Salomon Hologram Snowboard Bindings Review: A Lively All-Mountain Freestyle Revamp

The reworked Salomon Hologram bindings trade raw precision for playful flex, with solid straps and a forgiving Shadowfit heel cup. Here is who they suit and who should look elsewhere.

Introduction

The Salomon Hologram received a full overhaul for the 2024 season, and the changes are aimed at a very specific kind of rider. After putting the bindings through a demanding day on the hill, the short version is this: the revamp adds a bit more rigidity and power underfoot, but the Hologram remains a lively, loose, playful binding rather than a precision tool.

Test Conditions

The test day covered a genuinely mixed menu: choppy powder, high to moderate winds, choppy chunder, perfect corduroy, and a few icy patches. The bindings were mounted on a Ride Shadowban snowboard paired with K2 Thraxis boots, which gives a realistic picture of how they behave on a true all-mountain freestyle setup.

That variety matters, because a binding that feels great on perfect corduroy can fall apart in chunder. The Hologram held up reasonably well across all of it, though firm, jarring hits were clearly its weak point.

Straps and Ratchets

Adjustability starts with two twist cams on the toe and heel straps. Unscrew them, lengthen or shorten the strap, tighten back down, and lock it in. Forward lean and highback rotation are handled through a single set screw at the base, which covers the essentials without much fuss.

The heel strap uses a two-piece design that is a little thicker than most. An exoskeleton on the outside adds rigidity through the middle of the instep, while the strap itself contours well around the boot. It is firm without being restrictive: not so soft that you push through it, not so stiff that it stops you from driving.

The toe strap features an immensely large cutout with a double ridge on top for grip. It fits just about any boot shape and locks in securely. Both straps held well with no premature releases.

On the ratchet side, the heel gets a one-finger quick release that works exceptionally well. It climbs smoothly, stays locked, and is easy to use. The toe ratchet uses a push-down quick release instead, which works but feels inconsistent when the other side has the superior one-finger mechanism. That said, both ratchets climbed, locked, and released as needed throughout testing.

Highback and Fit

The highback is soft and very playful. Combined with the Shadowfit heel cup, there is a lot of give, especially on the outside edge when you are really driving and tweaking. Press straight back into it and it feels a bit more rigid, but overall this is a flexible, forgiving highback. Forward lean is set via the side screws rather than a dedicated adjustment.

Flex and Ride Feel

Overall flex lands around the middle of the road, with a little extra play coming from the Shadowfit heel cup and the straps. This is a lively binding with genuine lateral and fore-aft play, letting your ankles rotate and keeping things loose and slashy.

Small micro vibrations get dissipated underfoot nicely, but the bigger, more jarring hits come straight through. If your body is getting rocked by rough terrain, expect to take it in the lower back. The 2024 revamp did make the binding more rigid underfoot and adds a bit more power, and that change genuinely works.

If you want precision, this is not the binding for you. If you want response for aggressive park jibbing or deep powder riding with lots of ankle flexion, it does not offer enough either. But as a playful middle-ground binding, the revamp delivers.

Who This Binding Is For

The Hologram suits the all-mountain freestyle rider who wants a looser, more forgiving feel and plenty of play through the ankles. It is not a bad binding, and it is not a mind-blowing one either. It is a well-executed, lively option for riders who prioritize fun and flexibility over razor-sharp response.

If that loose, playful character is what you are after, comparable bindings worth cross-shopping include the Union Strata, the Bataleon Blaster Asym, and the K2 Edition.

Buying Advice

Before buying, be honest about your riding style. If you spend most of your time smashing steeps, carving hard, or riding big lines, the soft highback and lateral play will likely feel too loose. If your days revolve around playful turns, tweaks, and creative freestyle riding across the whole mountain, the Hologram is an easy recommendation, especially now that the reworked chassis adds a touch more power underfoot.

Conclusion

The overhauled Salomon Hologram does exactly what it set out to do: it takes a playful, forgiving binding and makes it a little more rigid and capable underfoot without killing its character. Riders who want precision should keep looking, but all-mountain freestyle riders who value a loose, lively feel will find a lot to like here.
