Introduction

One of the best things about the fountain pen hobby is its range. On one end you have polished pens from large manufacturers, and on the other you have individual artisans creating one-of-a-kind pieces. The Rob’s Pen Works Manzanita Burl Color Shift sits firmly in the second category, and it is a genuinely special pen.

Rob’s Pen Works is the work of Robert Sanchez, an artisan based in Carlsbad, California, in North County San Diego. Rob works in the biomedical field and holds a PhD relating to robotic exoskeletons, and he came to pen making by way of a hands-on hobby. Encouraged by a friend, he started with kit pens and quickly graduated to full bespoke pens, specializing in unique custom resins often loaded with glitter and flair.

A Bespoke Pen With a Story Behind It

What makes this pen remarkable is that you are part of the process. Throughout the build, Rob shares progress photos. The raw manzanita wood is broken into pieces with one straight end and one jagged end, then infused with resin and stabilized so it will never crack or warp. The wood is placed into molds with his custom resin, producing blanks that are later turned into the finished pen.

The finished result is striking. Manzanita wood runs through the middle of the pen, infused with a pearlescent, sparkly resin that also appears on the ends. The sparkle is present but restrained, never overdone. Rotate the pen in the light and you get a genuine color shift, with plenty of pearlescence on show. The transition between the darker manzanita and the lighter resin is smooth, with no ridge or drastic step where the materials meet, and a small natural curl in the wood adds a unique character touch.

Design and Build Quality

The pen is not precisely straight: it is very slightly wider at the ends and tapers down, with the barrel tapering just a bit more. The cap twists off with just over two rotations. The section is made from the same sparkly resin, with a small flare at the end angling up slightly to the threads, followed by a dual step-up to the barrel.

In the hand, the pen is comfortable and well balanced. Although the wood weighs slightly more than resin, it does not back-weight the pen or throw off the balance noticeably. The pen is not designed to post, which is worth knowing if you prefer writing posted.

The Nib and Writing Experience

Under the cap sits a stainless steel number six nib with an octopus logo engraving that looks sharp, and the nib was tuned by Kurt Spear, who did a fantastic job. The medium stainless steel nib is a bo nib and is on the wetter side, which many writers will appreciate.

You will not get a ton of line variation from a stainless steel medium, but this one is surprisingly generous for a medium nib. Reverse writing lays down an extra fine line, though the nib is a bit sharp in that direction. At faster writing speeds, the feed keeps up just fine. In testing with Colorverse Andromeda, a lighter maroon ink with golden sheen, along with Pilot Iroshizuku and Calamo inks, the pen performed very nicely.

Filling System and Everyday Use

This is a cartridge converter pen that accepts standard international cartridges, and a converter is provided. Even though the wood is stabilized, this pen would technically be a candidate for an eyedropper conversion, but most cautious users would shy away from putting bare ink in contact with the wood, stabilized or not. Stick with cartridges and the included converter and you are set.

Sizing and Comparisons

Compared with other independent makers, the Manzanita Burl Color Shift holds its own. It sits alongside resins from makers like Maverick Pens and Carolina Pen Company, and similar to the work from Shubi North, Mythic Pen Company, and Rockster, it brings a look that simply does not exist anywhere else in a collection.

If you value pens that look like nothing else you own, that is exactly what Rob delivers. His full catalog, visible on his Instagram, is full of pieces that look nothing like standard offerings.

Things to Consider Before Buying

Custom pens from Rob range from under $200 to around $400 or more depending on the options you choose. As with many custom pen makers, the wait can be lengthy: Rob is currently booked through the end of 2026 for new commissions.

That said, he will be attending the San Francisco pen show and plans to begin doing drops with limited custom commissions. The best ways to reach him are Instagram or email.

Buying Advice

If you want a mass-produced workhorse pen delivered tomorrow, this is not it. But if you want a custom-made piece built just for you, with a fun collaborative process along the way and a finished pen that performs very well, the wait is worthwhile. Getting on his list, or catching him at a pen show or one of his drops, is the way to go.

Conclusion

The Manzanita Burl Color Shift is a stunning pen with beautiful contrast between dark wood and lighter sparkle, tasteful pearlescence, a genuine color shift, and a well-tuned nib that writes beautifully. It is a unique artisan piece that earns its place in any collection, even if its maker is, regrettably, a Dodger fan.
