Saucony Endorphin Elite vs Nike Alphafly 3: Two Super Shoes, Two Very Different Rides
A head-to-head look at two of the most popular racing super shoes, covering specs, fit, ride character, and which distances each one suits best.
Introduction
Few matchups in the racing shoe market are as interesting as the Saucony Endorphin Elite versus the Nike Alphafly 3. Both are top-tier super shoes with serious pedigree: the Endorphin Elite has been a common sight at races, while the Alphafly line has been worn by some of the fastest marathoners in the world, including Eliud Kipchoge, Kelvin Kiptum, and Sifan Hassan. After putting both through their paces across a range of paces and surfaces, the honest conclusion is that there is no single winner. These two shoes compare remarkably well against each other, and the right choice depends on your mechanics and what kind of ride you want.

Specs: Very Close on Paper
The numbers sit almost side by side. The Endorphin Elite in a men’s size 9 weighs 7.2 oz (204 g), and 6.5 oz (185 g) in a women’s size 8. The Alphafly 3 comes in just a touch lighter at 7.0 oz (198 g) in men’s size 9 and 6.1 oz (174 g) in women’s size 8.
Stack heights are nearly identical too. The Endorphin Elite measures 39.5 mm in the heel and 31.5 mm in the forefoot, while the Alphafly 3 measures 40 mm heel and 32 mm forefoot. Both use an 8 mm drop.
The differences live in the materials. Saucony uses its PWRRUN HG midsole in the Endorphin Elite, a step up from the PWRRUN PB foam in the Endorphin Pro 3, paired with a streamlined spooned-out carbon plate with sharp toe spring. The Alphafly 3 uses ZoomX foam combined with Air Zoom pods. A key change from the Alphafly 2 is that the ZoomX is now a single piece, bridging the medial and lateral sides with a full-length plate and the Air pods underneath, making the whole platform feel more like one unit than the previous two-piece construction.
Fit and Upper
Both shoes deliver a bucket-style heel that wraps and locks the foot in well. The Endorphin Elite uses a softer external wrap around the heel rather than a rigid counter, while the Alphafly 3 has a shallow internal heel counter embedded with ZoomX foam that wraps around the sides. Both hold the heel securely.
Through the midfoot, the Endorphin Elite sits slightly higher in volume and is a little more accommodating, yet the lockdown is excellent with no sliding around. The Alphafly 3 uses a one-piece Atomknit upper designed for breathability and multidirectional strength. Its volume runs lower, everything feels structured and dialed in, and the lace pressure is slightly more noticeable underfoot.

Width is normal to slightly narrow on both, as you would expect from racing shoes. The forefoot on both offers decently wide toe boxes with room for toe splay and some swelling accommodation. The Alphafly fits a bit more snugly through the midfoot, so runners with slightly wider feet may naturally gravitate toward the Endorphin Elite. On pure comfort, the Endorphin Elite gets the narrow edge, but both uppers are among the best in the racing category and neither showed signs of giving way during turns.
Ride and Midsole
This is where the personalities split. ZoomX in the Alphafly 3 has a distinctly trampoline-like feel: it compresses under you and returns a big bounce off the forefoot, amplified by the plate and Air Zoom pods. If you want a propulsive, pitch-forward sensation with a lively toe-off, the Alphafly delivers it.
The PowerRun HG foam in the Endorphin Elite is still very lively and bouncy, but the ride feels more predictable, with a consistent rocker geometry that makes it easy to fall into rhythm and hold pace. That consistency shines at half marathon and marathon paces.
At 5K pace, the Alphafly 3 responds a bit better. The stiff forefoot and energetic ZoomX let you open your stride and eat up ground. The trade-off is that you need to control your legs: the cannon-like propulsion demands self-discipline. The Endorphin Elite, by contrast, likes to settle into rhythm and stay there, which makes it easier to manage over long distances. Both midsoles are protective and retain structure underfoot, neither feels mushy, and both are genuinely fast when you push them.

Outsole and Traction
Both shoes carry a decent amount of exposed midsole foam, so wet conditions are not the strong suit for either. The Alphafly 3 has some rubber on the heel, but much of the midfoot is exposed ZoomX, which can feel slightly slick on the track or road. The wide, stable forefoot has good traction and provides a solid platform to lever off. The Endorphin Elite has a similar construction with a wide base, a little less traction overall, but it sticks to the road well and only becomes noticeably slippery in water in the same situations where almost any racing shoe would.
Cornering is surprisingly good on both. The Endorphin Elite feels a touch more natural underfoot when navigating turns, but on the track, the Alphafly 3’s lockdown and turn resistance make it the preferred pick between the two.
Which One for Which Distance
For the marathon, both are capable, and pure comfort leans narrowly toward the Endorphin Elite. For the half marathon, it genuinely depends on the day, the course, and the kind of ride you want. From 10K down, the Alphafly 3 is the more consistent pick, letting the legs open up and run faster than half marathon pace. If you want a controlled, rhythmic, get-to-work ride, the Endorphin Elite shines there.

Conclusion
The Saucony Endorphin Elite and Nike Alphafly 3 are two of the best racing shoes available right now, and neither is the clear better choice. The Alphafly 3 offers a bouncier, more propulsive toe-off that rewards strong leg control and quicker paces. The Endorphin Elite offers an easier, more predictable rhythm that suits long, controlled racing and slightly wider feet. The experience each shoe delivers is slightly different, and the right answer comes down to your own mechanics and preferences.
