Introduction

The Radius x Figboot on Pens Blue Flame is a limited edition fountain pen from the Italian brand Radius, limited to just 300 units. Radius was founded in 1934 in Turin, Italy, and produced pens for roughly two decades until the mid-1950s. The brand was recently revived by Leonardo, which began producing pens under the Radius name in 2019, basing releases on historical designs.

This collaboration is priced at $199, with sales handled directly through the collaborator’s own website. It is a cartridge/converter pen with an unusually wide range of nib choices, including elastic options, and it ships roughly 45 days after the sale closes so buyers can choose their preferred nib.

Material and Finish

The Blue Flame is made from a translucent Italian resin, the same material used in a version of the Leonardo Pura. The exterior has a frosted, velvet finish that is opaque enough to show shadows of what is happening beneath the surface, adding a bit of mystery to the look. The deep blue tone resembles the flame of burning propane or natural gas, which is how the pen earned its name after a community vote.

The velvet texture is not just cosmetic. It helps you maintain a solid grip on the pen, which makes it comfortable for longer writing sessions.

Design and Hardware

The cap comes to a slightly rounded point and carries a PVD-treated clip with a rainbow gradient. Because of the treatment process, every pen has a slightly different and unique look. The back of the cap is engraved with Radius and Figboot, and a unique band at the end of the cap lets the resin show through the gaps. The barrel runs straight for about an inch and a half before tapering down to a rounded conical point.

The cap twists off with a single rotation. Hidden details continue inside: the end of the section housing also carries the rainbow treatment, a small touch that rewards a closer look.

Comfort and Everyday Use

The section begins with a small flare and angles up slightly to the threads and rainbow band, with essentially no step between the barrel and the section. That makes the section accommodating to a variety of grip styles, and the threads are not sharp even if your grip crosses over them.

The cap posts securely, and because the tapered cap edge is not sharp, it stays comfortable even if it rubs against your hand. As a cartridge/converter pen, it accepts standard international cartridges and arrives with a threaded converter.

Nib Options

The nib is one of the real highlights of this pen. It is a stainless steel unit made by JoWo, coated with the same rainbow PVD treatment, engraved with Radius and Superior, and the underside of the nib carries the treatment as well.

Available nib choices are wide: extra fine, fine, medium, broad, a 1.1 stub, plus an elastic fine and an elastic extra fine. That range is uncommon at this price point and makes it easier to match the pen to your writing style.

Writing Experience

The fine nib sample was pleasant to use. It is not scratchy, has a decent amount of feedback, and maintains good ink flow. Reverse writing lays down a very extra fine line, and during fast writing the feed kept up well. For a writer who typically prefers medium and broad nibs, the fine was still enjoyable enough to use regularly.

The 1.1 stub adds flare to writing without much effort. There is little flex, but downstrokes are significantly wider than cross strokes. Ink flow is decent, reverse writing is scratchy as expected from a stub, and fast writing is smooth with the feed keeping up well.

Buying Advice

The Blue Flame sells for $199 exclusively through figboot.com, starting Saturday, February 10th at 9:00 a.m. Eastern. It is a limited edition of 300 units, with no special requests for specific pen numbers.

Shipping is $15 within the US and $35 internationally. EU customers receive their pens directly from the manufacturer in Italy to avoid additional tax. Pens ship approximately 45 days after the sale, structured like a short pre-order so everyone can order the nib of their choosing. Past projects have shipped on or before the promised date.

Conclusion

The Radius x Figboot on Pens Blue Flame combines a striking velvet blue resin, distinctive rainbow PVD hardware, and an unusually generous nib selection at $199. With only 300 units available, it suits collectors and everyday writers alike who want a comfortable, well-made Italian pen with genuine personality.
