Taccia Chinkin Tiger Review: A Limited Edition Fountain Pen That Is Pure Functional Art
A limited edition North American exclusive built on the Sailor King of Pen platform, with hand-etched Chinkin lacquer artwork and a superb 18k gold nib.
Introduction
Some pens are tools first and art second. The Taccia Chinkin Tiger is the opposite: a piece of functional art that happens to write beautifully. It is a limited edition North American exclusive from Taccia, a brand with a very close relationship with Sailor, and it is built on the Sailor King of Pen platform. With a retail price just under $3,700, it sits firmly in the luxury tier, but the craftsmanship here makes the case for that pricing in a way few pens do.
Who This Pen Is For
This is a pen for collectors and enthusiasts who value traditional Japanese craftsmanship as much as writing performance. It is also, honestly, a pen worth admiring even if it is nowhere near your budget. Sometimes it is simply enjoyable to see what the top of the market looks like, and the Chinkin Tiger is one of the clearest examples of that luxury side of the fountain pen world.
If you write large, prefer oversized pens, and want something that will never be mistaken for an everyday workhorse, this is squarely aimed at you.
The Chinkin Technique and the Artwork
The standout feature is the artwork. The pen depicts a tiger along with what appear to be bamboo leaves, plus a subtle swath of stars near the top of the cap. In Japanese culture the tiger symbolizes bravery, good fortune, and the bringing of rain and peace, and the pairing of dragon and tiger traditionally represents heaven and earth.
The base of the pen is ebonite, covered in many layers of urushi lacquer. What follows is the Chinkin technique: an artisan literally etches marks into the cured lacquer, then fills the etching with urushi and applies gold leaf that settles into the carved lines. It is one of the most unforgiving of maki-e family techniques, because there is no painting over a mistake. The artisan gets exactly one shot.

Even under magnification, the gold leaf filling is remarkably crisp and clean. There are no rough edges, no wobble in the lines, and the precision holds up at extreme close range. It is the kind of detail that makes the skill of the artisan unmistakable.
Design, Build, and Handling
The pen is large and oversized, roughly based on the Sailor King of Pen model, with a traditional cigar shape. The cap is rounded at the top and clipless, which feels like the right call: a clip would interrupt the flow of the artwork. There is also no traditional cap band or exterior branding, another decision that lets the art speak for itself.
The cap twists off in just under two rotations to reveal an 18k gold Sailor King of Pen nib stamped with the Taccia logo, available in medium or broad. The section has a comfortable, generous girth that suits this pen’s scale, and the leaf motif carries over onto it. Despite the tiny indentations that make up the images, the surface is filled and smoothed so completely that you feel nothing unusual in the hand.

The cap is not designed to post, which is fine for a pen this size. Capped or uncapped, it feels substantive and well balanced. It is a cartridge/converter pen using Sailor proprietary cartridges, with a Sailor converter included. One quibble: Sailor’s converters are one-size-fits-all, and a larger-capacity option for pens this big would be welcome. The King of Pen housing is rather extended, with a small oval ink window, and given the metal in the housing, eyedropper conversion is not recommended.
Writing Performance and the Included Ink
Sailor King of Pen nibs are among the finest you can find, and this one lives up to that reputation. The broad 18k nib is decently smooth with a touch of really pleasant feedback, generous ink flow, and enough flex under pressure to produce some line variation. Reverse writing is a little sharper, though not scratchy, and the feed keeps up fine with fast writing.
The pen ships with a 40 ml bottle of Taccia Hokusai Sabi Midori ink, and it is a fascinating color. Out of the bottle it looks blue, and on first application it writes blue, but as it dries it transforms into a rich green with a subtle reddish sheen. It pairs beautifully with the broad nib.

Packaging, Availability, and Value
The presentation is appropriately premium. The pen arrives in a soft wooden box along with the ink bottle, and it is housed in one of the nicest kimono pouches we have seen: a lovely exterior pattern, thicker material than most pouches, and a very soft interior. If you own this pen, keeping it protected in that pouch between displays would be the sensible move.
It is a limited edition North American exclusive, available through Goulet Pens, The Fountain Pen Hospital, Pen Boutique, and Airline International. The retail price is just under $3,700, and unlike many luxury pens where the value needs justifying, here it is clearly visible: high-quality urushi lacquer, a unique hand-etched technique, and an artisan skill set that no amount of amateur practice could replicate. It is expensive, and it is warranted.

Things to Consider Before Buying
The price alone will exclude most buyers, and that is worth stating plainly. The plastic feed on a pen at this level may bother some purists who prefer ebonite, though Sailor does not typically use ebonite feeds on modern pens and it does not affect performance. The standard Sailor converter’s small capacity is a minor annoyance for a pen this large, and the cap cannot be posted. None of these are dealbreakers, but they are honest trade-offs at this price.
Conclusion
The Taccia Chinkin Tiger is a stunning piece of functional art: a limited edition North American exclusive with breathtaking hand-etched Chinkin lacquer work and a superb Sailor King of Pen nib. If you are in the market for a pen in this price range, this is one to seriously consider. It is the kind of pen you wish you did not have to send back.
