Introduction

3D printed fountain pens have gone from curiosities to genuinely interesting writing instruments, and the Lorem Ipsum from Scriptorium Pens is a good example of why. The brand is the work of Luca Passamai, an Italian designer originally from Bologna who now lives in Imola, a short train ride southeast of the northern Italian city. His background is in mechanical design for industrial and heavy machinery, and in recent years he has worked in industrial additive manufacturing, the process of building objects one layer at a time.

The company name comes from part of Luca’s surname, which is common in the Venice area of Italy and carries a meaning connected to a wish for the future or something miraculous. After making a few pens, gathering feedback, and attending pen shows, he turned the project into a pen company. The result reviewed here is the Lorem Ipsum, a name borrowed from the placeholder Latin text designers use to fill empty layouts.

Unboxing and First Impressions

The pen arrives in a box featuring the Scriptorium lion logo. Inside, the package includes a few thoughtful extras: a 3D printed pen stand with grooves that neatly hide the layered look of the material, company information, a polishing cloth, and a handwritten writing sample.

The stand is a genuinely nice touch, with a bit of texture on the side that adds interest. The polishing cloth is not the type you would use on this particular pen, but it is a welcome inclusion all the same.

Design, Materials and Build Quality

The Lorem Ipsum has a distinctive feel. It is extremely light, and you can tell it is 3D printed, but in a quality way. The grooves on the cap and barrel give it a strong tactile character and a nice visual element. The one long-term consideration is that those grooves could collect dust over time, which may be exactly what the included cloth is for.

The shape follows a well-considered profile: the cap angles up until about an inch remains where it straightens out, there is a medium-sized rounded step down to the barrel, and the barrel runs straight for about an inch before tapering to a slightly rounded end. Crucially, the printing lacks the telltale layer artifacts that can plague lesser 3D printed pens. This is high-quality printing.

Nib, Section and Filling

The cap twists off with about half a rotation, which suggests triple-start threads. Underneath sits a number six JoWo nib in black, a choice that works well against the dark body, paired with a plastic feed. The section is 3D printed too, with a texture that makes the grip extremely secure and a small flare at the end before angling up to the threads.

The section is slightly thick and comfortably long, so the pen works well unposted. It does post, but it is safer to avoid posting, since the resin could pick up marks over time. The body takes standard international cartridges and converters, and eyedropper conversion is not recommended.

One small detail worth praising: near the end of the closing rotation, the threads create a slight increase in tension, a subtle engineering touch that makes the pen feel like a quality instrument every time you cap it.

Writing Performance

The medium stainless steel JoWo nib performs very nicely. Plated nibs can sometimes feel different, but this one is pleasant to write with. It is a medium writer with moderate ink flow and little line variation, which is typical for the style.

Reverse writing lays down an extra-fine line with significantly lower flow, and in fast writing the feed keeps up without trouble. Tested with a warm burnt orange ink, the pen delivered a consistently enjoyable experience across the page.

Price and Options

The Lorem Ipsum retails for $114, which feels like good value for a quality pen with a quality nib and a genuinely unique look. A bold black model fitted with a number eight Bock titanium nib is also available at a higher price, listed at $234. Nibs come in fine, medium, and broad.

Buying Advice

Who should consider this pen? Anyone curious about well-executed 3D printed fountain pens, writers who prefer a very light pen with a secure textured grip, and buyers who appreciate small engineering details like the progressive capping tension. If you post your pens habitually or dislike textured sections, think twice. At $114, though, it is an accessible way into an interesting category.

Conclusion

The Scriptorium Pens Lorem Ipsum shows how far 3D printing has come in fountain pen making. Between the thoughtful design, the accommodating textured section, the reliable JoWo nib, and a fair retail price, it earns a place among the more interesting pens in this space. If it matches how you like to write, it is easy to recommend.
