Salomon Ultra Glide 3 Review: A Comfort-First Trail Shoe with a Strange Outsole

A plush, stability-friendly trail shoe built for long, undulating ultra distances, with one of the most unusual outsole patterns we have seen.

Introduction

The Salomon Ultra Glide 3 is a comfort-first trail shoe with a clear mission: keep runners stable and protected over very long, undulating distances. It is not an aggressive mountain racer, and it is not trying to be. Instead, it leans on a generous midsole, a secure classic Salomon upper, and an outsole design that is genuinely unlike anything else on the trail.

After roughly a month of testing in mud, rock, and everything in between, the shoe left a strong impression, even if one design choice remains a puzzle.

A Truly Unusual Outsole

Start from the bottom and the Ultra Glide 3 immediately earns the label unusual. The outsole is covered in a pattern of shallow circular depressions that looks strikingly like the surface of the moon, or the mark a steep golf shot leaves in a green. No other road or trail shoe looks like this.

It is hard to find a clear official explanation for the design philosophy, but the results speak for themselves. The shoe pairs 4 mm lugs, which are not overly aggressive on paper, with this unique base pattern. In real mud and over rock, the traction held up well and slipping was never an issue. Whether that comes down to the lugs, the divot-style pattern, or the combination of both is anyone’s guess.

Midsole and Ride

The midsole is the heart of this shoe, and it is substantial. This is a lot of cushion underfoot, aimed squarely at runners logging big mileage, the kind of effort where you are out on the trail for hours at a time.

The ride feels great and, importantly, stable. Despite the volume of foam, there was never a sensation of standing too high on a platform or a risk of rolling an ankle on uneven ground.

That said, the bulk works against it on technical, steep mountain terrain. This is not the shoe for a high-altitude summit push. It shines on rolling, undulating hills rather than steep mountain routes, and runners who favor shorter, snappier trail runs may find it slightly too much shoe.

Who It Is Best For

Distance is the deciding factor here. For a 15 to 20 mile race, something else may serve you better. But if a 50k is on the calendar, this shoe belongs on the shortlist. At the 25 to 35 mile mark, when hours accumulate and fatigue sets in, the supportive midsole and stable platform really come into their own.

If your typical week involves long summer adventures of five, six, or seven hours on moderate terrain, the Ultra Glide 3 is a genuinely good option to have in the rotation.

Upper Fit and Lockdown

The upper is, frankly, the best part of the shoe. Salomon describes the fit as a hug, and that is accurate in the best way. It is a full gusseted construction in the classic Salomon style, and it feels even more secure than previous Ultra Glide versions.

The lockdown over the top of the foot is noticeably improved, which matters in mud, and the classic Salomon quick-pull lacing system works exactly as expected. The heel counter posed no problems during testing, though runners out for four to six hours might occasionally wish for a touch more plushness at the back of the heel.

Buying Advice

Pick the Ultra Glide 3 if your trail running centers on long, moderate terrain and big-distance events. Look elsewhere if steep, technical mountain running or shorter, faster trail races dominate your calendar. For ultra-distance runners, particularly 50k and beyond, the combination of cushioning, stability, and one of the best uppers in its class makes this an easy recommendation.

Conclusion

The Salomon Ultra Glide 3 is a slightly quirky but highly capable long-distance trail shoe. The moon-crater outsole is genuinely bizarre, yet traction in mud proved dependable. The plush midsole is too much for steep mountain terrain but excels on undulating ultra courses, and the improved upper is a clear highlight. If long trail days are your thing, this shoe deserves a close look.
