Salomon Glide Max Review: A Plush First Step Into Max Cushion

Salomon's first true max-cushion road trainer trades its usual firm, technical feel for soft daily miles, with a few quirks to know before buying.

Introduction

Salomon is not the brand most road runners associate with soft, easygoing daily trainers. Its road and trail lineup has historically leaned firm and technical. The Glide Max changes that: it is the company’s first true max-cushion road shoe, and it clearly aims at the market that has been drawn to plush trainers from brands like Hoka.

After roughly 35 miles of testing, the verdict is largely positive. This is a genuinely pretty, well-built shoe with a soft initial feel, and it is a strong option in the daily trainer category, with a couple of caveats worth understanding first.

Who This Shoe Is For

The Glide Max suits runners who want a comfortable, cushioned shoe for everyday miles rather than a firm, fast racing feel. It fits true to size, and despite the tall stack it reads as a normal, unpretentious running shoe.

The upper also earns points for accommodating wide feet. The one-piece engineered mesh upper with welded laces expands through the throat, so the shoe can open up noticeably. That flexibility should make it workable for wide-footed runners who sometimes struggle with stiff saddle bands cutting into the top of the foot.

Main Strengths

The first thing most people will notice is the look. The Glide Max is a genuinely attractive shoe, with contrasting tape details on the upper and a clean overall silhouette that works both for running and as a casual sneaker.

Underfoot, the story is the midsole. Salomon uses an olefin-based foam in an R Camber shape, and the initial step-in feel is plush. For a brand known for firm, technical shoes, this softness is unexpected in a good way. The stack is 37.4mm in the heel and 27.4mm in the forefoot, which puts real cushion under the foot at both ends. The padded tongue works well with the shoe, sitting exactly where it should, and pairs nicely with the thin welded laces.

The outsole should also hold up well. The Contra Grip outsole gets a generous layer of rubber, and wear after the test period was limited to a fraction of a millimeter on the outer edge nubs, which suggests solid long-term durability. The weight lands at 10.7 ounces (302 grams) for a men’s size 10.5, which is reasonable for a daily trainer with this much cushion.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The quirks are real, and most of them sit in the fit and geometry. The upper runs a little warm, even in 50-degree weather, so summer running may feel stuffy. The tongue is not gusseted, which some runners will notice on debris or wet roads.

The laces themselves are very thin, thin enough that tying the shoe can almost hurt your fingers. It is a small thing, but it is the main complaint on the upper.

Geometry is the other consideration. The R Camber shape sounds like a rocker, but the ride leans forward: the heel feels very cushioned while the forefoot is noticeably firmer under the toes. The drop is genuinely felt in this shoe, even for testers who usually never notice drop. After about 10 miles, some compression started showing in the front of the midsole, so durability of that plush forefoot feel is worth watching over more miles. There are also small “skin tag” elements where the rubber meets the upper, which Salomon says help hold the shoe together if the midsole flares out; they are unusual to see, though harmless in practice.

Buying Advice

The closest comparisons are the Nimbus 24 and the Rincon 3. Like the Nimbus 24, the Glide Max delivers soft cushioning but leaves a bit of meat missing under the ball of the foot. Like the Rincon 3, the cushioning is there, but how long it stays is the open question.

If the brand could add a few more millimeters under the forefoot to soften the drop, this would be an easy recommendation for almost anyone. As it stands, buy it if you want a plush, good-looking daily trainer and you land midfoot or heel-first comfortably; think twice if you dislike an aggressive heel-to-toe lean or need a very breathable summer shoe.

Conclusion

The Salomon Glide Max is an impressive first swing at the max-cushion road category: plush, well-constructed, attractive, and durable-feeling underfoot. It will not replace firm fast-day shoes, but as a comfortable daily trainer it earns its place, priced at $150 and expected to release around July or August.
