Puma Velocity Nitro 2 Review: A Cushioned Daily Trainer That Feels Better Than Its Price

An improved upper, softer Nitro foam, and outstanding grip make the Puma Velocity Nitro 2 one of the most versatile daily trainers at its price.

Introduction

After a strong debut, the Puma Velocity Nitro 2 had the classic pressure of a second version to live up to. The good news: it avoids the sophomore slump entirely. This is not just a refresh, it is a genuine improvement, with a better upper, a softer-feeling midsole, and the same excellent grip that made the original a favorite. At $120, it is one of the strongest values in the daily trainer category right now.

First Impressions: A Clear Step Up

The first thing you notice just picking the shoe up is the quality. The original’s upper felt a bit plasticky and cheap to the touch, which was one of the most common complaints about it. The Velocity Nitro 2 fixes that with a new upper that feels soft, tactile, and noticeably more premium.

Comfort is excellent from the moment you step in. The padded sockliner and a gusseted, articulated tongue create a sleeve-like fit that wraps the foot evenly, and the heel counter holds securely with no issues with heel lift. The one fit quirk worth knowing: the shoe runs a little long. Even wearing a half size down, there is still a touch of extra room in the toe box, so trying a half size down from your usual size is a sensible move.

The Ride: Nitro Foam That Feels Luxurious

The nitrogen-infused Nitro foam returns from the first version, but it feels softer this year, with a smooth, creamy exterior instead of the styrofoam-like look of the original. Puma has also increased the amount of EVA foam in the bottom half of the midsole, which both stabilizes the Nitro foam and gives the ride a more grounded, secure feel.

The result is a shoe that feels more cushioned than its stack height suggests. With the sockliner, stack height measures 33.5mm in the heel and 23.5mm in the forefoot, giving a 10mm drop. It is not a bouncy race-day shoe, and that is not the point. As a daily trainer, it delivers a protective, comfortable ride that works for slow runs and faster efforts alike. Compared to shoes at the same price like the Pegasus or Nimbus 24, it holds its own, with the Nimbus 24 feeling slightly softer and bouncier but the Puma offering a very well-rounded feel for racking up miles.

Grip and Outsole: Ready for Gravel

Puma Grip remains one of the best outsole compounds in running, and it is a genuine highlight here. The gum rubber outsole looks great and lets you take corners with confidence.

The tread pattern draws obvious comparisons to the Pegasus, with a slightly more aggressive knobbing toward the toe. Puma says this was intentional, making the shoe suitable for buffed-out trails and gravel roads. If you want one shoe that genuinely does everything from road to light trail, this outsole makes a strong case.

Durability, Weight, and Fit Details

After around 20 miles, wear is minimal: a little light scuffing on the heel rubber, with the front end showing no abrasion at all. Expect a good 300 to 400 miles from a pair. Weight sits right where a cushioned daily trainer should: a women’s 8.5 (men’s 7) weighs 8.5 ounces (240g), while a men’s 10.5 comes in at 10.2 ounces (288g).

Foot protection was excellent throughout testing, and picking up the pace never felt like a struggle. For $120, it is hard to think of a better deal in this category.

Buying Advice

The Velocity Nitro 2 is available now for $120, and Puma shoes have a history of selling out quickly, so if you find your size it is worth grabbing. Beyond the standard colorways, a First Mile edition with a clean oatmeal colorway and gum outsole arrives April 1st, made in partnership with the First Mile impact organization, which supports jobs collecting waste in lower-income communities around the world and converts it into materials used in the upper. A plum colorway is also available. For sizing, start with a half size down.

Conclusion

The Puma Velocity Nitro 2 takes what made the original the most versatile shoe in Puma’s lineup and improves on it in every area that mattered: a better upper, a softer and more stable ride, and the same class-leading grip. If you want a cushioned, do-everything daily trainer at a fair price, this is an easy recommendation.
