Saucony Endorphin Elite Long Run Review: A Racing Shoe That Goes the Distance
After a 1 hour 48 long run in half marathon training, the Saucony Endorphin Elite held its pace, comfort, and bounce remarkably well. Here is how it performed.
Introduction
A good test for a running shoe is to take it out on a longer run, and the Saucony Endorphin Elite has now had exactly that treatment. After roughly 25 miles of use, including a long run of about 1 hour 48 built into half marathon training, this shoe has kept impressing. It is one of the most fun and exhilarating shoes run in all year, and one of the most comfortable over longer distances too. That combination is rare, and it is what makes the Endorphin Elite worth a close look for anyone racing a half or full marathon.
The Long Run Test
The long run covered around 8 minutes per mile at a sustainable pace, with 689 ft of elevation gain across the distance in reasonably dry conditions on quiet English roads and paths around Somerset. Heart rate averaged 134 beats per minute, almost entirely in an easy endurance zone, and pace held remarkably consistent throughout. Only a slight drop in pace up the hills interrupted an otherwise ideal effort.

The conditions suited the test well: about 8 degrees Centigrade with very little wind. What matters for this review is how the shoe behaved over the miles, because long runs are where less capable shoes start to fall apart.
Upper and Fit
For a shoe positioned as a higher-pace option, the upper caused no problems whatsoever on the long run. Some earlier feedback on this shoe mentioned complaints about the upper and even the length of the shoe, but none of those issues appeared here. The toe box has just the right amount of width and height, and there was no heel slip despite a somewhat unconventional lacing setup.
This is one runner’s personal experience, and that is worth bearing in mind: hot takes from short first runs do not always tell you how a shoe will behave in a marathon as the miles add up and feet swell. Over this longer test there were no uncomfortable areas, no hot spots, and the shoe felt equally good with a thicker sock. Breathability is not exceptional, but feet did not feel too cold or overheated either. As a bonus, the upper drains water really well. There is very little material for water to hang on to, so even aiming for puddles on wet roads left the shoe behaving as it did on day one.
Midsole: Dense, Bouncy, and Built for Pace
The midsole is the intriguing part. The more miles this shoe gets, the more its PowerRun HG foam feels like the Flight Foam Turbo used in the Adios Pro speed series: a rebound-style foam that is a bit more dense and bouncy, not the brittle feel found in some Nike shoes. There is a little more foam underfoot than in those race-day options, and it does not completely disappear beneath you.

Wear on the exposed midsole foam shows slight discoloring, similar to what appears on the Adios Pro speed models, but that is a cosmetic concern at most. What matters is performance, and the forked plate combined with an 8 mm drop from heel to toe really seems to tick the boxes for half and full marathon pace. The PowerRun PB insole, similar to the one in the Endorphin Pro 3, adds to the overall bouncy character.
The most telling detail came late in the long run. Many shoes bottom out after 10 miles or so and lose their pop. Here, the instant the pace turned up while tired, the foam kept propelling. For marathon and half marathon pace, this shoe hits all the buttons. It does make moving up through the gears very easy, which means it requires a little discipline to stay in your intended pace zone on easy long runs. On the flip side, that responsiveness makes it ideal if you like to finish long runs with faster reps or intervals, giving you a versatile shoe that covers a range of paces.
Traction in Wet Conditions
Wet weather was part of the test. Even on slippery layers of wet leaves, traction felt assured, including going downhill where it felt possible to let rip a little. On debris-strewn surfaces the grip held up well too, likely thanks to the textured rubber used on the outsole, which is similar to the compound on the Adios Pro speed models.
The Endorphin Pro 3 was merely okay on smooth wet surfaces, never quite perfect. This is certainly a step in the right direction, and one of the more confident wet-weather rides among plated race shoes. The Speedroll technology creates a substantial rocker from midfoot to forefoot, and it rolls through beautifully with the stride across cadences from around 164 at easy paces up to 182 or 183 at race pace.
Things to Consider Before Buying
The rebound of this shoe might almost be too extreme for some people on descents. On steeper downhills it was almost like bouncing down the hill, which will shift impact and workload to different parts of the legs. Anyone used to plated shoes with very soft rebound foams should go easy on themselves with a first pair and not expect miracles.

The sensible approach is to slowly incorporate the Endorphin Elite into daily training and racing, because it demands something a bit different from you and your legs. As a pure long-run-everything shoe it may simply prove too fast for some runners, and plenty of other shoes do an excellent job at a consistently easy pace. But if you want a shoe that feels fast early on and still bounces when you are tired late in a race, this one has earned serious consideration for your next half or full marathon start line.
Conclusion
The Saucony Endorphin Elite delivered a superb long-run experience: a comfortable, well-fitting upper, a dense and bouncy midsole that never bottomed out, confident wet-weather traction, and a rocker geometry that suits both easy and race cadences. It rewards runners who want one versatile racing shoe for half marathon and marathon pace work, provided you introduce it gradually. Few shoes this year manage to be both this fun and this comfortable over long distances.
