Salomon Highlander Binding Review: Stiff Response With Just Enough Tweak
A closer look at the Salomon Highlander snowboard binding, a stiffer freeride-oriented option built for advanced riders who want response without losing tweakability.
Introduction
The Salomon Highlander is the brand’s stiffer, more aggressive binding, and it makes a strong first impression. After a full day of riding on it, this is a binding that could easily work as a daily driver for advanced riders who want response first, with just enough play to keep things comfortable.
Riding Conditions and Test Setup
The test day was anything but forgiving. The sky and the ground blended together in genuinely dark flat light, with a few inches of fresh snow falling overnight and roughly five to six inches of snow by the end of the day, sitting over ice underneath. Deeper spots rode well, but if you missed them you were sliding around on hardpack, which is a solid stress test for how a binding handles mixed conditions.

The setup paired the Highlander with a Jones Aviator board and Ride Fuse boots, a combination that leans toward a stiffer, more performance-oriented ride.
Straps, Buckles, and Release
Adjustability is straightforward. The straps use a twist system you can operate by hand, and if you overtighten one, a flathead screwdriver pushed into the mechanism makes it come right out. The key tip: tighten the strap adjusters as far as they will go, otherwise they start sliding.

The toe strap stretches quite a bit, but on a square toe box it gripped without slipping, even after flat landings. The ankle straps are extremely large: they lock you in without pressure points, even when going for that final extra click on the buckles. Because they are not molded straps, you feel the strap pressing on the boot rather than the plush feel of a softer basic strap, but comfort was not a problem.
The ratchets tighten down cleanly, grip the ladders well, and showed no stripping after a full day. Getting out is easy on the toe strap since there is no release lever, just smack it and it pops open. The ankle ratchet’s small release lever is the weak spot: with mittens on, it was tough to grip, and the practical workaround was grabbing the back of the teeth and pulling straight up.
Highback and Flex
There is no dedicated highback adjuster dial, but forward lean is still adjustable: unscrew the screws on both sides of the highback, pull it back for more forward lean, or push it forward for less.
The highback sits on the stiffer end and has a little torsional play, much of it coming from the Shadow Fit system. On heel side, you feel the highback keeping you on edge; on toe side, it disappears, which leaves room for tweaking grabs. When you tweak a method hard, you feel resistance pulling the highback back toward its natural position under your foot, which makes overstretched landings feel safer.

Overall, the binding did not flex as much as expected given the Shadow Fit construction. The heel cup is on the stiffer side, so the binding flexes well with the board but allows limited lateral play. The ride feels fairly damp: icy patches are noticeable underfoot, but not enough to cause foot fatigue.
Who the Highlander Is For
This is a binding for advanced riders. Whether the plan is technical freeride terrain, big park lines, or the halfpipe, the Highlander holds you exactly where you want to be without unwanted play, while still offering a bit of tweakability.

If you want maximum response with a touch of flex for style, this binding sits in a sweet spot. Comparable options worth cross-shopping include the Union Atlas, the K2 Edition, and the Jones Mercury.
Conclusion
The Salomon Highlander delivers the aggressive response its positioning promises, with better comfort and tweakability than expected from a Shadow Fit stiffer binding. For advanced riders pushing limits in freeride terrain or the park, it is an easy recommendation and a realistic daily driver.
