desired temperature, accounting for carryover cooking. This integration represents advanced technology for an air fryer and has proven reliable in testing. One potential improvement would be an app alert for flipping, which could be added in a future update.

Baking and Desserts

The bake setting, accessible only through the app, cooks chocolate chip cookies approximately twice as fast as a traditional oven while producing superior results: crispy edges with soft, gooey centers. Adjusting time and temperature between batches fine-tunes the outcome. The consensus is that cookies baked in the Dome 2 outperform oven-baked versions.

Maintenance and Cleanup

The ceramic nonstick coating on the basket and crisper tray makes cleanup straightforward, with most food residue coming off easily. Cleaning after each use prevents buildup and keeps the unit in top condition. The app includes a self-cleaning function that should be used after several cooking sessions to maintain the appliance properly.

Conclusion

The Typhur Dome 2 is the best air fryer we have tested. The addition of a bottom burner delivers tangible improvements in cooking evenness and speed, particularly for pizza and proteins. The lighter weight, larger air gap, and enhanced app integration make it a meaningful upgrade over the original Dome 1. The Dome 1’s track record of daily, reliable use across multiple family members suggests the Dome 2 will hold up equally well to regular cooking demands. For anyone seeking a premium air fryer capable of handling pizza, wings, baked goods, and temperature-controlled cooking, the Dome 2 is a clear choice.
