Torq Running Nutrition Review: Hydration, Recovery, and a Flapjack Worth Raving About
Three Torq sports nutrition products tested over several months of running and mountain biking, with honest notes on taste, mixing, and performance.
Introduction
Getting running nutrition and recovery right is genuinely tricky. It is one of the most personal parts of the sport, and what works brilliantly for one runner can fall flat for another. The only reliable approach is experimenting during training until you find products that sit well in your stomach and keep your energy steady.
Over the past couple of months, we have been testing three products from sports nutrition specialists Torq: a hydration drink mix, a recovery drink mix, and the Explore Organic Flapjack. Testing happened on longer runs, on the mountain bike, and with a group of riding partners who each gave their own verdict. Here is how they performed.
Torq Hydration Drink Mix
Hydration is one of those things that is easy to neglect until it goes wrong. On long distances and in warmer months, getting salts and minerals back into the system matters enormously, and severe cramping in hot weather can completely spoil a race day. This is exactly the problem the Torq Hydration Drink Mix sets out to solve.
The mix comes in single-serving sachets containing sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, with a small amount of sugar for energy. It was sent in lemon, tangerine, and watermelon flavors, and all three are pleasant to drink because the flavor stays subtle rather than sickly sweet. Watermelon was the standout, reminiscent of taking on watermelon during long ultra races.

Practical details are strong. One sachet mixes with 500ml of water, the powder dissolves easily with a shake, and no powdery residue was left behind in the bottle. The sachets are small enough to stash five or six in a race vest, race belt, or cycle jersey pocket without taking up much room. The formula is vegan friendly, free of artificial colorings, preservatives, and sweeteners, and all flavorings are natural. The inclusion of magnesium is particularly welcome, as products lacking it have previously been associated with severe cramping in hot weather.
In use across several longer runs and a couple of three to four hour mountain bike efforts, it caused no stomach issues at all. A more thorough summer test on a long training run or under race conditions is still on the list. Beyond the sachets, a larger bag offering 30 servings works out more cost effective for regular use.
Torq Recovery Drink Mix
Recovery is the part of training that gets forgotten about most often, yet it matters hugely when you have to go again later the same day, as anyone who has done double training days knows. A good recovery drink had been missing from our training plan for years, and adding this one back in quickly highlighted that gap.
The Torq Recovery Drink Mix arrived in banana and mango, strawberries and cream, cookies and cream, and chocolate mint. Three of those were genuinely tasty; chocolate mint divided opinion and was the one flavor that did not work. Mixing is simple: one sachet with 200ml of water, shaken hard. One practical warning learned the hard way: make sure the lid is on tight and hold it while shaking, or the drink goes everywhere.

It mixes well, though it does start to separate if left standing; a good hard shake sorts that out quickly. The formula uses a high quality whey protein with multiple transportable carbohydrates, plus glutamine for muscle and immune support, alongside added vitamins and minerals. There are no artificial flavorings, colorings, preservatives, or sweeteners. The flavors tested are vegetarian friendly, and a vegan friendly option is also available. Larger 500 gram tub and 1.5 kilo bag formats offer better value for long-term use.
Torq Explore Organic Flapjack
The Explore Organic Flapjack was the standout item of everything tested, to the point where the temptation to snack on them outside of training became a real issue. They are organic, vegan friendly, and free of artificial flavorings, preservatives, and colorings, but the headline is simply that they are delicious.
Flavors tested included black forest, banana cake, carrot cake, and apple strudel, among others, and all were very tasty. Black forest was a particular favorite, evoking 1980s black forest gateau. The key point is that eating one feels like a treat rather than forced nutrition. When taking on calories during exercise, a product you actually enjoy is a genuine advantage, because forcing down something you dislike is a negative experience.

Practically, it is a fairly big bar, so on training runs cutting it into bite-sized chunks works well, while on mountain bike rides the whole bar disappears in one go. It suits longer trail runs and ultra races where you may crave something more substantial after too much sugary liquid, and it is equally well suited to long periods on the bike. A group of riding partners sampled them on a mid-ride stop 15 miles in, and the flapjacks went down very well, with each flavor scored enthusiastically.
Buying Advice
If you are new to sports nutrition or struggling with your current brand, Torq is worth a closer look. It is a quality sports nutrition company that uses good ingredients to develop products that work and taste good at the same time. The pricing sits in a middle ground: not the cheapest, not the most expensive, and with nutrition you tend to get what you pay for.
A few practical tips from testing. For hydration, start with the single-serving sachets to find your preferred flavor, then move to the 30-serving bag once you know you like it. For recovery, the sachets are convenient for trying flavors before committing to a tub or bag. For the flapjack, remember it is a substantial bar best suited to longer efforts rather than short road races, so cut it into chunks for running or take the whole bar on the bike.

Conclusion
Across two months of testing, all three Torq products earned their place. The hydration mix delivered electrolytes with magnesium and subtle flavors with no stomach trouble, the recovery drink filled a long-standing gap in the training plan, and the Explore Organic Flapjack proved to be genuinely enjoyable fuel for long rides and runs. Nutrition is personal, so treat these as starting points for your own testing, but all three come recommended for runners and riders looking for quality fuel that tastes as good as it performs.
