Introduction

Over the past few weeks of using the Tortuga Laptop Backpack as both a field bag and a travel bag, it has handled both roles well. The big draw here is the simple design: a large top-access main compartment, a generous top pocket, and easy-to-open pockets that stay accessible even when the bag is empty. If you want one bag that covers daily laptop duty and the occasional weekend trip, this one deserves a close look.

Who This Bag Is For

With dimensions of about 19 by 11 by 7 inches (49 x 28 x 18 cm), the Laptop Backpack is sized to work as a personal item on most flights. The width and depth fit easily into a typical personal-item sizer, and the length is tight but squishes down, so as long as you don’t overpack it, it fits fine. Just note that the bag can puff out a little if you stuff it past its comfort zone.

The 24 liter capacity works well as an everyday carry or laptop bag. It is a little small for a dedicated travel bag, but thanks to the huge main compartment, it can handle shorter weekend trips if you pack light.

Design and Organization

The exterior layout is where this bag earns its keep. You get a large top pocket, a side-access front slash pocket, two side water bottle pockets, and a luggage pass-through sleeve on the back.

The top pocket is one of the best features. A wide zipper runs almost all the way down the side, giving easy access to all your small gear and electronics without the pocket being so gigantic that things get lost inside. There is a key leash inside, plus a back zipper that looks like a second pocket but is actually another access point into the top pocket from the main compartment. That means you can keep the top pocket closed or locked and still reach most of your gear through the main compartment.

The side-access slash pocket sits under a small fabric flap, so it is not immediately obvious from the front. It is thin but fairly large, and it stops short of the top of the front panel so it doesn’t steal volume from the top pocket. The side zipper placement is smart: flip the bag around on your left shoulder and you can open the pocket one-handed while wearing it.

Materials and Build Quality

Tortuga made a strong fabric choice for its new line of packs: a Shell 200 waterproof sailcloth. It feels similar to X-Pac but softer and a little less stiff, so it reads more like a natural fabric than shiny sailcloth. Compared with stiffer VX42-style fabric used on some travel packs, the difference in feel is noticeable.

The hardware is premium across the board: large number 8 YKK zippers on the main compartment, smaller number 5s on the other pockets, and water-resistant AquaGuard zippers on all the outside pockets. Combined with the waterproof fabric, that makes this a very water-resistant backpack. Security is covered too, with locking zippers on both the main compartment and the laptop compartment. They sit close enough together that a single lock can secure both at once.

Laptop Protection and Interior Layout

The back of the bag is where it gets its name. A well-organized electronics section holds up to a 16 inch laptop, and a 15.5 inch Dell fits with room to spare. The laptop pad is thick, fuzzy-lined, and backed by roughly half an inch of padding, with two layers of padding separating the laptop and tablet sections from the rest of the bag.

Both the laptop and tablet compartments have false bottoms to protect your gear when you set the bag down, and the padding protects from all angles without adding much bulk. The dual access design is genuinely useful: load the laptop from inside the main compartment, reach all your electronics through the back, or use the separate outside pocket to slip the laptop in and out quickly.

What Fits Inside

Packing is straightforward thanks to the simple layout. A realistic long-weekend loadout includes a packing cube with enough clothes for the weekend, a laptop, a tablet, a travel towel, toiletries, a light jacket, and some minimal electronics and sunglasses. The packing cube drops into the bottom of the main compartment, the jacket and toiletry bag sit on top, and the top and slash pockets swallow the electronics and travel documents.

Fully packed out like this, the bag weighed about 6.6 kg (14.6 lb), a little heavy because of the laptop, but the carry handles it well.

Carry Comfort and Travel Features

The carry system is simple but comfortable. The shoulder straps are wide, very thick, and well padded with a breathable backing, and the easy-to-adjust sternum strap has stretchy strap keepers so nothing dangles. The back padding is molded EVA foam: firmer than standard closed-cell foam, giving the bag good structure while still feeling soft and breathable, with air channels along the back panel.

On the back there is a thin, horizontally oriented luggage pass-through sleeve. The horizontal design is deliberate: when you slide the bag over a rolling luggage handle, the bag stays vertical, so you can still reach your gear. Two deep, extremely stretchy water bottle pockets lay flat when empty and expand from a slim 16 ounce bottle up to a full one-liter bottle, with small fabric loops for clipping or carabiner attachment. There is also a fabric loop on the back for attaching a bike light.

Worth noting: the Laptop Backpack does not come with a hip belt. At this size, it doesn’t really need one. If you need to carry more, Tortuga’s 30L and 40L Travel Backpacks both include removable hip belts.

Buying Advice

Buy the Tortuga Laptop Backpack if you want one simple, well-built bag for daily laptop carry that can also double as a personal item on short trips. The combination of a soft waterproof sailcloth shell, premium YKK hardware, locking zippers, and genuinely thoughtful organization is rare at this size. Skip it if you need a larger travel capacity or a hip belt, in which case the Travel Backpack 30 or 40 liter versions are the better fit.

Conclusion

The Tortuga Laptop Backpack nails the fundamentals: great organization, easy access, comfortable carry, and clean aesthetics built on quality materials. The exterior pockets are well placed and easy to reach, the back panel offers serious protection and organization for your laptop, and the dual access design adds real convenience. For everyday carry with occasional weekend-trip duty, it is an easy bag to recommend.
